If you are using Max, then nurbs in not the best way.

Use sub-d poly modeling. Look at the sticky thread for tutorials on that particular method. It's really the future of modeling. In fact, it's pretty much all max can do.

Subdivision modeling (either using Meshtools, Meshsmooth, SurfReyes or Tesselate/Relax) seems to be the most popular method these days. Patches and NURBS have their place as well, but have many cons that you don't get with polys. If you were to use NURBS in MAX be warned, they are very slow. Power Solids is a much better MAX tool for doing NURBS surfaces. For that matter, Rhino is probably one of the best NURBS modelers out there and it's cheap!

Yup, what he said. There is also surface tools/patches(which brandon mentioned) that has some interesting features.

Booleans, FFD, etc.

Bottom line? There are alot of ways to model in max...Sub-d is the best. Go for it.

And Bradon is right, NURBS do have their place, just not in Max.
