View Full Version : Vehicle: TOYOTA LeMans racer 88C
Bjolletts 01-25-2003, 07:59 PM Toyota raced this sportscar at the 24h Le Mans in 1988. Not a success resultwise ...
Wanted to model it cause of the interesting curves and for the challenge to texture it.

Very Nice, no crits!, of course if you want to go more real you can do a post-race car, oil spatters, brake dust, engine scortches. That would be Uber-cool.

Thanks :)
Im working on some post-race textures ... inspired by reeves Forc Focus WRC ... but having some problems with getting the look right ...
But I might succeed ... :D
being a car modeler guy myself, i am really amazed how clean your model is. Could hardly spot any quirks in the mesh, very solid, wouldn't mind seeing an anim :)
Excellent Work!

Nice work, where did you get your ref pics. I'm also making an 88c however the pics I've got have some minor differences to your model. eg the windscreen wiper mount which sits under the windscreen and no cooling discs on the back wheels, exhausts only exit on one side, missing engine air intake filters on the top engine deck.
How did you make the panel lines and add all the decals, thats one area I'm not sure about but you've done a nice job with it.
All the best

Thanks for the positive response guys :bounce:
soma - I must confess that my model isnt a true replica of any one the various designs I've seen of the 88C (and other toyota le mans version).
I got my blueprints from http://smcars.nd4spdworld.com and http://www.onnovanbraam.com/
I used the taka-Q version from smcars for most of the work. Then I looked at every picture of the car I could find on google with a image search of "toyota le mans" and "toyota 88c".
Then I took some features from each version and kind of got this mix. some things I forgot (like the engine intake filter) and something I skipped .. like doing different design on left and right side.
Im not sure what you mean with "panel lines" , is it like the seams between the body parts ? I did all modelling with poly editing and meshsmooth so in those areas I was just very careful to make the body parts match with just a tiny gap between them.
Texturing was a fun part ... since the car is kind of sqaure I just detached each side and planar mapped them separeatly. Just a small area at the front needed some unwrapping. The hardest part was finding logo's with high enough resolution ... therefor I had to invent some sponsors ... :D
Good luck with your version ! looking forward to seeing it !

Thanx for your reply daniel, when I get my car finished I'll make sure I put in online. If it comes out like yours I'll be very happy.
So you built the panel lines into the car, thats cool. I thought you might have used a plugin called "glue" which allows you too add panel lines (seams) to an object, not sure if there is a version for max 5. Any chance of seeing a wireframe, I'm building my car out of polys and am interested to see the difference. Love the car..

Added two wireframes (one of whole car, and a close up on the panel lines)

Not the most clean mesh .. tried to keep it in quad-polys but got alot of tri-polys after making changes all the time ... anyway it subdivides ok ... :)

Thanks for the wireframes mate, greatly appreciated. My Toyota is at http://www.members.optusnet.com.au/ksa/ if you interested to see what I've done.

Very nice. A litle like a old lemans Porsche :)
Are the sponsors like on the real car from 88 ?
I remember seeing a reportage about leMans and the cars. The Japanese Teams always comes with very much ppl :)
Have they ever won leMans? Oh yeah...I see Mazda won in 1991.
I think no, or?!
What's next?
A nice Audi LeMans Racer?
Or a Peugeot LeMans? :D
Or a BMW?
Surprise US :applause:
Cya.
