I'm entering this challenge on the Platinum level :)

General Information about my entries:

I'm going with the "Pick and Choose" category as per Roberto's rules.

I will use Blender (http://www.blender3d.org) to model and render each entry. The internal renderer will be used. Blender's built-in render nodes network might be used occasionally to make slight gamma/levels/color/sharpness adjustments in final renders.

Any text used in images will be Blender's default internal text. Models will be shaded using basic Blender materials.

A three point light setup will be used in most cases. A shadow buffered lamp will serve as the main illumination source.

Images will be saved directly from Blender. No external post-processing in another application will be necessary. Images will be saved as JPEGs in the 70 - 80 % quality range, so artifacts may be present in return for faster loading images. Images for this project are being hosted at imageshack.us.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT...

Modeling: 20 minutes
Lighting: 5 minutes
Shaders: 10 minutes
Total design time: 40 minutes
Render time: Beauty render at 1200x1600/highest OSA/AO/shadow buffering samples: 25 minutes; three orthogonal renders at 600x800/medium OSA/AO/shadow buffering samples: less than 1 minute each
Application used: Blender 2.42
Comments: Hairs were modeled through extrusion, duplicated, then rotated using Blender's 3D cursor as a rotation point. Upon completion of one layer of brush hairs fanned-out, an additional layer was created from that mesh, then scaled and proportionally edited to give the brush more of a realistic appearance.

Thank you for viewing my work,

Robertt.. great start.. very realistic looking.

Just wondering where's the link for the daily selections end of the challenge at?
And if I'm gonna enter this challenge.. which I really hope I do... I'll probably use Blender too!
I've only downloaded Blender the other day.. so it would be a great way to get to know the app if I enter this challenge.

Keep up the great modeling Robertt.

Thanks, polybuilder! I believe Roberto is going to post the daily model selections in the Hardcore Modeling Challenge Forum (http://Hardcore%20Modeling%20Challenge%20Forum).

The main list of topics is here (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=395381), which is also a thread I think where we have to post links to our own WIP threads (like this one that I'm in right now).

If you have any questions about Blender, be sure to check out Blenderartists.org (http://www.Blenderartists.org) and use the search function to find answers to common questions. Lots of friendly and knowledgeable people there too :)

Best of luck with your entries, and have fun!

ABOUT THIS PROJECT...

Modeling: 30 minutes

Shaders: 10 minutes
Total design time: 50 minutes
Render time: Beauty render at 1200x1600/highest OSA/AO/shadow buffering samples: 18 minutes; three orthogonal renders at 600x800/medium OSA/AO/shadow buffering samples: less than 1 minute each
Application used: Blender 2.42
Comments: Oil tube was created primarily from a circle and the use of loop cuts and extrusion. Tapered end was modeled using Blender's multi-cut loop cut tool with alternating edges scaled inward along the y axis. Cap was modeled separately from the oil tube mesh. Mesh deformations in the beauty render were done using proportional editing. A couple of extra shadow lamps were used in this project for the orthogonal renders to help bring out the edges.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT...

Modeling: 2 hours
Lighting: 15 minutes
Shaders: 1 hour
Total design time: Approximately 3 hours, 15 minutes
Render time: Beauty render at 1200x1600/highest OSA/AO/shadow buffering samples: 15 minutes; orthogonal renders at 600x800/medium OSA/AO/shadow buffering samples: approximately 2 minutes each
Application used: Blender 2.42
Comments: Model was created using Blender's mirror modifier, which enables you to model half a mesh and have it replicated across the X axis. Fish textures are all procedurals. Using a combination of ramp shaders and Blender's built in marble texture, I was able to emulate some of the characteristic markings of a clownfish. To vary the markings of each fish in the beauty render, I altered the X and Y texture space and scaling. Blender's render nodes were used to make renders slightly softer to give them more of an underwater ambience.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT...

Modeling: 30 minutes
Lighting: 20 minutes
Shaders: 1 hour
Total design time: Approximately 2.5 hours (this line always includes scene setup/composition)
Render time: Beauty render at 1200x1600/highest OSA/AO/shadow buffering samples: 20 minutes; orthogonal renders at 600x800/medium OSA/AO/shadow buffering samples: approximately 6-7 minutes each
Application used: Blender 2.42
Comments: Strawberry texture was a simple 200x200 texture of dots I quickly painted in Photoshop. I used Photoshop's Offset function to make the texture tileable and then created from that texture a bump map and a color map. Cream is a deformed sphere. The serving dish was modeled from an extruded and subsurfaced circle. Loop cuts were used to further define and shape the dish. Lights also have a procedural texture assigned to them to introduce some interesting variations in the overall illumination. For the rim light I used a buffered shadow lamp instead of an omnidirectional lamp. Other than that it is a three point light setup. Blender render nodes were used to soften the image a bit by combining the render result with a copy of itself sent through a Gaussian screen. As with all these renders, these images are all being saved directly from Blender with jpeg compression (70-80% quality).

ABOUT THIS PROJECT...

Modeling: 35 minutes
Lighting: 10 minutes
Shaders: 15 minutes
Total design time: Approximately 1 hour
Render time: Beauty render at 1200x1600/highest OSA/AO/shadow buffering samples: 7 minutes; orthogonal renders at 600x800/medium OSA/AO/shadow buffering samples: approximately 2 minutes each
Application used: Blender 2.42
Comments: Modeling the coiled wire was fun :) I used Blender's Screw function a number of times until I generated the length of the cord I wanted. Then I parented the cord to a Curve Path, which then permitted the cable to be deformed in a manner that would not overly deform the mesh. The headphones began as a circle, which was then extruded, loop-sliced, and so on until half the headphones were created. I then mirroed the mesh across the X axis and removed extraneous vertices at the top of the headband. Background image of CDs is from a photo of mine. An area light was used for better overall illumination and shadowing of the mesh. The "L" and "R" on each side of the headphones are from Blender's built-in text objects.

Man I am trying to do iPod headphones and it's taken me 2 days now.

So how did you get the wires to curve like that. I kinda understand what you did. So you made a curved spline? then linked the cord to that?

I thought that would deform the mesh? In 3ds Max I am using soft selection to curve the wire but that path curve seems alot easier. Very nice modeling. Keep it up man!

Robertt
08-28-2006, 11:37 PM
yencaray & Noggy: Thanks so much :)

Noggy: The coiled wire started out as a mesh circle which was then extrueded through Blender's screw tool. After the numerous manual extrusions, I further edited the tips of the cord, extruding and capping them. After that, by parenting the mesh cord to the path, the path becomes like an armature, only its deformations are smoother and more subtle, allowing for the cable to be bent in interesting ways without the mesh losing its definition.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT...

Modeling: 20 minutes
Lighting: 5 minutes
Shaders: 30 minutes
Total design time: Approximately 1.5 hour (the extra time was spent on developing the beauty render composition further)
Render time: Beauty render at 1200x1600/highest OSA/AO/shadow buffering samples: 45 minutes; orthogonal renders at 600x800/medium OSA/AO/shadow buffering samples: approximately 10 minutes each
Application used: Blender 2.42
Comments: One of the simpler models in the series I'm working on for this challenge. I spent some time working on textures, using a variety of color ramps and stacked procedurals. For a few minutes I was experimenting with displacement, but the nor (bump) channeled details proved more than sufficient for this project. Once the initial model was established, I used proportional editing to introduce variations and further curvatures into the shells. The shrink/fatten function was used on alternating edges of the shell to produce the ripple effect. One of the fun things with a simple model like this is that extra time otherwise spent modeling can be invested in other aspects of the creation, which can give us a chance to take a project to another level :)

On to the next one,

Robertt
08-29-2006, 01:12 PM
Noggy & morphius_ms: Thanks :) Due to time constraints and all I'm trying to do in 2D/3D/etc. these days, these have to be fast. Before modeling I do spend some time visualizing what I want to do and consider the different ways I might approach such a model or a scene. It's not always easy, as we know, since there are usually things that come up that we did not anticipate, and then we have to reconsider and work at those other aspects and elements -- haha, just like life ;)

ABOUT THIS PROJECT...

Lighting: 5 minutes
Shaders: 10 minutes
Total design time: Approximately 45 minutes
Render time: Beauty render at 1200x1600/highest OSA/AO/shadow buffering samples: 15 minutes; orthogonal renders at 600x800/medium OSA/AO/shadow buffering samples: approximately 2 minutes each
Application used: Blender 2.42
Comments: I was going for something simple, modern, and stylized here, yet something that might actually exist and be functional, as far as designer chairs go :) I also had fun with the colors. Blender's nodes were used to accentuate slightly the satuation and lows and highs. A sharpening render node was also used to give the image a crisper quality. The model was initially created on a vert by vert basis in side view, to establish the overall profile of the chair. Once the shape was in place, several extrusions were performed to give the chair width and then some thickness. Vertical loop cuts were also done on the mesh to help with the more subtle contours, which were further refined through proportional editing. All in all, a fun little model to work on.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT...

Modeling: 2 hours
Lighting: 15 minutes
Shaders: 20 minutes
Total design time: Approximately 3 hours
Render time: Beauty render at 1200x1600/high OSA/AO/shadow buffering samples: 25 minutes; orthogonal renders at 600x800/medium OSA/AO/shadow buffering samples: approximately 3 minutes each
Application used: Blender 2.42
Comments: I wanted to model the dandelion in all its satages. This particular entry became more involved as I also wanted to establish a contextual scene for this model in keeping with the approach for most of my other entries. I'm intentionally elevating the difficulty wherever possible. Grass in back are simple extruded planes. Sky in the beauty render is based on a photo of mine which was then composited with the final render right in Blender through the render compositor nodes network. Stylistically, I'm not going for realism in this one, just something interesting that could work well at medium range and further (not so closeup as shown here). To speed things along, I set AO samples really low (4), which results in more noise. All samples were kept to a medium to minimum levels (lighting/shadows, oversampling/material OSA) to push this project through. I would have liked to attempt a broader field of dandelions in the beauty render, but I suppose that would make for another interesting project for some day :)

holy crap you are fast... must be all the shortcut keys in blender. I'm going to try to get my times as low as you.

Good work

Robertt

nakaikoi: Yes, the keys will make a world of difference once you get used to them. In the model below, speed was really the result of creating just a few elements that would be replicated at different scales throughout the model. Planning ahead, however that's possible, even for just a few minutes, can shave a lot of time off of modeling.

Noggy: Thanks, Noggy! Here's another that took a while to do because I wound up rigging it with a full body armature.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT...

Modeling: 45 minutes
Rigging: 30 minutes
Lighting: 10 minutes
Shaders: 10 minutes
Total design time: Approximately 2 hours (2.5 when counting the multiple pose setups for the beauty render)
Render time: Beauty render at 1200x1600/highest OSA/AO/shadow buffering samples: 35 minutes; orthogonal renders at 600x800/high OSA/AO/shadow buffering samples: approximately 7 minutes each
Application used: Blender 2.42
Comments: Figure is completely articulated and rigged. Wood shader is procedural. For the beauty render I decided to do a variety of poses. I must use this in an animation some day :)

ABOUT THIS PROJECT...

Modeling: 45 minutes
Lighting: 10 minutes
Shaders: 20 minutes
Total design time: Approximately 1 hour, 15 minutes
Render time: Beauty render at 1200x1600/medium OSA/AO/shadow buffering samples: 20 minutes; orthogonal renders at 600x800/medium OSA/AO/shadow buffering samples: approximately 4 minutes each
Application used: Blender 2.42
Comments: I was leaning more towards more of an antique type of design with this project. I quickly built a little brick wall to mount this on. Background sky is Blender procedural. Sky fade is accomplished through a vertical linear blend texture on a plane placed behind the wall. For the glow of the lamp in the beauty render I used a smooth-subdivided cube as a halo particle emitter. Since halos are not raytraced, I added some low-distance lights to add to the glow and illumination in the area.

Robertt

Thanks, nakaikoi, for believing I can do it :) I've been using Blender since 2003. I've worked with it steadily since then. I've yet to try, much less master all its features. I often feel I'm tapping only a small percentage of its potentiality.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT...

Modeling: 45 minutes
Lighting: 15 minutes
Shaders: 2 hours (shaders + render nodes for DOF)
Total design time: Approximately 3 hours
Render time: Beauty render at 1200x1600/high OSA/AO/shadow buffering samples: 25 minutes; orthogonal renders at 600x800/high OSA/AO/shadow buffering samples: approximately 8 minutes each
Application used: Blender 2.42
Comments: In terms of modeling this scene, this project came together pretty quickly, but it became, fittingly, the slowest of all my entries so far due to what I wanted to achieve in the composition, materials, and rendering. All shaders are procedural. Grass + rocks + ground were modeled as well. Ground was the product of fractal subdivision on a planar surface and further tweaked through proportional editing. The shell was manually modeled from an extruded circle in side view. Only one blade of grass and rock were actually modeled; the rest were duplicated and modified through proportional editing. The greenish background (behind the grass) is from a photo of mine. I used Blender's image filter to further blur that out to match the rear DOF. Render nodes were used to introduce depth-of-field in the scene. As they are one of the more recent functions that became available with Blender, I'm very exited by the possibilities they offer, since post-processing in an external application is often no longer necessary, and that was the case here, as with all the entries -- no post work necessary. For the time spent on this project, I am very happy with the results. Snails are such fascinating little creatures :)

thats a pretty cool looking custom saber you've got there....

i must say its a shame that the overall interest in this challenge seems to have faded a bit as of late...there only seems to be a few of us still plugging away at it.

I love all your work! it's amazing how you can take something so simple and turn into somethign that is pleasing to look at! great design and renders so creative! yet simple! Superb! Might i ask how you modeled the details on the blade surface of the broadsword?? I'm having difficulty creating models that have similar modeling? Thats keeping me from posting a fiew models cause i'm stuck at not being able to model detailed stuff like that on a surface.

robo3687: Thanks! I haven't had a chance to check all the other threads for the challenge, but hopefully people will stick to it :)

yencarey: Wow, I really appreciate that :) The sword details were modeled in with beziers and techniques including copying portions of a bezier circle, subdivision along some curve points wherever necessary, and then proportional editing of portions of the curves once closed. Afterwards, they were given depth and then converted to mesh to become part of the sword.

Now for several more updates...

Comments: For the beauty render I was thinking of showing sort of the life of a rose. A screening pass was added in the render nodes. The three separate stages of the rose were achieved using proportional editing. The petals were modeled in an open fashion, and some were separated and shrivelled manually for the third and final stage of the rose. Only wish I had more time to spend on these entries to do so much more, particularly with the materials and lighting. Still is fun and good practice :)

Comments: Just a quickly done thing mainly to catch up to where I think I need to be at this point. I pursued this more like a game model in terms of polys and made use of mesh mirroring to expedite matters. I didn't find great reference images. I'm doing all this on dial-up, btw, so just uploading and waiting for the reply screen to appear has been fun :D

Comments: Camera in the beauty shot is set around 60 or 70 to pull in the angles and limit the view. I would have liked to create a couple of different scenes, one with several hippopotami in the water or one underwater. Maybe sometime down the road. All procedural textures for the skin/ground. This was pursued more as a game model than something realistic, which would have required more time than was available for this particular entry. I did these last few pretty much back to back. Mirror modeling across the x-axis (in frontal view) was used to create this hippo.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT...

Modeling: 4 hours
Lighting: 15 minutes
Shaders: 15 minutes
Rigging: 30 minutes
Total design time: Approximately 5.5 hours
Render time: Beauty render at 1200x1600/low OSA/AO/shadow buffering samples: 10 minutes; orthogonal renders at 600x800/low OSA/AO/shadow buffering samples: approximately 3 minutes each
Application used: Blender 2.42
Comments: Like the hippo entry, there was a known limit to how realistic this was going to become in the necessarily short time I had allocated for this final entry. I had a pretty ambitious beauty shot in mind (a full stampede) but after setting up five different horses in a scene and checking the clock I realized it wasn't going to happen this time around. So the beauty shot took another direction, which was still fun in a way. The horse is very basically rigged. A full proper-IK driven rig would have taken much longer to develop. The great thing about Blender's rigging (armature) system is the ability, like in mesh modeling, to model armatures symmetrically, which helps cut down the rigging down by half. There are several different ways to rig a model in Blender. For this one I went the easiest (to me) route and used envelopes, where basically each bone "envelops" a portion of the mesh. Once you have the basic armature established you can select bones in envelope mode (there are different bone modes as well) and press ALT-S to scale the envelope for one or more bones at a time. More control over mesh deformation requires things like weight painting and tweaking bone settings, which takes some time to get right for every model due to its unique structure and range of motions. All procedural textures were used for the skin and ground. The sky/grass backgrounds are based on photos of mine. The mane and tail were created using particle emitters and guides (bezier curves set to influence the particle emitters). This means the hair is posable and animatable. Curve guide are tricky in that they must be used carefully or they can influence one or more particle systems if they are all located on the same layer. Moving each emitter/guide(s) set to its own layer solves that problem. I hope to use this horse later at some point, make it a proper rig, and develop it further.

Haha, looks like I had the wrong image linked to the beauty render of the horse for the 800x600 preview :) The 1600x1200 version was fine though. Image link has been corrected in the above post.
