View Full Version : Animation: Learning to Fly
chris_reed97 01-25-2003, 09:37 PM This is my first demo reel. I just completed it in mid December of '02. This was my final project for my certificate in Character Animation from The Art Institute of Dallas. It's in Sorenson 3 QT. Crits are welcome. Enjoy.

Soe very nice animation:thumbsup:
I like that "cartoonish" style of modelling and colors.
Also music is cosy.
Generally Good Work:applause:

Very nice and cute. Would've been nicer though if the dragons had been textured a bit better. I enjoyed it though :)

Skyraider3D, et. al.,
Thanks for the crits/kudos. I agree about the textures. If I had the time and inclination, I'd definately revisit them. The texture that's on there now has a really nice pattern, but it's too small to actually see with the given resolution. Live and learn, right?

Cool concept, the little dragon is cute. Nice matching of the music with the animation.
I noticed that the biggest problem to my eyes in the animation, is the torsos seem quite stiff on both dragons, like almost no movement or bend, and also, the proportions on the big dragon look a bit off, and some more texture work on the overall scene and dragons would help too. There should be more color I think in the scene, it's too monotone.
Finally, is this your whole demo reel? it is unclear from the post if it is or not.

Ocean Size,
This is the full reel. Good point on the torsos. I probably could have pushed the movement more.
I wanted a cartoony "K-Mart Shrek" kind of look to the whole reel so ideal proportions on the characters weren't really a concern. As far as the textures go, I didn't want to get too elaborate with them since the point of the reel was the animation itself. This is a character animation reel, not really a modeling or enviro reel. If I could do it again, I may have developed the scale textures on the dragons more. Thanks for your input.

I'm not an artist like most people here, I just know what I like to see, and while you definitely did a great job with getting the little dragon to be cute, it kinda bothered me how effortlessly the adult dragon was able to fly. It was closer to how a bug just flits up than something at actually has to beat the air a bit (as is my mental perception of dragons.)
