View Full Version : Animation: Rock and The Bird
DarkSun 01-25-2003, 06:01 PM Hi All,
Because of my freelance jobs, I just finished my first short film. It is about a rock and a bird.. In fact I was not intended to make a short, just a motion test but it became a short

Spectacular animation. When the little guy is trying to pick up the rock there is a real strong sense of weight. When he is carrying the rock it seems to lose the sense of weight just a little but it's still really well done. As far as the story goes, is there a point of any sort or is it just him wantin to throw the rock over? =)

I simply love it! The sense of weight transfer is very very good, I also like the lil twist on the story you did there :), the bird was indeed cute... You have some really strong poses, which is key. Nothing really to crit, its just good :) What software did you use? How long did it take?
salud
very cute. i like the stylization of the bird and the man. also the fact that all the trees are siloutettes.
no story...but it's quite nice !!!
love your little "ping" bird !!! do you know Pierre Coffin ?,!?
I loooove the music...was it compose for your short ?!?

Thanks everyone :D I am happy you like it :)
Lildragon I made it with Maya it took a long time 3-4 months but unfortunately I worked with very long pauses...In total I think it is something 120-140 hours...
Baby: yeah I know pierre coffin. i didn't make the modelling but we are inspired from him :) Music is not composed for this :)

if you were to add anything, have the little bird sit back on the rock after he falls :) i am sure you were thinking of that too?
I also do like the back ground, maybe add cloudes? animation i love.

Nice animation...
I like the way the bird is another dab of color against the plain background. Although I don't really get the story, but the animation, sound and everything else is done quite well.
You background style reminds me of the short "hunter" animation
mark behm did. Of course your one is much more dynamic with moving trees as well as flying birds.
I am just wondering did you two go to the same animation school? I am not accuse you of copying or anything. U know that right? :scream:
Anyway, you can see it via this link

Great work overall... keep up with the good work!
p.s. I love the bird!

Sprog: I used a script which is faking GI called pyramidscript... That causes that much shadow but my main focus is animation...
NileshXYZ: Maybe for next animations :)

nice representation of weight, i would have rather seen the charachter fall back onto himself getting squashed under the rock, and then the bird reclaiming his perch on the rock as someone suggested earlier, otherwise nice piece :)

Oww, I am really honoured of this award, I haven't expected something like that... I don't know whatI will say exactly, I am so happy, thanks :) :bounce:

Very nice animation I love the bird character, very cute. The others are obviously more manequins for the animation which is excelent. it worked very well with the sound track, one thing that particuilarly caught my eye and ear was when he rubbed his hands together :)
I don't think I could bring myself to call it a short more a very good test, if there was some interaction between the bird and the character in the end (e.g: the bird lands on the rock and tips him over the cliff) then perhaps. That said Excelent character animation, very impressive.

Very nice! Very good sense of weight and the character is very fluid. The only thing I noticed wrong was that his knee crashes through his forearm when he crouches down to pick up the rock. Aside from some other personal preferences, this is one of the best weight lifts i've seen.

I thought it was pretty good. I especially like the silhouette effect for the trees and hills.

Great animation....
Just wanted to mention two things... 1) Your short bears a striking aesthetic resemblance to Mark Behm's "The Hunter" http://www.markbehm.com/animation.html
2) The animation appears to follow the same story plot as Ramiro Lopez Dau's "Helping Others" http://personales.ya.com/lopezdau/video_en.html
Both of these guys are Great Animator's, and should be given credit if infact you did incorporate their ideas for your short. While your short displays good animation, it cannot be classed as an original.

This project was working in progress something like 4-5 months and maybe more. There were long pauses. And My main focus is character animation, all the other stuff is bonus for me. I haven't seen Romiro Lopez`s animation but seen Discreet contest great animation :) And Mark Behm`s is a really valuable animator :)
I hope I could express myself, I am not meant to make bad things :)
DarkSun,
when I try to download the animation the page asks for a username and a password.
Is it just me folks ?
Thanks

It is so evident that with its voice, editing, characters, animation and many other properties, you have worked a lot on this project.
I would like to congratulate you for this specisl project.
I know that you have worked a lot and one day I will see your name beyond the names at the end of a long animation film and while I was throwing my last popcorn into my mouth, be sure that I'll be very happy to say that I know that guy.
Finally, do what you can, who can stop you?.
PS: Hope your wishes come true in the nearest time...

Overall, you've got some really great stuff going on. I would just add a couple notes. There are a couple of areas where not much weight was shown in the character.
1)After cursing the bird, grey man steps toward the boulder. He looks very floaty. His feet stay in the air a bit too long perhaps?
2) When the little grey man first lifts the boulder and starts to walk with it: not much weight there either. If you look for the heaviest thing in your room, and pick it up you'll find it very difficult to move with very slow steps. Actually, you'll find the opposite, the more weight in your hands, the quicker your feet move!
You could also exagerate the lift a bit more with more arch in his back. Also, when you have an extremly heavy object in your hands, there isn't a lot of up and down movement in the body when you walk.
Hope this helps, would love to see a second pass!

Just downloaded the animation last night. Great work, man. Love the rendering. Your backgrounds are similar to another fellow CG Head. Mark Behm. Familiar with his work? If not, check it out: http://www.markbehm.com/
