View Full Version : Trying to achieve a painterly look
ReflectingAbyss 08-22-2006, 03:59 PM I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right place. Please redirect me if you can.
This does relate to maya, but it's more of a how can I question.
How can I use the 3d world to obtain a look like this

Is there something you can do with shaders? Would if effect how things are modeled? Is it something as simple as just adjusting a paint effect? Or is it something you would have to do in the rendering or compositing process?
Thanks

if you really want that hand-painted of a look theres not going to be a better way than hand painting your texture maps (using a tablet, i didnt mean literally making a painting and scanning it, though that works too) and relying on them heavily. drawings like this should be very fast to make, that original sketch was about speed, couldnt have taken more than an hour..
so make grass with opacity maps and put them on planes, also for stuff like that tree in the background, basically everything can come from the drawing of the texture and applied to very very simple geometry. you shouldnt need to light the scene if you want it to really look like those paintings, just put the texture to the ambient color of the material also.. i'm not sure how literally to take that reference.

Thanks, I tried that and it works fine. However, I have a conscern about this. I forgot to mention it would be for an animated short, we're supposed to have a fly through scene with some corn stalks. How would you suggest approaching that situation?
Is there a way to approach this without the modeled textures looking weird? ie. clipping Or does that just require strategic placement and keeping the modeling in mind while planning out the camera angles?
Thanks again for your input

Keith Lango used a method using Maya Paint Effect to achieve a painting effect quite well (more brushed). I remember of a free HTML tutorial online abotu it.
