View Full Version : Wire/Tube/Cable Tutorials ??!
CHRiTTeR 03-16-2002, 12:55 AM I'd like to add some wiring to a model I'm modeling on but don't know any trick/technique to make them ... to make them .... to make ... (damn why could I pay more attention during the English lessons at school, can't explain it) ... Pfff
To try to keep the wires/cables/tubes (or wathever) connected while the objects they are connected to are beïng moved or rotated??
Ill try to explain it with pics:

loft, then IK, ?
Are you aware of rendering splines? and the linked xform modifier? What you are trying to do is cake with once you discovery these techniques - let me know if you wish for more guidance or a demo file.

Sorry LS3D but, I can't make anything out of it. I can find linked Xform, but what is it and how to use it???
Help!
Thnx
I will build you a demo file, back in 10.

Hey Chritter, some time back u sent me personal message??
I'm SO sorry i didn't answer, I didn't even know it was there.I'm sorry, it's there now.
Now, the answer to ur question.
1) How to make a lot of COOL wires for robots very easy???
go to http://www.blur.com/Blurmaxscripts/ READ EVERYTHING here IT'S important.
from there get BLURlib
and with the package(the ZIParchive) comes a script named 'WIREJUMBLE' which creates a BUNCH of wires in 2 EASY steps.
2) O.k. u have a 'jumble' for wires.
3) Select ALL the wires.
4) Convert them to editable mesh
5) ATTACH all the wires together USING the ATTACH button in the ediatable MESH section.
6) PUT some bones shtough the wire jumble
7) add a skin modifier to ALL of them and that shoul work.
This is my solution to the problem, may not be the best but I'm not good at rigging and animating.
I hope that THIS helps

Whoops! Cried a bit to early here. Sorry, know how now. Just have to make a selection (how could I be so stupd)!
But to make it MORE difficult:
How can I let the cable collide with other obtjects so that it doesn't enter it, just wraps around (u understand??).

That's KINDA .................HARD,
i do not know. There may be something. It's called reactor, it's a special pack for max.
i dunno if it's exactly like me.

Thanks LS3D: Your info helped me a lot! That linked Xform shit gives a lot of possibilities for other things to!
Thanks Raul: I'm dl'ing the script now. Though I'm not familiar with scripts... But I'll have a look at this one
I know it's hard and that i'm asking a bit too much maybe, but it MUST be possible.
Anyone...?
Well here is the demo file if anyone wants to czeck it!

Put dummy objects linked to bone rotation to support the spline verts (via linked xform) outside the limbs, I used a nurbs curve to get soft selection (in max3) and because they are parametric.
FYI - Curve selection is needed to anchor multiple verts, then another linked xform, repeat.

The spline clips the object on this one but you can see how I have started to wrangle the spline verts. Also the xform stack and linked points can be dissected.
BTW - this file contains both examples & there are other ways...

THANKS FOR THE HELP AND ALL THE TROUBLE YOUR GOING THROUGH TO HELP ME AND SORRY FOR ME BEING A REAL PAIN IN YHE ASS but what i mean is this.
Can't u prevent the wire from going through the cilinder?
There is a rope object with collision dection and such in reactor, and it would calc clean drapping like you have illustrated.
I'm just suggesting some approaches using standard features.
There is alot to be said for meshing out a cluster or deforming your arm assembly as a single mesh to avoid complex mechanics, so I hope you have follwed Raul's suggestions as well and that I have not lead you down the wrong path.
