Ok, a few things stick out to me.
1. The wood part of the handle is faceting. You need to add resolution to it. Hopefully that part is built in all quads, because then you could just to a smooth operation on it.
2. The wood texture stands out to me aswell. The grain in wood (AFAIK) does not wrap around and join back with itself. The grain should go straight through. Ex, the ends of the handle.
I really like the inner part of the handle. I'm not sure what it's supposed to be made of, but whatever it is, it looks cool.

I thought it would be fun to model this little guy (that and so I didn't have to go looking for hours trying to find good references). This guy some of you may recognize from the Siggraph conference (they were free). Let me know what you think.
Oh and Mike0006 thanks for the comments on the gladius, I noticed that the handle looked a little faceted but if I were to smooth it I would have messed it up (I may go back and try to smooth it again later). And about the texture, yeah I know about that i'm not sure how to do that if you could let me know how that would be awesome. Thanks again for the tips.
OK on to model #2.
PS it was created in Maya.

Ok this shark is modeled off of a Great Hammerhead shark pictures off of Google.
Modeled in Maya... took me two days but I was trying a new work flow which I think turned out rather well... it is rendered as a sub-D model.
here it is.
OOPS forgot the large one: http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m28/morphius_ms/30_models_30_days/03_hammerhead_large.jpg

HAVE FUN MODELING!!
I think I'm gonna try a horse next... PS I know I could try alot of easy models but I am trying to learn alot along the way, I believe I have even in these first three models... again have fun.

Hey, thanks for your crits. Learning is definately the way to go with this challenge, and I'm glad you're challenging yourself.
Your shark is killer and your lobster is cute.
Good luck with the horse!

I can see that you put alot of work into modelling that horse. Good job.
If you ever get the chance to use zbrush, I highly recommend it. You can import that horse and give it some nice muscles and beef it up a bit.
Keep them coming!

ok I have been wanting to do this for this challenge or a while (I've just been trying other things first)...
My next model is my cellphone... the only difference between my cell phone and this model is that my cellphone has a camera and I opted to leave that one out (plus I wasn't sure how I was going to model it.
Modeled in Maya 7.0... took me about 12 hours (give or take) over 2 days... (that is including watching a couple of movies while doing it).
LARGE - http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m28/morphius_ms/30_models_30_days/07_cell_phone_large.jpg

ok I am officially going to withdrawl from the challenge... mainly because I don't have time to finish the last four models today (since I have to work at 3) and I don't have time to do the collage... I thought that I would have more time but two things happened.
- Things got stressful at work so I didn't work on this after I got off...
- I got lazy and watched too much TV.
I will post what models I do have for critique... but I got what I wanted out of this challenge... a few models that I would be proud to put in my portfolio... and alot of experience...
I do have enough for silver but I don't have time to make all the arrangements for it. EDIT: "I'm not gonna withdrawl... since I didn't read the fact of the special category I am just hoping that it will be ok with me being an hour and a half late (or if Roberto will let me maybe I can go for silver...).
I am awaiting the next challenge... hopefully I will be able to finish that one...
PS please critique my stuff I don't know if it is good or bad if you don't, because when I look at it I do see faults but I don't know if it makes the model good or if it makes the model bad... and when no one critiques I don't know what to think... I know you are trying to be nice, but the only other people I show my work to is my family and friends (who aren't really in CG) and they say "Wow I wish I could do something like that!" But in the CG world I know my place (or atleast think I do). It just gets annoying not having anyone tell you what they think... (I guess I just want some CG attention... LOL :D) I'll post my other stuff now.
09-24-2006, 06:07 PM
ok I can't post them before I go into work but I will post them when I get home from work (hopefully it won't be too late) but I would still like some critiques... thanks

here is my collage of finished models that I am turning in right now...
if you want to see the large version click on the collage... thanks again for the great experience... now I want to finish the model T that was supposed to be model 10... lol and the dagger which was supposed to be model 17...
I do have another model a Desk... but for some reason maya doesn't like the file... so I can't post it... (though I thought it looked rather good)... damn booleans...
09-30-2006, 03:27 AM
I am moving this to the top because apparently noone saw my plea for a critique, or comments.
I understand that I am not the best (nor do I pretend to be). But all I am asking is for a few comments... some good (meaning oh this part is good keep doing that...) some bad (meaning oh this is bad, but if you do this to it maybe it would look a little better...)

it's a long thread and I can't read it all, unfortunately, for lack of time.
Just two quick things:
-check the proportions of the horse, they seem wrong
-the rose needs a lot more work
well done it was an interestin learning process

Most of the models are looking pretty good and accurate. I get the feeling that some of them have an unnecesserily small number of polygons., for instance with the 'hole' in the speakers.
The calligraphy pen's nib could be improved because at the moment, I'm afraid, it is not a calligraphy pen. The nib needs to have a flat head so that when used for writing, the text will have thick and thin bits depending on the direction of the stroke. (some permenent markers have a similar feature. From memory, I think the split in the nib is a fair bit longer then what you have modeled.
The screw, also could use some improvement. You really want the thread bit joined to the rest of the screw. The edges on this model and some of your other ones (e.g. the phone) are too sharp. Try modeling everything so that they work well when smoothed. For some models, this can be quite a challenge but you'll probably end up with a more realistic looking model in the end.
