View Full Version : Photoshop or Painter : Yet another buying guide
Sular 08-24-2006, 11:40 PM Hello,
Photoshop or Painter, that is the question.
Painter almost only cost as little as 1/3 to 1/4 of what Photoshop will cost ya. That is a very very notable pro for Painter (unless you just cant be bothered with pricetags :D).
So the question is, how do you rate the programs ? Could you do any job in Photoshop, equally well in Painter ? If yes, then awesome! Otherwise, what would you consider the weaknesses of Painter ?
All responses are appreciated.
NB! I started a parallel thread (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=397235) on the Adobe Photoshop forum :)

Which program do you like better? They are both equally powerful to use in creating art. I like Painter's focus on the artist. The Color Wheel, non destructive Rotate Canvas, Lots of preset brushes. Photoshop has a really powerful brush engine too. Download the trials and give them a workout.
I'm not sure how someone professional or hobbyist could not have both. seems everyone needs PS for something, but it seems the artist in us wants painter. They really are diffrent programs and handle quite diffrently. I do think Painter has led to alot of art supply stores closing ;-)

Painter is one of the best programs for creating art there is. Photoshop is one of the best for modifying an existing image. That said, however, the programs can be used interchangeably. I have the current versions of both. If you had to, (Or if I had to) you can use the current version of Painter, and get by with an older version of Photoshop. The licenses are around for reasonable prices. Version 7 or later will do.

You could do what I did and get Full Version of Painter IX.5 along with Paintshop Pro X, which is also developed by Corel. Paintshop Pro X is almost equally as powerful as Photoshop CS 2.:)

Great replies, thank you.
I think I´ll try the test versions first, but in all likelyhood I will try and go with tomt´s suggestion. Thus I´ll get a brand new edition of Painter and see if I can find an older Photoshop license (I´ve noted not to go older than 7).
