View Full Version : Skin vs Physique vs Bones pro
Reality3D 01-25-2003, 02:17 PM I have seen in forums discussions about physique and bones pro compared to skin, but were very confussing. Compared to skin, are physique and bones pro better enough :?

I personally like the results of Bones pro, it is user friendly and with BP3 you can take away and add bones without having to reapply all your bone figures. Also with metabones and parabones you can achieve amazing results. Only one draw back with the current version with BP3 that I can't seem to get resolved is that once you apply the BP3 modifier to a figure that has a morph modifier like a head of a character you loose control of your morphs...they won't work. This is a major drawback IMO.
Maybe someone could comment in on this.

I've only used Physique and skin, and as far as I'm concerned, physique is a more fully realized method, but it has many drawbacks.
My advice would be to do some basic experiments with all three, that is if you have all 3. Start with skin, as it comes with max. It should be able to do everything you need(within reason). Just get used to it by making a cylinder and use some bones and the skin modifier.

Well, managing the envelopes in skin is an ardous task for me, and the deformers seems weak imho. What are the drawbacks and pros of physique ?. And how well work influences in bones and physique ?

Well, I always thought that the envelopes in Phyisque made more sense.
They have a parent and child overlap parameter, which comes in really handy, as it does'nt force you to make the envelope enormous in order to cover the overlaps properly. It can be a realy time saver in many ways.
They seem to me to be more editable. You can add points and cross sections more easily.
Physique also has tendons and bulges which can come in handy.
It's integration with biped works well too, as you can save the physique setup as a seperate file, and then apply it to other bipeds.
It also supports some nice functions for in-game models, as well as allows you to lock and unlock vertexes, and has rigid, partial blending, and defomable modes. It's also very easy to mirror settings, from one side to the other. It's also very easy to exclude bones/biped objects from being influenced.
Have a look at the trial version of CS that comes with max and play with it a bit. I can't say the interface is to my liking, as I think it's overdone, lacks elegance, and has a steep learning curve. It integrates with bones easily, but I have'nt tried it with skin.

Licarell- I think if u click 'use modifier stack', in the BP3 rollout, then the morphs should work. I remember having difficulty with this before.
BTW BP3 is very cool, and quick to setup.

Phyisue is more advanced and easy to setup. The only drawback I can see is if you use phyisue together with bone, all the bones must have the same root. I hope discreet remove this restriction in cs4 then phyisue really rules.

And anyone who has tried bones pro and physique :) ?
By the way stillvapour, i was reading the character studio 4 data sheet and says it supports floating bones(and skin sliding!).
-Highly optimized skinning algorithms for better viewport
performance
- Skins biped and 3ds max bones (even “free-floating” bones)
within the same modifier
-Intuitive Morph and Joint-based Deformations, intuitive Tendons,
and Bulge controls for creating the exact look required when any
joint is rotated
- Fine tuning of Skin Sliding (inside and outside mesh control
around the joint)
- Pinch and Stretch Skin to accommodate creases or remove
bunching

Ah, in max 5 seems that the author of bones pro (Mike
Tsoupko-Sitnikov) has joined Discreet. Curious
