View Full Version : 3d displacement
amitc 08-23-2006, 07:06 AM Greetings,
I was talking to person from Autodesk-Maya at siggraph06 if there are any 3d displacment shaders. He mentioned there is something up on CGtalk.
I am unable to find it. Any pointers are appreciated.
What I am looking for is a shader in which I can connect 3 grey scale images and deform the surface in 3 axis not just along Z.
I have tried this one already http://www.highend3d.com/maya/downloads/shaders/4161.html
Thanks

I think you mean to say you want to displace in a direction other than the normal?
I'm not sure what you mean, but perhaps what you are looking for is the normal maps shaders... Try doing a search in this forum for normal maps...

I think you mean to say you want to displace in a direction other than the normal?Yes. Displacment in all 3 directions based on 3 grey scale images.
For example if you have one pixel image on a plane you distort it in z up axis first and then distort it in x and y based on 3 images.
Hi,
I`d be interested in a 3d displacement aka vector displacement shader for mentalRay myself.
The renderman shaders I know normally use one height based dispalcement map and one normal map in combination. The normalmap replaces the normal direction and the heightmap provides the according height values for the dispalcement.
It can be tricky to extract these maps or display them in a 3d painter that`s why I don`t really use them a lot.

I know theres a ctrl_multi_displace plugin available that franscaulua... franche.. fransulucen.. ...err.. fran wrote for mental ray - I think this does the displace along normal, then a 2nd texture will push the 2nd displacement off the extruded first displaced normals - quite powerful from what I've seen but I haven't yet installed it. hope this helps a bit.
