EDIT: thread title was suppossed to be Cosmic

I just started a space scene, i have a planet, and a sun...with a starfield, my question is:

How would i flare the sun? to make it look convincingly "hot" flares or a convincing aura? any ideas?

umm.. i think the best way is to create a light the same position as the sun, then set visible light to visible, and give it some noise. set the inner radius of the visibilty to the radius of the sun, and the outer a bit further... im not sure how well this'll work, always worth a try..

Here is an example of a sun that I did for a rave flyer. I just used the "sun" channel shader. You can even animate it! It is probably not what you are looking for exactly but it may help.

a little more convincing?

Any Suggestions?

simply use glow on teh material for the sun

the sun needs to be totally hot, so make it nice nad intense on the glow factor, make the glow nice and large.

for further effects of flares there are a couple of ways, with version 8 you can add another glow filter in post, which has some neat little textures you can apply, like electric or whatever, might give you some good effects if you apply it to teh sun (just set a compositing tag on teh sub object first, and give ti an object id, then in the post effect glow settings maketeh glow only apply to that specific object id.

another route is to use either a visible light then make noise affect the visiblitity, use a hard noise adn up the brightness and contrast on it, put teh visible light in teh centre of your sun, or youc ould play around with bhodinut shaders (3d noise etc) in the alpha channel of a materal, make the alpha quite contrasty, then apply this to your light, make the light inverse volumetric as it's inside of an object and you want teh object to glow outwards. see what you come up with, it's worth just playinf around :)

Don't forget that background stars would not be seen against the glow of the Sun.

Cheers

Sadie, could you explain this a bit more? i dont quite understand...could you give me a little walkthrough? id really appreciate it if you have the time.

ok, it's easier if i post a quick file, have a look at the post settings, the compositing tag on the sun (the object id stuff), and the glow settings in teh material dialog fo the suns material. also be sure to check out the illumination settings in the planets material.

this is done just using glows, no volumetric or visible lights.

here's the c4d file (http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/samples/c4d/sun.zip)

here is a sun at deepshade

and other planets too
