30 minutes/photoshop cs, my take on a midnight garden of good & evil.

55 min in Photoshop.
Didn't really have a strong reaction to the title, good and evil are such subjective things.

Spent way too much time getting the figure drawn, didnt have time to get in the creepy details I wanted... was planning on putting a raven in one bowl and a dove in the other... lots more shadows and vines... etc. Oh well. It was fun :) It's been far too long... gotta start making it back here to DSG more often.

I know it's supposed to be 55 minutes, but this was a good way to wake up this morning. I'll probably look at this in about an hour and hate it:
About 10 min PS

j4m3sb0nd: Lovely abstract. I like the use of texture.

TimonQ: Great start, but you really have to FEEL the topic before you begin. :) Try to think about getting more depth in there too.

Erufailon: Love the colour and dynamism on the right, but the left loses it a bit for me. Your trees feel a bit top-heavy. They'd probably benefit from a bit of bulging and warping at the base, as the tree roots ground themselves. Also, try and add some more texture in there give it some punch.

ThreedyModeler: Awesome. Great job on the statue and the sparing use of texture to create interest. The flat tones really give it a moody oppressive presence.

SuperMuscle: Really love the figures (espically that nice curve on the "good" character). Background... could have been tighter. :)
daw: Very sweet man, if not a little bit dark.
Robertt: No idea what the hell is going on there, but it looks funky! Cool swirlyness.
Mats Gustafsson: Same here; not sure what's going on, but I like it!

It's okay, I hate most of the work I do. Perfectly normal. :D
Lovely work. I like your take on the theme.

I remember that we had this topic before and the one who had the best sketch had a gif in which u saw silhouette of an angel standing in a garden, that, when the lightning struck, turned out to be a gargoyle ;P

Here's mine, good & evil, ying & yang you know ;)

Whoo I just realized my entry looks *really* dark on CRT's... this ultrasharp LCD of mine gets me into trouble when I'm working on dark pieces. Sorry if some of you can't make it out well. Thanks to those who gave feedback :) I would like to try and finish it.

SuperMuscle: I like your figure's pose, and the brushwork on the moon's halo.

Daw: I like the monochromatic drawing with the hints of red and white to really pop out the "good and evil" Nice work.

Mantra: I like the idea of the moon and red orb. As a suggestion, a little more work on the ambient light being cast from the orbs, and maybe having the rest of the yin/yang shape being more ephemeral... misty... clouds swirling to make the shapes. Right now I think the hard lines are a little distracting from the composition with the trees. Great concept though.

coCoKnight: I like the mood in your piece... very spooky with the moon and murky grays.

CaveatScoti: Fun interpretion, and fast execution! Makes me think of what could be happening.. is it one person who bumped his head on a branch? or did some ghoulie sneak up on him and hit him? Many possibilities!

MatsGustafson & Robertt: I like both of your more abstract interpretations... I like the swirling colors and playing with shadows/negative space

daw: I like the idea, but the composition has too much empty area around it. Perhaps a tighter framing, or more of an encroaching feeling of the surrounding trees would have helped. You definitely improved on the idea with your second entry.

erilaz: makes me think of a drawing with india ink... for as simple as it is, it is effectively spooky. I certainly never draw well first thing in the morning either... always hated those 8am art classes! ;)

Erufalion: your piece has a good sense of depth.. the perspective works well to make the viewer think about themselves walking down that path. To portray the feeling of midnight, you might want to desaturate the colors a little bit... on a moonlight night everything tends to get monochromatic hues and very subdued, but with contrasting shadows. Keep it up! Everyone is worthy to post here... that's what it's all about, practice!

TimonQ: I like the bloody heart scrawled into the tree... makes me wonder what took place in this place. A lovers suicide? A message from a ghost? Good concept!

j4m3sb0nd: Man... I can just stare at this piece! I love the abstract nature of it, but yet you can find interesting shapes ... is it a forest? is it a eerie mist? The black vs. white specks make me think of good and evil fireflies or pixies and imps... very effective! Would like to know your technique for executing this in PS... very interesting!

Hey ThreedyModeler!

and of course I would done it... but some stupid f**ker told us that time was a very important part of the ART that we do....

so I had no time to do it...sorry - JUST KIDDIN I LOVE THE TIME LIMIT - IT'S THE ONLY WAY TO KEEP ME OF THE HOOK ...

or ehhh... eh... eehhhh....!!!???

everybody else good work!

Thanks for your comments Erilaz & ThreedyModeler, also nice work everyone on their sketches. :)

Threedy: Glad i got you thinking about the abstract forms! Basically the specks are made using a brush with some flare like shapes, set in scatter mode. It was actually included in a brush pack i downloaded from here: http://www.inetgrafx.at/ , Direct file link: http://www.inetgrafx.at/frontend/downloads//GOODIES//I-NetGraFX_-_photoshop_cs_brushes.zip they could be helpful for others here too! :)

Here's where I stand after 55 minutes in Photoshop with a wacom:

I might try and improve it later. There seem to be a lot of good images coming out of this theme.

I've been really slow to post lately because I'm just starting back at school and have a lot going on. Been working though and trying to improve.

This one didn't really look like much after the 55min time limit so I gave myself another hour to clean it up......

Haven't had much time to sketch, but loved this topic. Haven't ever seen the movie or read the book, so I just went with a more literal approach on it.

Here we have The Garden of Good and Evil. The placement of light and dark are set to create a sort of yin yang and balance, while the softness around the angel child is a contrast to the thorns and rocky surface of the demon, which he cannot cross. And of course, the richness of the soil produces a much better crop for the girl.

I just wonder why they're gardening at midnight.

Great entries! 6.5 hrs. PS

Hadn't made it too far in the time limit: (50 mins)
