Perhaps im just screwing this up myself, and I know tutorials are usually full of typos anyway, but I have encountered a problem in the arm rigging section of Max's character rigging tutorial. In the section were you wire up the wrist bones to the wristtwist attribute, it doesnt mention that the last wrist bone, which is the end of a previously made IK chain, will give you the choice of the "preferred X rotation" plus the "FK Sub Control" X rotation. Well, either way I wire it, (and it does work if it is wire to the sub FK X rotation), it always makes the previously set up "localworld" attribute useless. In addition to that, the files in which I got this far in the rigging crash like crazy. If not during the time im working, then without fail it will crash as im closing the program or opening another file. In fact, this any comlications in the riggin process are pretty crash intensive. Any ideas on what the hell im doing wrong would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like you might have misinterpreted something in the tutorial. The forearm consists of a long "stem" bone, with three or four smaller "twist" bones running along its length. The first of these twist bones (closest to the elbow) should be parented to the stem bone. The IK should be assigned from the upper arm to the little bone nub at the end of the stem bone. What that means is that none of the twist bones should actually be part of the IK chain. If you set it up correctly, wiring up the wrist twist should have no effect on the localworld attribute's functionality.

Just a little tip: one thing I like to do when setting up the wrist twist bones is to use list controllers for the X rotations. I put a second bezier float controller into the available channel, and use this one for wiring to. Since the active X rotation controller is still a bezier float rather than a wire it allows you to still rotate the bones manually, which can help in situations where setting up the wires causes the bones to flip around.

ahhh, LFShade, you are right. If I had been more carefull with my bone setup I wouldnt have had this problem...dammit. But thanks I ba-jillion for the help!

Does anyone else experiance a ton of chrashes when they wire up things incorrectly? Is this just a quirk that Max has?

well, I should be able to just "create end" that stem bone and try again.
