No link here, just a proven suggestion. When looking for car reference, if you dont see it on the great catchall blueprint sites and an internet search turns up squat, go where the gearheads are. Every car has an enthusiasts community, often with forums. Ask nicely for scans from an assembly manual (or track one down in the real world ;)

One Mile Up has great line drawings of every aircraft available.
They cost money, but they are cheap. About $10.00 per file. They come in EPS format.
I think they have other subjects too.
It's definitely worth checking out. I just built a Cessna 335(rare plane) and the drawings worked a heck of a lot better than photos.

Cryothic asked...anyone have any boat-blueprint sites?
I just ran across this site in my searching. It still doesn't really fulfill my searches for classic wooden fishing vessels, but there be plans here! :)
boatdesign.net/Directory/Boat_Plans (http://boatdesign.net/Directory/Boat_Plans/)
Checkout the free models of course, but also make sure and thumb through the links to the commercial designers. Many of them have small images of their plans which would be great for modelling reference.
Also if you go to the base url boatdesign.net (http://www.boatdesign.net/) you can find some plans and reference images in the gallery.

I find that when it comes to older cars, the best thing to do is pick up a decent model kit. I found one for a 68 firebird, scanned the instructions and used it as a base. This a pretty cheap way of doing it (10 -20 bucks) and you can build the model too

11-05-2003, 03:39 AM
I don't know of any blueprints and there may not be any since it is a fairly new model. If you haven't already, go to the hummer site (http://www.hummer.com/hummerjsp/h2/gallery/index.jsp). There is a 360° quicktime viewer of the differ models. You may be able to do something with that. Also, a couple of people have built H2's at the threedy forum as well. Maybe they could help you.
Try to get a brochure at the hummer site, it may have some drawings.
Good Luck.

How hard can the top of a H2 be to model? It's pretty boxy. Go to threedy.com
Look in the Image Gallery - 'Work In Progress - Inorganic models/scenes' > rock crawlin beast!!!
Check out the model by kingcobra. He works without blueprints and it works out o.k. If you ask, he may render a top view for you, he's done it in the past for engines and stuff.

Hey!
For space- related blueprints go here:
http://www.astronautix.com.htm
Here is an example - page for the SaturnV- launch- vehicle- family and all the vehicles that are derived from it (but never made it).
http://www.astronautix.com/lvfam/saturnv.htm
There are a lot of cool space- related - blueprints and concept- drawings on this page as well as reference- photos of those that happened to reach prototype- stadium.
Only drawback is that many of the entries only constist of technical data and no images (can be usefull too sometimes). So you will have to wade through a lot of entries to find what you are looking for.

Hey Velvet!
Witch animal do you like to use now for your modeling? :bounce:
VelvetDragon
07-10-2004, 05:07 AM
Well, it's not really for an existing animal.
I'm planning to make a kind of furry "four-wingged" dragon with arms and i'd like to give it digitigrade legs like a lion or maybe plantigrade as a panther, not sure about it right now.
It's some kind of "chimere"(don't know the english word for it).
So it would be helpful for me to have as many pics as possible so I can use them as reference. Since I want to make it a believable beast, I think I'll have to study some animals anatomy.
Hope it was clear enough :)

I bet that any artist in here who is into cars thought he should model a Nissan Skyline R34.
This is my project right now. I got some R34 blueprints but at low-res and since i modeled just 2 cars i need some good blueprints to start. So if anyone knows any high res blueprints for Nissan Skyline R34, could you please post it here or send it through email or give me a link. Thanx

There is a great site here:
http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/collections/habs_haer/index.html
It contains hundreds of historic buildings which have been described and photographed for public record. All american buildings but everything from cabins to houses to hotels to windmills.
Many of them have blueprints too, and a very detailed. You have to do a bit of rooting around to find the really good ones. Some have 8 different blueprint views, a couple of dozen photos and other information.
(from the link above you can see the "highlights" of the records. If you click Browse Collection by subject, you find a massive list!) Unfortunately there isnt an easy way to tell from each link how many photos and blueprints they have for that building.
As an example I made a windmill, using blueprints from there:

www.indexstock.com (http://www.indexstock.com)
free high res stock photography-you have to register but it is worth it.
i use this site almost everyday. there are pictures of pretty much anything here, and when you register they show huge thumbnails of every picture in their library. they say indexstockphotography across the image, but for reference that is perfect. there aren't alot of straight on shots for model sheets, but if you want to see how something looks to get a feel for it, these are great. plus, the search engine is really good. you can even cross reference keywords and all that jazz. i really do love this site.

no links for orthographic animal reference? gah...my teacher did a demo on this great frog reference in class and then told us we couldn't use it :p
Considering how many of us look for things like this I'm rather surprised there isn't a thing out there, just cars, cars, and cars. If anyone knows of a decent animal reference site, poke me please! animalreference.com or whatever sounded perfect but it's essentially just a dumping ground for people to put up pictures of their pets :/

go to a public or university library and look up zoology or natural biology books I'm sure you'll be able to find tons of orthos and closeups of body parts and the underlying muscle and bone structure of any number of animals including frogs

These aren't exactly orthographic views, but for Military equipment / uniforms reference, www.militarymorons.com (http://www.militarymorons.com) is a good site.

If you poke around the Master Grade (MG 1/100) section of this store you can find partially scanned manuals, most including the blueprint style lineart. Unfortunately the prints are relatively small so it might not be very useful....

I've looked through every post through this amazing thread but I didn't find what I was looking for. I want to model a creature type head (sorta like Alex Alvarez does in his Zbrush video). Problem is I suck at drawing so I can't make my own images. I just want some good front and side views of fantasy/creature heads to model in Maya then bring in Zbrush to add insane detail :D. Does anyone have a site like this? Or if anyone would be willing to give me some images they have drawn, that would be great! This isn't anything commercial, it's just for myself and to add to my portfolio.

Hey Everybody-
you guys should check out reference 3D. It is an awesome reference site for 3D artists. It is a relatively new site that caters to 3D artists needs. The images are really high quality and can be used just for proportions or for alphas in Zbrush. The guys that are starting this whole thing are really professional and have a world of knowledge regarding what the needs of 3D artists are. You just get a basic membership to browse through and download images in their galleries, you can get exclusive rights to images, or you can give them a call and request something that might be project specific. In my opinion their stuff is a must have for any project out there, whether it be personal or commercial. So check out their web site and find out for yourself what the evolution of reference material is like!!!

The Reference3D site is a bit of a mystery ,I cant download any of the pdf files in short it would seem that interested parties have to contact them directly.Usually when information is that well hidden you just know that prices are likely to be extremly high.
