i didn't undestod quite well your english, but if you're trying to key the visibility on/off of an object, you just can't. just key the scale from 0 in one frame to 1 in the next frame. good luck

No problem mate

risky business ! dont do that if you have motion blur!

Also, keyframing the visibility works fine!

I never tought about that with motion blur.... but are you saying that you batch an animation with MR and keyframed visibility and have no problem? mine doesn't work!!

i might have to correct myself, it only works if you do not animate the visibility. In both cases (using the scale or the visibility) you will run into issues with motion blur as it will look for the object inbetween frames and as the visibility is either true or false it wont know how to solve it.
there actually seems to be no smart way of letting an object disappear unless you render in layers and do it in the comp afterwards ...

itīs as i tought when trying to keyframe the visibility, in the other hand i didn't knew the problem with the motion blur, thanks a lot for the warning. it will prevent iget stuck in the future..

So, i guess U were batch rendering with MR, huh?

in the transform node of every object there is a mental ray tab, open it and tick off using setting from Maya, and animate those attribute especially made for MR, move it to channel box with channel control. It's more like animating "primary visibility", so keyframe trace and shadow attributes as well. In the MR global paly around with "optimize non animated display visibility" option in the performance tab, I can't remember if it's suppose to be on or off...

Do a search, there is at least 3 threads about it.

yeah I had the same exact problem...keying visibility didn't work (atleast with mental ray, don't know about Maya Software). So I rendered my animation by keying the scale...just as you said :p

I'd love the visibility keying to work, so if anyone knows how to solve it, go ahead and solve the mystery :D

EDIT: oh, ok...didn't see the last post, sorry!! (I'm rather new to the CG-talk forums; I didn't see all posts on one page, weird)

yesssssssssss!!! it works!!!
the only attribute that seems not to work with keyframe is Hide...

thanks!!!

Now.... a new problem came out.
Is impossibile to keyframe visibility and Mi Visibile togheter...

But the problem is that i'm making some balls that fall down to a plane, collide, emit some particles then disappear... so i have to render the balls before and then, with hardware buffer, render the particles...

I'm gona crazy!!

I try with the scale mode!

i have hundreds of objects that needed animated visibility, and they are all complex objects inside groups.

would the scale method be appropriate ? or if its technically still being evaluated in the render then you could have render times get dramatically longer or does the engine not evaluate something if its scale is 0,0,0 ?

hmmm ive found that just adding the miVisibility node to the channel box and editing that works ok, you cant visually see that it is being visible or not in the viewport.. but the batch render works, so thats cool.

also make sure you uncheck the derrive from maya checkbox under mentalray/flags in the attribute editor before you batch, or it will override your channel box edits

and i didnt even have to play around with the translate/preformance/ optimize non-animated display visibility setting.. i left it checked on (default)
