View Full Version : Races of Middle Earth - Character - AravaL
Araval 01-25-2003, 10:45 AM Hi
This is my first Challenge :applause:
So let`s start... I will create very, very stupid and dull creature. It also should be very strong and powerful.
That creature doesn`t like think too much, becouse after that It has a headache ...
That race is called Baureg.
Baureg`s live on open places, something like meadows of stepps.
They hate caves and other closed places...
Baureg`s aren`t dangerous - [if you don`t angry them ;) ], becouse they don`t understand what means "Dangerous":applause:
[Ouch... sorry for my strange english :) ]
Ok I have just made some sketch...

Another update...
I add more details (muscles, face)...
I think that level of detail on that model is sufficient...
so I will start texture it
Any comments??

Hi, I think it's very stylish design, also it looks like it's some kind of
stone magical golem(was it intentional?).If not you should think
about making it more round and thinner,
in my opinion of course.;)
azazel
01-27-2003, 03:36 PM
Really looks as made of clay or stone... better with every update ;)
Araval

Thanks guys :)
So... I will make some skin for Baureg... I think that it should be like stone skin... or something like rhinoceros has...
Certainly that skin will be very heavy and hard.
Leszek - not magical, Baureg dont understand any magic;)
Rather Stone Golem... yes it was completely intentioned.
Becouse Baureg should be incredible strong and heavy, that any orc with battle axe cant hurt him.
Update coming soon...
[I do czego to doszlo... zeby Polacy musieli po angielsku ze soba rozmawiac... ]
Very nice concept.
I love the sketch, and it seems that inch by inch your model is more like it.
The carved in stone style is very well done.
Keep up Araval.

"Rather Stone Golem... yes it was completely intentioned."
Great, that's a beauty than.
I can easily imagine those guys when they are pissed off and smash orcs all over the place...SPLASH!.Yeah!

Ok next step: texturing....
This is first test of texturing, as I spoke, skin will be similar to stone. Ufff... I have painted this texture for maaany hours... my hand is break away:D
But I will make more details on it (maybe)
I create strong light, in order to show You details on texture...
Now texture has bump map, and some very little displace.
I think that something is wrong... I dont know...
hmm... its still a WIP, as azazel said... any ideas?

So rough stone does not have so strong specularity. But even now he looks 'stony'. Maybe add some variation: some places are rough, some smoother, and vary color more. Some lumps of grass or moss here and there would look nice, too.

Yeah add him some grass :)
But to be honest maybe it's good idea to make him look like he just rised from ground...

I agree, it looks great.
I think the idea of some "moss" or some fine hairs coming out of the skin would make it more "rhino" like and give a more natural look to it.
Very awsome work. I'd love to see your texture break-down on how you created that stone effect.

speaking from a design perspective
i think its exellent work.
the total image is belivable and powerfull.
i agree on the texture issues they do need more work.
ill be looking forward for the end result
by the way, what technic did u use for tex.
(did you paint on the model or what?)

HI everyone!
Thanks for ideas how to improve that character.
Yess.. that moss and grass on his skin, is very good idea! I will make it soon...
asela - Thx for opinion... yes Baureg should be powerful:thumbsup: ... How I made it?? So first I gave UVW Map to each parts of my model. Then I put some plain (grey) material on model and used "render to texture" function (in 3dsmax5). So I "baked" that texture. Next I was painting that render all day in photoshop:applause:
gmoran - I will add some moss:thumbsup:
That texture is nothing special... only 2000x2000 (that include whole model)... I created similar tex. to bump and specular map.
.overflowed - "to make him look like he just rised from ground...
"
Good Idea... but Bauregs dont lie on ground;)
somlor & .::STRIKE::. - thanx for nice opinions
azazel - I will diminish that specularity and add some grass&moss
Update coming soon....

01-30-2003, 07:41 AM
Ok next test...
So I reduce specularity, add some grass and little pieces of stone on that skin. I also change some colours of texture....
I think about create more pieces of grass... but then Baureg will look as forest Baureg :)
azazel
01-30-2003, 08:00 AM
It's getting better and better. Add even more grass, he may live in forests;) . Also you could make grass more green, i mean more saturated or something. These little stones are great touch, so add more, some bigger, some smaller...

Lookin awesome man !!
I really like the texturin, and would verry much like to see a wireframe !
Keep it up man !!
That's very nice... :) the grass is cool; I don't agree with azazel; the grass is maybe already too saturated; it could maybe be a bit more yellowish.Keep it up with the detailing.. You know what I'd see on this one? a bright butterfly on his horn, or shoulder.. for contrast.

Araval

just had to reply to this one.
your character is amazing mate: the weathered stone texture looks fantastic: the grass touches are a nice touch too..... i think it would be fantastic if at the end of this competition the mods organise a composite image of say the best 20 entries:all posed togeather in a character group line up: the quality of some of these models is so high.... they could do a LOTR: the lost peoples teaser.
great work mate!

Heja Everyone.
Thanks a lot for Your opinions.
mtmckinley - Thanks.
dur23 - Yes... that mountains backgroung is very good concept...
although Bauregs lives on steppe. I think that I will make some exception and I put Baureg into mountain side:thumbsup:
gmoran - Thanx!
Fetus23 - heh... I must say tahat I have no idea for other stuff... You know Baureg should be relative plain... But in final scene I will make some trinket (lika a little butterfly:thumbsup: )
haluk - My site has show my "evolution" with 3d... You know from my first project (when I was about 15 years old) to present day...
So many of taht works have rather bad quality...
But your site is impressive! ... very darkness:thumbsup:
knoxville - I know exactly what You mean :) ... I also remember taht movie.
cakeypigdog - Thanx mate ;) Yess... great Idea with that composite image:applause:
I have one question... Its nessesary to make some background to character, in this challenge ??
