Title: Vale
Name: Tim Jones
Country: USA
Software: 3ds max, Digital Fusion, Photoshop, VRay
"Vale" has been an off and on personal project that I've been working on for a long time. The idea came to me out of nowhere one day and I decided I had to create it.
Nearly everything in the image is 3d. Only a few things like the river and waterfalls are composited from photos. The plants were all created using Onyx. The mountains in the background were displaced in max using hightfield maps created in World Machine. The cliff face with the ruins was poly modeled and displaced.
There is a short "making of" video at the link below which shows some wireframes, A compositing build up of passes and some closeups of the highres final image (1920x1080).
Thanks for viewing and for any comments!

I like the atmosphere. Is the evening sun light also 3d or is it photoshopped?

This looks great. The lighting is perfect. It reminds me some of the beautiful scenes in Lord Of The Rings.

Wow! Very impressing work, dude! Everything looks just perfect!! like the leaves on the ground, fine detail!
That scene must have been pretty heavy?guess u use proxies for most of the trees?
only thing fuzz here is the "birds"/leaves" in the air. hard to tell what they are. judging from the size of them I'd say its dinosaurs.:)
Awesome work anyway!
edit: enjoyed the video too!

First off...Thank you everyone for your feedback and kind words.
I like the atmosphere. Is the evening sun light also 3d or is it photoshopped?
The sun light is composited. I'm using a modified lens flare for it, but a simple hotspot with falloff would work pretty much the same.

The scene was heavy, but it was all in the trees and those were Vray proxies. I did the math and the total poly count was 52,214,279 polys.
Dinosaurs :) haha. I see what your getting at though.

Tim, I'm speechless. After viewing the making of (thanks very much for sharing), the whole comp is nothing short of spectacular. The use of color sense, composition, framing, lighting, textures, additional elements; like the ruin tower in the mid-ground, etc says it all.
Are those birds or leaves at the top left of the render? Couldn't quite make out what it is.
I 've never given stars before. How do I do that? Superb work!

Thank you! The stuff blowing in the air are leaves. I guess I'll try to make that more clear next time. :)
For anyone who is interested...Here is the high res image.
