Title: Mark Antony
Name: Pendulum studios
Country: USA
Software: After Effects, Deep Paint, Maya, mental ray, Photoshop, ZBrush
This is a still which was taken from a project we have been working on for the past couple of months. Antony is about to take his own life, after Cleopatra has betrayed him
All the elements were rendered out with Mental ray in Maya, there is a combination of normal maps and displacement maps being used on Antony; his outfit and the background elements.

Really good work. Textures and shaders are great, specially the skin. Detail is awesome too.
My only crit would go into lighting, it makes the charcter not to merge well with the scene. It seems a bit "out of place". I think itīs becouse the character is reciving a strong white light that doesnīt reflects on the background.
Anyway great work! *4s*

Very wonderful work. But if I may ask, did two different people create the textures for the legs and upper torso? Even taking into account the shadowing from the skirt, the skin appears darker, tanned, on the legs as where the upper torso appears more pinkish. The ears are quite luminous also. Other than that one humble observation ... it's stellar. :)
Certainly mastered technic, but above all, I appreciate work on proportion, the guy looks not so tall, very massive (big hands, big head etc...) Found it very great. Congrats and thanks for sharing.

Hi. Nice everything, but his knees look overly muscular, I think. Theres just something that looks a bit off there.
the area around the feet and a little up donīt seam to match well with the background, but the textures are great, good job here.

Nice model, but the lighting feels very 'next gen computer game' rather as movie-esque. Bit flat and transluminent. Lighting around his feet gets dull as well.

Hmm, very good work. Great detail on the textures and I like the lighting. However, in the context of suicide, I think the pose a bit weak. It doesnīt really imply what he wants to do, so this point I donīt like. Otherwise, very good work! :)

The Character is great.
The composition also.
But I think that either the perpective is not the best or the legs have to be a bit longer.
The short legs make the character look very funny the longer you look on this image.

His head is HUGE and his legs looks weak for a Centurion. Those guys walked to battles and then still had to fight.

Great overall image! I love the detail that is put onto the character. Very nice shaders and models. Just some observations though:
I kind of wish that same care of detail was put onto the background. It's for the most part a simplistic background. Maybe adding more cracks/color variety in the stone and adding more ruins in the background (or complete buildings). Nothing to make the BG more busy but to add depth to the scene. Maybe more detail on the ground to break up the "flatness" (smaller pebbles/varied displacement). The shader on the "grills" where the fire feels flat.
The perspective of the image feels off. The composition of the characters feels nice but I get a feeling of the image being "squashed" in the Z. The lighting may be helping to give that feeling however. About the lighting, the character lighting looks great IMO. It's the background lighting that hurts it overall. You have strong lights on the character but none of the harsh light affects the set. Maybe making a stronger key and adjusting the position a bit so it doesn't seem so frontal (I know alot of the frontal light is from the fire but maybe an extra light to shift it toward the left).
But again overall a great image. Just my opinions on pushing it further. :)
**Looking back on it, it reminds me of some of the screenshots from "Gears of War" . Gives an Unreal vibe to it. Not a bad thing. :)

Very nice work! The armour is great. It looks a bit like its hovering above the shoulders, but that should be easy to fix. Antony looks very small. If you scale down the head a little he should look bigger (on the other hand, most of historys great men were small, especially the romans;-) The litning looks a bit flat. The fires dosnīt seem to illuminate the scen, they would also come to live a bit with a little glow effects. Otherwise very good work! Five stars from me!

Wow, such a huge response...
Thanks for all the kind words and the helpful remarks made about this piece!
Well, there are a lot of suggestions, all very valid, and some of which we may decide to implement in the final animation comp.
I guess the story is something we would like to get across. I left out the fact that we are actually creating an extract from Shakespeare's Antony & Cleopatra, where General Antony believes that Cleopatra and her army have double-crossed him. Tormented, Antony delivers a passionate soliloquy, and we wanted to convey this range of emotions in the final animation.
Thanks again for all the comments, if there is time we might update this thread with a new single frame comp.

I'd have to agree with the comments about the background; it just doesn't fit too well with the picture at all. There's no lighting ques to indicate such hot specular blooms on the back of his neck and right forearm (screen left), and they don't match tempeture wise with the main light sources in the scene. The lighting would indicate the character is set at sunset and strongly side lit and back lit which doesn't make sense. The background has lighting ques from all over the place and the sky indicates the sun gone down over the horizon toward the back in Z.
The other issues I have with this piece are that the characters proportions and scale are pretty whacky. Hands are too big, chest too small, shoulders too short, knees to low, calves too stubby. It just makes for a very awkward pose and if one were to see a real human being in this shape, it wouldn't be as a great Roman military general, it would probably be someone who just got ran over by a large vehicle, namely a city bus, 18-wheeler, or a large dump truck.
I think there's certainly potential in the image but I think more attention to the very basics need to be heeded.

Very nice work!
I really like the detail on the armor.
Agreed with the proportion, the head seems to be a little big for his body. His sandals are pretty thin too.

I agree about the lack of attention to basics is killing an amazing amount of potentially great details.
Biggest painful thing to look at is the lighting though. IMHO
Good luck this could be a great piece
I think a front view of the model might be in order.
Sometimes camera lenses can make ojects seem a little distorted, but all points have definitely been noted.

Hey Bryn!
Yeah dude, front view looks better on the proportion
His hips might be a tiny bit too narrow. Awesome modeling job!

really cool model! I love the texture work on him. looks really awesome!
I do thought the head was a little big at first, but seeing the last image, it looks good!
solid work!
btw, i think the leg could be a little thicker.

The proportions still seem off even with the new model shown. He's only about 5 1/2 heads tall. Not very fitting for a solider or some one of power or importance.
