I have Vue 5 Infinite. Is there any reason I should take advantage of this? I notice it won't run in Tiger.

well free is free but realy, comparing v5i and bryce is almost impossible to do these days, the difference has grown huge in v5i´s favour and as far as future upgrades goes, v6i is around the corner, better then ever and bryce6 is granted in development but looking @ the dev pace the last few years, bryce gets further behind vue for every year that goes by instead of getting closer, so stick with the vue productline, but by all means dl bryce5 since it´s free, hd space is cheap afterall :)

Vue5I is way superior to Bryce, but hey, worth a play :)

not really.. who needs extra bloatware that does little to nothing and it's horribly slow?

People at Daz are quite aware and have reduced the prizes though. Even I began 3D with Superbryce Beta 10a (or something like that) there hasn't been much inovation done since Mister Wenger left the boat...
And Vue 5 has that extra plug for a Maya caracter to go and evolve within its decorum... real attractiv feature!
Yet Bryce is a nice and fast tool to create backgrounds in a low-cost production.

Thanks for the input, I'm going to think about it a bit. On one hand I'd like a streamlined workflow/pipeline, and on the other, well, free is good. Or almost free. Still need to spend $20 for the .5 upgrade to run in Tiger. And I wonder if they're working on a Universal version? But I definitely pointed it out to my young nephew, and a few other people.

Vue5 Infinite = Pirates of the Carribean (http://www.e-onsoftware.com/about/press_materials/?page=..%2FPRIndex&date=August%201,%202006)

Bryce 5 (or 5.5) = ???? (nope, nothing comes to mind)

You decide. ;)

It's still worthwhile to tell your friends and family about if anyone wants to get into 3D just for fun and legally.

Bryce was one of my first appz. Still have a warm place in my heart for it. Bless it.

Yes. But, imo, Bryce is easier to learn and get going in compared to other terrain generation apps. I think Bryce is a great starting point.

At least for a complete ignorant (I mean... even more than I am now) Bryce was a very important step into 3D. Almost imediate results and predefined alghorythm do a lot of good for newbies... To get nice results just after a couple of days toying around was an encouraging thing. I'm glad I found that SuperBryce Beta on my IIFX...

I'm curious, do Bryce and Vue share a common ancestory? I ask because some aspects of Vue seem quite reminiscent of Bryce.. Navigation controls, load presets, little things like that.

I never render anything in Bryce, but it can be quite useful for generating and exporting height-maps, and if you want, terrain models too...

Think of it as a plug-in to what ever 3D app you use...

re the bryce and vue u.i. similarities...yup VUE ripped off bryce's user interface a while back
...i can see why though...it works and is easy to get around for the job in hand.

Bryce is certainly not a complete waste, that is for sure. I have used it in the past to create both height maps for terrains for things like real-time 3D games and to create sky-cubes for the same. The process can be pretty fast and works quite well. Certainly the program is worth the price of admission (free :) ).

Ok, so the didn't stem from the same code at any point in time? The people that wrote Vue just decided they liked they way Bryce looked (or some aspects of it) and copied it? You'd think they could have gotten in trouble for that..

Bryce's DXF export works well enough too. If you have some extra machine, you can just install that free Bryce to generate some nice backgrounds while your main station handdles finer works.
But Vue 6 has this great capacity to be completely maya compliant :

Not free... certainly... but quite interesting!
