bumskee 08-24-2006, 05:35 AM oo, hello everyone. I am starting this sketchbook to dig more into my figure skills!. This will be dedicated to figures/character design and won't bother with other little things I get upto in the dark. Crits and Comments are always welcome.
Will kick off with some scribbles from past week

bumskee,
What a coup! As you know, I am a big admirer of your artwork.
One thing I notice with respect to your figures is the ethereal elongation which you lend them. In some cases I think it works, and in other cases, for my personal taste, it goes just slightly too far for the figures to be totally believable. Having said that, your gestural experimentation is in some cases sublime, and I would love to see your further explorations of the sense of brushwork in your figures.
As well, you know I'd always be happy to see a Tutorial from you. :D
Cheers,
~Rebeccak

Rebeccak, THanks!! yeah I do tend to stretch things out a little too far.. i think that's what u meant right? well still studying heaps and trying to get my figures right.. of course more dynamic poses.. body types...... bleh.. tooo much to study up. heh cheers, Min
erilaz, haha martin!! i bet you are doing ur 100 like crazy now. hehe cheers man
Cyanid, thanks!
razz, thanks mate
trainee, heh, well they are pretty sketchy..
about 1 hrish.. but some took longer like the last two.. a little more worked up I guess.
been drawing for sometime now.. cheers,
me, martine and knoxie decided to do 100 gestures.. yeah it was alright, I had a head start.. martin is still doing it now..hehe knoxie went to bed.. ha!
but yeah..here's my 100.. took between 2~10 mins.. depending on poses.. some were harder and some were easy.. No refs just wanted to play around I guess. Tried some dynamic poses too, mixed up some male ones.. I usually do females.. heh.
saved at around 60% of the size I drew them in PS..
ooop sorry for the image size, cheers, Min

razz, there's gesture thunderdome happening in conceptart.org in thunderdome section if you want to jump in for weekly gestures. anyone that doesn't complete the task gets ugly avatar.. haha. cheers mate.
Small..update, I kinda feel like I been a moo moo land.. maybe it's coz I just woke up. haha.. ok.. some gestures.... well this was a little different..
http://www.minart.net/temp/gesture3_1.jpg
http://www.minart.net/temp/gesture3_2.jpg
I realised I wasn't pushing it enough.... this body type really had be bogged down... kinda annoyed at not being able to freely draw them, I decided to do some hogarth studies... still treating them as gestures, stick figures or whatever you want to call it... keeping it pretty simple..

Hey Mintastic,
I have to say that I really like the delicacy with which you infuse your sketches, I think your style is distinct and I think that as you get more expressive with your linework you'll be a draughting force with which to be reckoned. ;)
I give you these lovely asspats to drive you from your natural state of emo ;) - keep up the good work, emo boy! :)

Ello, luv,
Good to see your new scribbles. :) Hope you are enjoying your new job and kicking some concept art bunnage. You should post your Blizzard Contest step by steps here too. :)
I'd love to see you update your thread more often, Bumskee. The stuff you post is of great pleasure to my eyes and flows with inspiration! It is amazing! Makes me strive even more to learn and hopefully someday do stuff from imagination with the quality I see here. And considering these are only scribbles, as you say, makes it even more astonishing.

I have been in an art slump recently I think whined about it to u before.. but yeah I think it's kinda over tho, feeling great about scribbling.. doesn't always mean I will do decent work tho. haha. Hope that exhibition is going sweet too! catch u soon. cheers, Min

As per Nuna's suggestion. Blizzard contest steps.. I keep forgetting to do the steps for the other piece too.. maybe later.
(I hate how I have to post several posts... :( how many images can I post at once anyways?? :S)
OOOp, here's my step for "sanctuary" *shrugs*
I started off with a rough sketch.. I guess we all do.. I thought I drew a better drawing but guess not.. and then laid a colour behind it. mmmm I planned on sticking the figure on the tree branch, but wasn't sure where so I decided to leave it to further down the track.. *shrugs*
http://www.minart.net/temp/forest_steps_1.jpg
then I spent sometime blocking it out.. working big fast and fat! kinda funny in a way, despite my huge weird brush sets, I mainly just used this blocky slanted rectangle brush and the oval shaped one..
http://www.minart.net/temp/forest_steps_2.jpg
well I tend to make things too dark.. so I put an overlay layer on top and made it a little lighter and also to add some contrast.. dropped some more branches in the back too
http://www.minart.net/temp/forest_steps_3.jpg
mindless rendering begins.. I started with the main tree naturally.. I went through some trees in the forest and picked up some interesting ideas.. so vines and weird plants came fromt here..
http://www.minart.net/temp/forest_steps_4.jpg
I realised it needed something, and after some crit sessions with some people, waterfall was suggested.. I thought that or a face in the tree but went with waterfall..
http://www.minart.net/temp/forest_steps_5.jpg
more rendering process.. slow and boring..
http://www.minart.net/temp/forest_steps_6.jpg
the trees in the background needs tiding up, ignore the red line that was my idea on where I was going to crop the image.. more refininf..
http://www.minart.net/temp/forest_steps_7.jpg
TIME TO throw the elf in. I was going to put her on the tree initally so I didn't sketch her up.. so I dropped her in and added some swooshing lights blobs around her.. just a bit, I had thought heaps more but this worked better. I did experiment with some other poses and figures, three I belive but she looked best like that.. wasn't too keen on going through anymore so..
http://www.minart.net/temp/forest_steps_8.jpg

12-17-2006, 11:39 PM
Added some highlights here and there, the swirly thing in her hand and some detailing work.
http://www.minart.net/temp/forest_steps_9.jpg
cropped and refining continues.. I can finally see the end!!
http://www.minart.net/temp/forest_steps_10.jpg
added the lighting, more refining here and there.. realised the swirly needed more... and also to add more attention to the tiny figure, surrounded her with swirlies.
http://www.minart.net/temp/forest_steps_11.jpg
with some colour editing, suggested by idiot apathy himself, the image was tweaked with adjustment layers. and It was too black, so lightened it up a bit too. all done!! yay (noticed my steps have been cropped slightly due to my uber screen grab skills)

Pooky!
Thanks for posting these, they're amazing. :) I think your grayscale sketches are outstanding, even if, in your emo state, you 'can't' see that. ;)
Thanks for posting the Blizzard step by steps - they're just mind boggling! Where do I sign up for these emo skills of yours? ;)
Hey bumskee (wth nobody??? yeah right ;)
I was hugely impressed with those gesture sheets in your thread. Now there is no way I could do that from imagination so if it's ok with you I'll try some of your stuff...
You're an amazingly talented artist. I hope to get to your level at one point. (I'm a few years behind :p )

Holy crap dude...I'm speechless. You're work is so inspirational. Such elegant, simple, and refined line and use of pattern--you have such a appealing presentation of visuals. *depressed*
Damn I need to study a lot more. I know the ultimate key to learning to draw is practice, but in addition do you have say 3 favorite books to study from? Also, when you were learning, what did you use for reference to draw from? I know I should be drawing a lot from a live model but its rather difficult finding a studio that offers open figure drawing.
Thanks :)

Ahahah.. ditto. Holy moly, this is some seriously good work. I love all of it. Your black and white work, even down to the simple girl sketches have a lovely touch of the gothic about them, but I was very drawn to the blonde in the red coat in the forest with her dog... the colours on that are amazing, especially that little touch of green in her hair. Masterful stuff. And hugely inspiring!

here's some snapping of my sketchbook.. I don't draw much except in cafes and just people nearby.. it's kinda relaxing for me so I just draw without thinking too much. Please excuse crappy quality, no scanner so.. yeah..

Bumskee, love your work. Always a pleasure. It's so inspiring how much you draw.
Keep it up and keep on posting cos it helps my motivation, and im sure plenty of others too.
I can feel the half life 2 thing, maybe cos you have that female figure with birds lingering, like a dream, just far enough away that you cant make out any details.
And that last one under the tree - its on my desktop. We're on the same wavelength today I feel. I pulled a muscle in my back at the gym yesterday and its a bit sore sitting infront of the comp today - that picture is exactly how I feel, and what i wish i could be doing right now!

Hey again. Yeah you were a bit slim on the updates.
Love the waterfall city. Its beautiful. It doesnt look like colour is a battle to you, so it must be a battle you win :)
You're right. The black queens face is a bit man-ish. But I love your balcony studies. Especially the night time one. You captured the light especially well in that one. Nice work.
Kassan is great. I discovered his work on CA. Must've been good to have a workshop with a great painter like that. And do you do any traditional stuff? (other than the watercolor pencils ;) ) I never noticed before that you were from Aussie. Shot mate. Its good to see talent represented from this corner of the world :) REPRESENT :)
BTW my back feels better now, but the guy under the tree is still on my desktop, and pics dont usually hang around on there too long! I find its mood more uplifting now than when I first saw it.
Keep posting, we're loving it :) woop!

steps for the ermm ChOW "death's horse"
funny enough I didn't think this would be anywhere near complete as I have now.. kinda thought I would be done with just a sketch.. but yeah...
well, I actually looked at some horse pics.. "research"... pbase.com had some nice refs.. I tried sketching out an idea.. but meh..
here are some I tried...
http://www.minart.net/temp/death_horse_sketch.jpg
I just decided to go with this sketch.. I sort of had the idea I wanted a human under a horse skull embeded at the front.. you can see the faint initial super quick scribble in the back...
http://www.minart.net/temp/death_horse_3c.jpg
Then using my large collection of custom brushes.... I roughed out the background..how it was going to sit and where I guess.
http://www.minart.net/temp/death_horse_3b.jpg
I made this brush quite recently, for the horn.. I think the tree and shrub ones I downloaded from somewhere, can't remember where now tho...
so I drew out the horn..
http://www.minart.net/temp/death_horse_3a.jpg
Rendering.. in B&W.. nothing special..
http://www.minart.net/temp/death_horse_3.jpg
legs too short.. and some more refining..
http://www.minart.net/temp/death_horse_4.jpg
refining again.. now I notice that my horse is stuffed.. it was looking more like a deer/cow/dingo... time for some ref.. Oh and decided to add the name tags.. something about death made me realise I needed to make more reference to death..
http://www.minart.net/temp/death_horse_5.jpg
bumskee
05-02-2007, 12:25 AM
I asked few people for help on making this thing more horse.. emily, bunny, tom.. tex, michele.. john.. ermm yeah.. most said the leg was too short.. Emily was kind enough to pinpoint lot of areas, like slouching back.. and so on.. :) with that I sort of made it half horse... lowered the ground.. and refined more..
http://www.minart.net/temp/death_horse_6.jpg
After this it was as simple as putting a colour layer on top... :)
refined a little more
http://www.minart.net/temp/death_horse_7.jpg
and with some adjustment stuff tom taught me. and some more little adjustments here and there..
http://www.minart.net/temp/death_horse_f.jpg
at 100%
http://www.minart.net/temp/death_horse_detail.jpg
and done!
:)
it actually took about 8 hours all up.. or something close to that number.. reasonably quick I think. :P

I am one of the lucky few here, who thanks to the kindness of the members, have granted my sketch thread the honour of some lovely golden stars!!!
When I wander across a thread of this magnitude and utter brilliance I feel ashamed to have those stars..... a little like a vegetarian MacDonald's employee.
Your work, as it has been mentioned many times is freakin' awsome (and that is coming from a mild mannered Brit.....or POM as you call us in your neck of the woods).
Keep up the good work...I have PS CS2 and have no idea how you create such fantastic paintings and textures... a little tutorial on creating texture and the brushes you use would really make my day!!.....If you can......not pushing or anything....but if you don't I will get a cheap flight to Oz and hunt you down!! :)
I have subscribed and I want to give you more stars, but I don't think you can have any more than 5..........so have this one instead!

crap. Just.. wow. Just need to find ability to speak again.. mind blowing stuff. Oddly enough, the one that made me go wow most, until I got to the death's horse pic was the life study you did on your laptop.. the colours are so perfectly done on that I honestly thought you must have overpainted a photo at first. Course your sheer genius with all the rest tells me thats not so. Inspiring just doesn't fit the bill here... you're above and beyond that.

I believe we have a friend in common....a roomy of yours from the Kassan workshop...Mac!!
I linked on the figure forum this thread @ wet canvas (sorry..will now wash my mouth out) and he mentioned how he saw you constantly scribbling in your sketchbook....creating things from imagination....and almost competeing (duelling Banjos style) with the other Concept Artists out there, sketch for sketch....would have loved to have seen that.
Anyways thanks for the Step by step...going to go and view that again, a 100 times!!

STEPS for ChOW!
"Soul Collector" eee, spent probably all of my saturday on this..
I didn't sketch much for this.. coz I started at work.. and didn't have time to explore more ideas? and I am always too jumpy with ideas I think.. :)
some rough sketches...
http://www.minart.net/temp/soul_sketch.jpg
SO i went with the last one... I quite liked the crouching ones.. hmm..
cleaned it up... the canvas size I worked from start was 3000 px wide.. and about 4000 px high..
http://www.minart.net/temp/soul_a_s.jpg
at 100% just a crop of it
http://www.minart.net/temp/soul_a.jpg
Put some midtones underneath the sketch.. I went b&w again.. but this time I wanted to shorten the amount of time for b&w and spend more on the coloured version.. and also the fact that mid range grey tones work best with colour overlays.. keeping that in mind I reserved highlights and black for the last..
http://www.minart.net/temp/soul_b_s.jpg
Just rendering in B&W.. didn't take too long.. mayeb 2~3 hours tops.. like I said I kept it pretty loose and simple.. and minimum highlights, but pretty bland..
http://www.minart.net/temp/soul_c_s.jpg
at 100% crop of it again
http://www.minart.net/temp/soul_c.jpg
Simple colour overlay.. I think this was like the basis of what I wanted to start with.. things will change dramatically and wanted to work more with colours this time.. kinda like rendered version of a pencil sketch I guess.. with simple wash over it.
http://www.minart.net/temp/soul_d_s.jpg
I used some generic phot textures over it.. 3 I believe.. u can barely tell.. but it helps me pick off random stuff from it too..
http://www.minart.net/temp/soul_e_s.jpg
the background was too light.. I knew I was going to make the head thing glow a little so for it to work better it required a darker background.. so more contrast, added some lighter patches on the body.. I think I used overlay layers and so on.. not painted just adjustments
http://www.minart.net/temp/soul_f_s.jpg
bumskee
05-26-2007, 06:00 PM
Then I closed in and rendered out with colour, more defined shapes and less black outlines.. this probably took the longest I think.. you can see the reds coming out in the head area.. lighting the back of her was really tricky..heh..
http://www.minart.net/temp/soul_g_s.jpg
at 100%
http://www.minart.net/temp/soul_h.jpg
Just wrapping small things up... the image is quite dark but I was going to adjust it later so.. I just kept going..
http://www.minart.net/temp/soul_h_s.jpg
bunch of colour adjustments...
tom suggest use of soft light layer to adjust the colour on her skin.. works treat..
http://www.minart.net/temp/soul_i_s.jpg
Tightening on vairous places, background and so on.. the chest area...
the red glow is more taking its place now..
http://www.minart.net/temp/soul_j_s.jpg
at 100%
http://www.minart.net/temp/soul_l.jpg
Adjusted colour again.. I did it quite often.
http://www.minart.net/temp/soul_l_s.jpg
AND with help of vairous people you know who you are! for crits... (thanks heaps guys and gals) i wrapped it up..bleh.. cropped

after last weeks ChOW i decided I need to study up anatomy.. some beefy men, from arnie's body building book. best $50 I ever spent.. 5~6mins each.. just trying to get the overall feel of the muscle groups... for beefy men.. more studies from the book coming up..
http://www.minart.net/temp/arnie.jpg
these are just random super quick sketches.. without any constructions just going for it without hesitation.. 10~15mins each.. (got bored after looking at so many beefy men)
http://www.minart.net/temp/j_3.jpg
Last Chow.. heavy gunner..
cleaned up sketch, you can see the super rough one behind.. unlike theones I posted up earlier it was more about anatomy..
http://www.minart.net/temp/hg_1.jpg
colour underneath
http://www.minart.net/temp/hg_2.jpg
rendering... just started from top...bad anatomy.. hence the studies..
http://www.minart.net/temp/hg_3.jpg
rendering still... spent few hours rendering it... and fixing anatomy.. got rid of the bird.. didn't work too well..
http://www.minart.net/temp/hg_4.jpg
added smoke and fixed little things.. adjustment layer...all done..

this is a sketch for this weeks ChOW.. for gangus..
I like the left but I think right is more appropriate.. we'll see I probably render both..
http://www.minart.net/temp/vg_2.jpg
more experiments with what to do with line drawings...
so drew some chicks... kept it pretty modern... kinda like salaryman's approach.. he's such an inspiration.. but gotta figure something out for these.. Painting it really takes too long I think.. Also trying out halftone stuff.. bleh it's a mess..
as for figures.. need to do more feet..shoes.. folds.. :O hands.. faces... *sigh* help?

Firstly ChOW for Gangus (RIP glen!!) there were lots of nice entries... I didn't really have time.. with it.. I wanted to add a big plane but didn't get around to doing it....and maybe I will soon.. when I do I will maybe do the steps..for this..
http://www.minart.net/temp/vg_c_fb.jpg
The other one.. I started rendering it and then gave up.. this is like the typical case of "over" rendering and losing the plot.. :) I quite like this but it's too hard to pull of I think.. :(
http://www.minart.net/temp/vg_b.jpg
As I've said I am in kinda art slump, so I decided to study whenever I have time... ALL ref studies from pbase.com photos. best ref website ever.... I noticed I tend to lose the big picture in over rendering.. always.. so this was kinda like an exercise to remind myself to always value the overall picture.. It also helps with colours and observation skills I think.. I like doing bunch at a time so more sticks to my head.. ..anyways.. painted without any texture brushes and 60 & 100 opacity mostly. saved at 50% of the size painted.

Great stuff as always min.
Truly great :) and inspiring (jealousy and envy inspiring that is!)
I know what you mean about stuff being so far away! So annoying! Ha! Id LOVE to hit up one of those workshops. Jason Manly is actually speaking here at AnimFX at the start of November. I'm pretty excited about that. Although its nothing on the full workshop he is a pretty iconic figure and I'm really looking forward to hearing what he has to say :)
Still quite spendy though, and the rest of the speakers are all for animation... but Manly is worth it alone I reckon! wOOp!
Anyways, gon go draw something. I havnt posted anything online in waaaay too long.
Peace
Matty

Hi min
following your art for a long time here and in concept art
the most enjoyable part is gestures for me
and have always one question! what is under structure of your gestures? if it is a shape that comes by lots of practice so what was your basic structure or what you will do first if you want to make a top accurate figure drawing?
thanks
