OFDW 019: Monday, August 21 - Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

Welcome to the NINETEENTH thread of the Open Figure Drawing Workshop!!!

This workshop is open to any medium and any style. Some informal moderation
will be gladly provided by Rebecca Kimmel ~ however, the purpose of the
Workshop is for Artists to interact with and informally critique one another’s work.

For this OFDW, we are trying something new - a themed Workshop in which the topic is:

"The Awakening of the Underground Giant".

Guidelines for OFDW 019:

1. The theme is "The Awakening of the Underground Giant".

2. You have 1 MONTH in which to create a finished traditional or digital, drawing or painting, sculpture or 3D model and / or image based on this theme.

3. You may broadly interpret the word "Giant". A giant may be female or male, human or creature, young or old. The Giant, however, must be a living organism and not something inorganic. The goal is to practice one's skills in Anatomy and Figurative Art in a broadly interpreted manner.

4. You must place your interpretation of a Giant within an environment that tells a story.

5. While not required, it is suggested that you post concept sketches as well as WIP of your stages of work. WIP is strongly encouraged in the OFDWs!

6. The emphasis here is on storytelling. Set your figure in an environment, and think about your story first before sketching out your elements.

7. Please note that FINISHED WORK ONLY will be SPOTLIGHTED!

Note: This Workshop will last 4 weeks.

Reference Sources:

Please note that Reference may be used, but it is strongly encouraged that you interpret the reference which you use. You may use any reference that you wish, including your own photos, uncopyrighted reference, and photos from:

www.characterdesigns.com (http://www.characterdesigns.com) > Photosets

Also, see this thread for Reference, though many sources bear copyright:

Reference for Anatomical and Figurative Art (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=257570&page=1&pp=15)

RULES FOR THE THREADS

1. Work created here MUST be TASTEFUL, SINCERE, RESPECTFUL, and for the purpose of serious study of figurative art. Those who post silly, disrespectful, or tasteless work will have their posts deleted immediately and will no longer be allowed to post on this thread. Rebecca Kimmel reserves the right to determine which pieces are considered to be in poor taste and / or disrespectful in the OFDWs.

2. This Workshop will run for 1 MONTH.

3. There is NO LIMIT to the NUMBER of posts an artist may make. However, we ask that you post only your BEST WORK, even if it is considered unfinished.

4. Artists who post comments and critiques of other artists' work on this thread must be RESPECTFUL, POLITE, and offer CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM. Flaming will be NOT be tolerated, and constitutes dismissal from this and other threads.

5. I will be offering the occasional comments / critique ~ however, the main focus of the Open Figure Drawing Workshop threads should be on Group Critique and interaction. :)

6. ANY MEDIUM or STYLE may be used: Traditional or Digital Drawing or Painting, Sculpture, or 3D Model / Render.

7. Please limit the SIZE of your POSTS to 800 pixels WIDTH x Appropriate pixel LENGTH. No huge posts, please!

8. Have fun, enjoy, and create great art! :)

~~~
PLEASE NOTE: WIP (Work In Progress) images are an important part of the OFDWs and are encouraged. Please DO post WIP images as you work on your pieces. :)
PLEASE NOTE THAT TRACING IS NOT ALLOWED!
Tracing constitutes cheating on CGTalk, and traced work is not accepted into CGTalk's Galleries. Please freehand draw and paint. Use of a Grid is accepted. :)
EDIT: Please be sure to check out the best work from OFDW 018!
>>SPOTLIGHT: Best of OFDW 018<< (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=379254)
Good luck everyone! :)
Sweet! awesome theme too, I love it!!! I'll try my best to participate.
One question though, may I use a mixture of 3d and 2d for one composition? the reason I ask is i prefer to sculpt figures with zbrush. SO much fun :) Id probably end up doing a paintover of the figure for the lighting and texturing. It might aid me with perspective as well. any objections? I always wanted to do a 3d/2d composition :love:
edit: oops im dumb, it says its open to any medium. :blush:
hi all. im new to these mini challenges and havent post any work in these...i need some information..i subscribed for the notification but dont know how and where to submit my work.also how should i post my wip?? should i post them all here?
i will appreatiate your help.
Rebeccak
living_for_cg,
Yes, you should post all your WIP and finished work here. :) At the end of the Workshop, I will collect and post all finished work to a single wrap up thread, and then post the best work from the forum to the SPOTLIGHT (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=198) Forum. :)
You can take a peek at previous OFDWs to get a sense of how people work:
Links to all Open Figure Drawing Workshops with Hong Ly and Rebecca Kimmel (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=2602753&postcount=3)
The only difference between OFDW 019 and previous OFDWs is that in this Workshop we are doing imaginative work based on the theme of "The Awakening of the Underground Giant" instead of a Master Copy or working from photographic reference. :)
Please feel free to ask any questions. OFDWs are based primarily around group interaction, and the posting of WIP is encouraged. :)
Cheers,
Ok ok I will try to get something decent done in a first attempt OFDW. Concidering my fairly limited experience this will be a huge challenge to me (especially with my oh so limited time) but I was looking forward to this so badly ...
Life is really busy... I'm working on two other art projects already... but the topic is so cool! I don't know if I will get done in four weeks, but we'll see.
I just spent about an hour figuring out what to do. I wish my speed paints looked like Linda Bergkvist's, then I would be halfway done already, but I just have a very rough sketch. Maybe you can get the idea.
I don't think the girls will be nude. If I were a giant, that would be too much to handle after being asleep for a thousand years.
:D It's great to see all the different ideas people have! So much creativity is in the (digital) air!
Mu: Great start to the thread! It's quite striking, keeps you looking at it. :)
Corvax: Interesting concept! Really looks underGROUND. ;)
danielh68: The 'little' people seem like they're in trouble... your giant looks ready for some house-breaking acting, if I'm not mistaken.
MechaHateChimp: To the contrary, I think he does, even though there isn't anything to compare him to. It's there in the way he seems to move - makes him look big all in itself.
xiannc: The expressions the characters are developing in yours are priceless! There's a lot of life in this already. :)
SaraD: I love where that is going! Definitely a lot of feeling there. ^^ Keep at it!
Kencho: Powerful composition! Looking forward to see where you're taking this. And on the WIP, his waist could be a little thinner, don't you think? It seemed more balanced in your first sketch. :)
NR43: It's not just you, it's acting up for me too, though not so much at the moment. Could have to do with the amount of people around, I suppose.
MasterPete: xD That is so hilarious! She looks like she's seen a bug... Which, I guess, she has, in a way. ;) Love it!
SpiritDreamer: Ooh, that sounds interesting! How are you going to go about it? All-3D or something else?
____
And noow, time for my first real post here... with pictures!
[b]STEP 1: The first concept sketch, which I abandoned, and then got back to, evolving it into...
STEP 2: ...this. At this point I think I've got my main elements there, and I changed her pose around to something a little more believeable.
STEP 3: The above, with colours because I wanted to see what the feeling would be like if I picked colours somewhat like those in my first concept. It ended up a lot darker in the end, though.
http://www.cassisconnection.com/cgtalk/ofdw19/wip1.jpg
After this step I'm most likely going to go grayscale pretty soon, because I want to keep the values straight... and because I can't quite decide on the colours quite yet. Also, the giant(ess) is going to get some (modern) underground-inspired costume design. :) Anyway, feel free to c&c as much as you like. ^^
NR43
08-22-2006, 02:31 PM
Vilhelmina the colors of step1 are really nice, giving that morning mood. Me Likes that! It occured to me that when stretching out as I am awakening, I usually do so with both arms.
Kencho simular pose, one arm stretched, one hand behind the head, feels awkward, but looks nice :)
SpiritDreamer That's deep!
MasterPete lol that's a funny one
xiannc she's gonna bite his ear? woops, better run hehe
----
Got a bit of a problem choosing which road to go so I'm counting on you peepz to tell me which one you like best...
Very basic sketches but you get the idea...
1.
http://users.telenet.be/nr43/images/cgtalk/paintings/giant_concept_01_resize.JPG
2.http://users.telenet.be/nr43/images/cgtalk/paintings/giant_concept_02_resize.JPG
3.http://users.telenet.be/nr43/images/cgtalk/paintings/giant_concept_03_resize.JPG
1.I like that one but isn't it a bit too cliché?
2. actually made up a nice story about an feary asking a giant to help her human friends because the dam is about to pop and letting the water from the lake onto the village. I would have to make the giant more "underground" and all but I kinda like the story :)
3. I was sketching without thinking and suddenly I remembered Gulliver lol
So, what y'all rekon? 1, 2 or shall I start sketching again?
Vilhelmina
08-22-2006, 02:49 PM
NR43:
Thanks! I actually prefer the colours from step 1 too. In the end I'll probably end up at some sort of compromise between 1 and 3, colour-wise. Seeing as it's an underground setting, I'll probably put an artificial morning sun or something like that. And that's interesting with the arms, because I actually stretch my arms one at a time when I wake up, pretty much like in my picture (xD; I tested it...). I guess we all do things different ways.
As for your sketches, I personally prefer the second one. The story got me. ;)
Rebeccak
08-22-2006, 03:05 PM
Hi everyone,
Great to see your sketches so far! My main suggestion is to do a number of small, fast, gestural and blocky sketches just to get the feel for composition ~ don't think about details, just go for breaking up space with light and dark areas, and think on a subconcious level.
I've posted some References for Inspiration in Post #2 here:
Inspiration (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=3800137&postcount=2)
Please feel free to post your own Inspirational Reference, and I'll add links to that post. :)
Keep concepting!
Remember that the giant does NOT have to be human! :) It can be a creature, beast, some hybrid of man and beast, etc.
Cheers,
~Rebeccak
Here is my beginning sketch. I had a pretty good idea what I wanted before I started, so this will probably be what I go with.
After 1000s of years the giant awakes, to find that built above him was a grave-yard, how ironic the giant thought.
The goth chick went to the graveyard on the wrong night.
I think I am going to drop the moon down lower, and crop the image, go for more of a wide screen view.
architectus,
One thing I would suggest is expanding your canvas size so that the action is not squarely centered in the middle. Make some small sketches that are just b/w to just play with compositional ideas. You don't have to lock down on a particular one soon, just experiment and you will likely spark more concepts which you can then integrate with this one. :)
Cheers,
~Rebeccak
architectus: Your piece is turning out really dramatic! She really did pick the wrong night didn't she... I'd make the colour scheme a little darker, if it was up to me, to give it a more nightlike feel. :)
Update on mine:
The lightbulb is representing something else, though at the moment, I haven't decided what it's going to look like. In any case, this picture shows more of where I'm aiming than the ones I posted earlier. rebeccak, yeah that is why I moved the moon down, but there is not much negative space is there. Maybe I should have added more space to the left, oh well, I will end up doing another one I am sure.
Okay I am done with this one for now, not sure I will update it anymore, I will work on some sketches for new ideas maybe.
I worked on this piece with my monitor at 60 brightness and 60 contrast, so you might need to turn monitor down to see it how I do.
oops I went to edit one of my other post and I accidently quoted it, sorry about that
Ok so here is my other character who will be fighting the giant. I also cleaned up my last image a bit. Im not really sure if I'll keep the entire body for this one as I planned on having him closer to the viewer. I may end up cutting him below the waste, possibly the hamstring. mecha the anatomy looks great on that guy.
Here is another quick sketch I am done for the day, I like this concept though. Mentour rock back busting through city streets knocking buildings over. He was sick and tired of sleeping, and lots of ground had built up over him during the ages. But his angry gave him enough strength to bust out of his sleeping grave.
Ok... so this is kinda what i have in mind but not exactly. Im leaning toward the left panel but I think I need a harder camera angle.
Right now Im using this Caravaggio image (http://www.artinvest2000.com/caravaggio_davide.jpg) as inspiration. I like the tenebrism style he uses and I think it would make for a pretty dramatic image. Plus Im just fond of darker backgrounds cause theres less for me paint http://conceptart.org/forums/images/ca_smilies/advanced/smiley_devil.gif
Taking a break for tonight. Some more work on the layout in the next few days - J
How about a giant Lion (been meaning to do a lion for quite some time now... and never got to finish the one I started for a challenge last year) and some sort of tree-nymphy thing. I'm trying to play with the idea that either of the figures could be considered the "giant"...
Here's a couple of quick concepts:
http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/5237/20060822awakeninggiantho5.jpg
Basic idea is for a giant trying to get some rest, who is rudely interrupted by some curious people--maybe explorers? tribal ritual? Still hammering that stuff out.
Ok, folks, I am a lazy bum, so I won't comment on everyone's pieces...:D
:D
architectus..., the rules do't explicitly say so, but the anatomy forums are a lawless area... :D ... many thought they were done with a piece til the forum leader informed them otherwise...:D
I like your piece, quite dynamic...:)
EAD - fantastic concept sketches. I love the rough style, yet there are many suggested details. I like the top two!
Mecha - as architectus rightly said you have a great emphasis on the anatomy in your concept which I really love. The poses interact very well and the proportiosn seem believable and convincing. As concerns the camera, I liked the right shot, because the cut off leg of the foreground figure made me feel uneasy, but that's just me.
Thomasphoenix - I think this is the first time I see you painting instead of drawing and I must say it's very exciting as I love your drawing style a lot. As concerns your piece I like the pose and anatomy of your giant, as well as the action you are trying to get across. I would say, however, that the composition looks a bit crammed(?). Kind of like a crop from a bigger image. Maybe give yourself more room and spread the action a bit?
botched - time to tell you that I stare at your avatar for at least 5-10 seconds each time I stumble over your posts. I still remember that piece. The lion face looks totally enchanting. Huge, wise and powerful. Much potential for a really poetic piece, there.
"The Underground Giant" The Most wanted: He is an extremely violent and crazy homo erectuss, it likes much the violence, the expensive arms of fire and expensive clocks. He is very violent and wild. We looked for alive or drugged to him. Taken care of with its shadow.
Okey heres my prelim sketch.. its not finished as you can see hes missing the lower part of his arm and his hand.. I stupidly forgot my pen at home and the tablet is pretty useless without it lol..
anyway.. small story behind it.. centuries ago the earth was dominated by a small group of giants who tended the land and watched over the beasts that roamed it..one nights sleep to a giant is millenia to a mortal human so as the great watchers slumbered the human race grew and civilisations evolved. this is why the mayans dissapeared the great watcher woke up and tore thier civilistaion to shreds .. now he slumbers again.. when will he next awaken?!
anyway ill finish off the arm and hand tonight at home and sort out his body. !!
Here's something I came up with just now, sorry for the cheapo sketch...
A lonesome man has built his home on a big rock under an enormous tree. It never occured to him that the base on which his cabin rests, is actually the head of a giant. And he's about to wake up from a long long nap...
Supposed to be within a dark environment, scene main light would be some lantarns in the house and maybe on the tree...
Think I'll work on this a bit more...
Inspired by your sketch ApEx_V:
http://users.telenet.be/nr43/images/cgtalk/paintings/giant_concept_04cropped_resize.jpg
SpiritDreamer that's an awesome pose to be honest. Reminds me of Rubens a lot.
botched that lions look could create a lot of great intense atmosphere. great idea!
Splinter nice environment already. Maybe let your giant crawl out of it and give him a rock texture... or let him stand up somewhere screaming/roaring
Thomasphoenix maybe reddish light could create more danger in the atmosphere. Wouldn't know how to improve it honestly as I think it's really great as it is already :blush:
MechaHateChimp I get the impression the giant was hit in the face by the way he is falling backwards, but his opponent couldn't have done that being so small or...?
So I had this new idea, I really dig it.
Annubis was trapped by magicians into a painting 1000s of years ago. A secret society recently found the painting and moved the wall to their underground facility. The power of magic has awakened the sleeping Annubis, arise Annubis and rule the world once again.
I did not save works in progress sorry. I did the sketch in photoshop, painting the backround room in Painter X, then painted the characters and lamps and such in photoshop cs.
critques are welcomed.
to better appriciate it, turn the brightness down until the backround is rather dark.
Danielh68 I really like the textures in your scene, but I would have to say that my favorite part would have to be the people falling off the debris on your giants head.
ApEx_V,
Welcome. :) My suggestion would be to look at real reference for the face and body, a good free resource for free artistic male nude reference is here:
http://justmeina.deviantart.com/gallery/
This is a free / copyright free / excellent source for reference. :)
As you've sketched your concept it may now be wise to begin to define the details by looking at available reference. You may, for example, shoot a photo of your face in the same position so that you can have something from which to work for the specific expression.
Cheers,
~Rebeccak
Another thing I recommend is for people to think in terms of unusual angles, not just face on or centering the subject, etc. One good way to plan your compositions is to just draw fast, directional lines on a page to really get the movement going in a comp.
Don't think about details initially ~ just let your ideas flow through gestural sketches. Then later you can shoot reference and work from available reference sources such as I have posted to the beginning of this thread.
Let's see a bigger variety of sketches ~ I think many of you may be arriving too soon at a final comp, when the best thing is to create a lot of dynamic sketches, choose the best one, and refine it. :)
ApEx_V - I hope you don't mind, but I did a rough paint-over to illustrate a few points:
1. In terms of lighting, try and think of the figure in planes. Notice the geometric nature of the head below. Once you establish some angularity to the face, it becomes easier to find the proper areas where light will hit. Afterwards, you can smooth some of the rounder areas of the form, such as the cheek and forehead.
2. Establish asymetry in you compositions. Notice how the head is lower than the elbow. It creates an appealing flow as opposed to having everything on the same horizontal plane.
3. Add some trees, birds, people, whatever for scale...let us know this thing is big!
I have a few more insights, but I'm late for work...gotta go. I hope this helps. Thanks.
ApEx_V,
Sounds good. :)
danielh68,
Some great tips!
One thing I would have to say however is that in the cases of paintovers, please always ask first before doing one for a particular artist. While ApEx_V may not mind, some artists are sensitive to having their work painted over, and I try to always request to see if the artist would like to have a paintover done before doing one. :)
Cheers,
Hi everyone,
For those struggling to come up with concepts, backgrounds, figure positions, etc., the best way to get inspired is to look at old master artwork, concept artwork, browse through the CGPortfolio here, etc. I am certainly not suggesting that people plagiarize, by no means! But it's great to look at art all the time to find inspiration, after which you may find the courage to compose your own compositions and throw around ideas without worry that they be initially perfect. The main goal is to get the creative juices flowing and to really stretch your imaginations. There may be more than one figure in your compositions, and they may be man or beast. As well, it may very much help to write down a brief story or description of what you want your scene to show. This gets you past your inhibition of only drawing what you are sure you can draw / are comfortable drawing. Give it your wildest shot, let your imagination really stretch to something as fantastic as the compositions that you see in the official Challenges here on CGTalk. :)
Looking forward to seeing more dynamic compositions and sketches!
Cheers,
~Rebeccak
Hi audentiori,
Welcome to cgtalk!
So far it looks like a pretty good idea. I like the camera angle youre working with and I like how youre using your space. Im not really sure if the bulls are really large bulls or minotaur-like creatures. I would suggest just to work out your idea solidly first and get a really good foundation going. I should talk though cause Im pretty stuck now... I know exactly what I want to do but didnt work it out in my sketch so now there are alot of things I need to adjust in my image. Anyhow bro, welcome aboard and I look forward to seeing your progress ! - J
Thanks for the welcome, and for the comments. It'll be bulls when it's done, I think the sketch drops off a bit right behind the head so it's hard to tell. I might change the angle of the car on the left, I was thinking of the bull's leg coming up over the railing and that's what's wiping out the car.
Thanks again!
Hello all,
This is my first post on the CG forum. I stumbled across this workshop yesterday and it really caught my imagination.
This is my initial idea I'm going to probably play around with the angles and positioning but the general idea is of a giant waking up in the middle of a Forest that has grown on and around him.
Happy sketching everyone
Welcome audentiori, and Ronnientes, and WhOoShEz. :)
audentiori,
One thing I would suggest is enlarging your canvas size and playing with your overall composition. Spatially I think it needs to be worked out where the person and the ledge on which he is standing needs to be worked out ~ I would draw the ghost outline of where the bulls' bodies are, their legs, etc. so that you can determine the ground plane, the perspective etc. and find out how to place everything in space. But I like the skewed / cut off composition, I would only suggest enlarging your canvas so that you know where everything is really placed in space. :)
Ronnientes,
Welcome to the forum, and I hope to see more of your experimentation. Perhaps it would be good to sketch what the larger background would be, and not think about the specifics of the character, just the overall composition, and perhaps write a bit of a description / story to explain who the giant is and why he is waking up. This can go a long way toward helping determine the details of the giant in the long run. :)
WhOoShEz,
I am not sure I understand what is going on in your piece yet. Can you tell us what is happening and what you are trying to describe? :)
Cheers,
~Rebeccak
One thing I would suggest is enlarging your canvas size and playing with your overall composition. Spatially I think it needs to be worked out where the person and the ledge on which he is standing needs to be worked out ~ I would draw the ghost outline of where the bulls' bodies are, their legs, etc. so that you can determine the ground plane, the perspective etc. and find out how to place everything in space. But I like the skewed / cut off composition, I would only suggest enlarging your canvas so that you know where everything is really placed in space. :)
Thanks for the advice! I have a habit of creating what you can see, and not completing the rest of the image that would be hidden. It's a good idea, it's something I'll work on. It's akin to following through with your swing in baseball, but it's one of those ingrained habits. :)
I think enlarging the canvas is a good idea, I was thinking of widening it to the left. I like the cut off on the right, and widening to the left will allow more room so that the bottom's not so compressed. The bottom started out with one idea of camera angle, but the angle changed with the bulls and I think working that part over will definitely help. It should leave a bit more "less detailed" room to the left, helping the character stand out more.
Thanks for the comments!
any recomendations on what I should work on or change in this piece. Changing skin color for anubis?
The candles are huge, but I wanted them to be seen, but maybe I should make them much smaller?
does it actually look like the painting is comming alive, if not what do you recomend I do to make it believable?
thx in advance.
Cool idea, Architectus! Have you considered having Anubis leaning out of the wall (from the waist up) - torso facing forward and head turned to the side, as it is in the hieroglyph? The way it is now, his leg is coming forward which looks a bit awkward because the hieroglyph will have his leg shown from the side. Plus, leaning his upper body out of the wall will probably make him look more like he's coming alive than a leg and arm.
As for the candles, if you want the flames and light but not the candle size, maybe a ring of fire around him? Or a triangle of fire? (The whole "dark rites" thing). Then it would create more light but you wouldn't need to show the candles at a larger scale than you want.
Just my 2 cents. Love the concept!
hey architectus,
how about starting the 2d to 3d from the top? I think it would be logical that the image starts by pushing it's head out first. (same as birth)
architectus,
The main thing I think you need to resolve is the perspective and the use of space on the left. It's pretty much empty, I think you may have to rethink some things compositionally. Are you thinking of this as a sketch, or a final comp which you wish to refine? I think a different angle, where maybe the figure coming out of the wall is larger, maybe even you are looking over his shoulder and seeing his leg, would be more interesting ~ something to really express the statuesque nature of the figure. :)
Cheers,
~Rebeccak
ok,
i finally made the first step !
Pretty lame composition, but that's for later sketches.
http://users.skynet.be/nothingness/2d/Concept_giant_01.jpg
i'm hoping on doing this one in 3d. Though i'm damned sure i can't do this
in only a month. But whatever comes out of it, it should teach something - i hope! :twisted:
about the idea:
a huge tree produces a spawn of "evil" to protect and rectify issues! A bit of a metamorphosis of nature creating "natural catastorphic desasters" like hurricanes, floods and much more.
The tree is like pregnant of a creature (resemblant of a goblin - accept it comes from a tree). The composition should be much more dramatic where the creature leans more out of the tree and close eye-contact with the man that chops trees.
The creature is a mixture of nature in a humane axaturated form.
but some ideas could still change in the progress.
cheers
WhOoShEz,
Just keep kicking around concepts ~ the purpose of these Workshops is to improve. :)
ecsdesign,
I am loving the atmospheric mood of your piece so far. Looks like the challenge for you will just be keeping that initial atmosphere into a more finished render. I like that there isn't much explanation for what is going on, yet it's totally implied and you don't have to ask any questions. Gorgeous stuff, and it gives you a lot of room to fill in the blanks with your imagination!
Cheers,
Mecha,
Great to see you back here!
I think it would be nice to see you include the entire figure, so that even if the feet are cropped in the final comp, you can work out the figure's balance etc. in the comping stage so that the final looks the most convincing. Generally speaking I think that people here are cropping their comps too soon and thinking of a final, when it's better to enlarge the canvas and get complete, fluid figures and directional lines of the comp going. :)
Decided to go a bit “deeper” on the thoughts “underground” and “giant”...
I read “evil” and “prevailing”. Together these words can be interpreted as violence.
Please be aware that this concept may seem rather freaky/scary/extreem. If you are sensitive to violence and/or war I would suggest skipping this post. Also, moderators are requested to remove it if it is found to be offensive in any way.
Violence is all around us, even today, in a world of technological and scientific and intellectual progression. But it's been going on for ages and ages and most people will tell you it will be going on forever if you would ask them when the world will be spared from violence. Every now and then this underground giant is awakening and war is going on...
So I decided to dipslay violence in all it's evilness, where the innocent are victims as usual, using some subjects from Greek Mythology.
http://users.telenet.be/nr43/images/cgtalk/paintings/Ares_concept_resize.jpg
Ares, the God of War, who loved to fight and kill, just for his own entertainment is the perfect subject for this. He has an overwhelming figure and is faster than any other god, let alone any human being. He's wearing a lot of armor, showing his power.
Ares' sons Deimos and Phobos are with him, representing Panic and Fear.
The victims are innocent people. They're almost entirely nude, their nakedness symbolizing their vulnerability.
I want to state the resemblance between ancient times and today on couple of things:
Clearly a few persons on earth are in a position to make war for what could be self-entertainment. Not saying that it actually is self-entertainment, that's certainly not up to me to judge, but it sure could be. Here, Ares, an ancient god, is just having fun, shortly, after he woke up if you wish.
Most victims are innocent and have nothing to do with these few “lords, gods, spirits , emperors etc”. Even today, a lot of women, children and men die while they were only living their normal everyday lives, trying to be a productive member of a society, as they are expected to be...
My thoughts are with them
on to the more technical part of the description:
style:
I would like to create something in the style of the old renaissance masters with focus on the characters anatomy, Rubens being my main inspiration. Not sure at all if I can achieve this but it won't hurt to try right? It will be odd because the greek mythology wasn't documented by these masters that often. If you know great examples of this, an url would be highly appreciated :D
composition:
eye moves from bottom left corner to right so via the father to ares, then following the spear down to the dead boy and mother. The sword of Phobos attracks the eye and his left arm leads the eye back to his and Ares' head. The striking pose of Deimos leads the eye back to the father.
http://users.telenet.be/nr43/images/cgtalk/paintings/Ares_concept_description_resize.jpg
Note:
Even though innocent woman and children have been – and still are – victims of war, I decided not to display such victims. I tried but I couldn't. Being a father myself, I guess I am rather sensitive to this.
I've posted many ideas earlier but none of them were as well considered as this last one. I think I may go with it.This is only a concept sketch. If you have suggestions on composition, light, anatomy, poses, anything, I am eager to hear...
Hello guys, newly registered just for this competition; what a great idea. Just a preface before I post: I sketched out my work and something seemed familiar, so I dug up a Brom art book I had and much to my dismay, found I'd unwittingly drawn upon a painting of his on some subconscious level; the character and pose are similar, which bothers me so I may start over and do another piece (if any of you have the Brom Darkwerks book, it's page 95). It was enough of a concern that I had to bug Rebecca in e-mail before even posting, however she was kind enough to give me the green light so here goes:
http://members.shaw.ca/kenkhoo/giant_skch.jpg
and the paintover WIP:
http://members.shaw.ca/kenkhoo/Giant_alpha_1.jpg
I drew on some medieval concepts and religious interpretations; the Devil has awoken from his long imprisonment at the core of the Earth, and is emerging to take his role in events. Again I am not sure if I should continue with this or just start over, we'll see.
This is a great subject, I'm eager to see what everyone comes up with!
Alrighty... so I think Im close to what I want. Im still a little on the fence with the layout but its close enough for now. I gave the giant a club to fill up some space on the left... I might mess around with a slightly dimmed background later. I'm using colors from several Caravaggio paintings for my color palette for the moment. I like the contrasting colors on the loin cloths for that whole play on good and evil. More updates to come - J
architectus,
I think it's great to see you really experimenting with perspective, and I definitely like the first sketch best; I think you could take the perspective even further, and have the angle be looking over the painting / statue's shoulder and down at the tiny figure ~ you still want to resolve what might be happening in the vast, empty space to the viewer's left. Keep pushing these concepts!
shyam,
Great to see you playing with this concept, you'll have to determine if you like the new direction or the old best ~ I'm just here to make suggestions, I don't see any of what I say as being right or wrong. :) Keep going, would love to see what you do next.
EDIT:
Mecha,
One suggestion I might have would be to potentially overlap the two figures a bit more / give the giant more of a forced perspective. Think of where the viewer's view point is and maybe block that out in terms of perspective blocks ~ the giant, I think, woud recede a lot more in perspective than he is doing now. My 2 cents. :)
One thing that you might ultimately resolve is the smoke / tree / flame perspective ~ if all of that toward the top of the picture is suddenly overhead vs. receding in the distance, then subtle color shifts / atmospheric perspective might go a long way toward making that believable.
Great stuff so far!
Been working on it all day today, redrawing every character in the scene. There are still loads of issues but I'll just let it be for now and continue tomorrow.
http://users.telenet.be/nr43/images/cgtalk/paintings/Ares_07_resize.jpg
Issues:
head and left arm of Deimos
victim of Deimos
head of dead man too small
arms of left woman
head of right woman too small
reference used from Rubens
for the dead man: Drawing called "Abel slain by Kain after Michiel Coxcie" from a book published by "Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten" in Antwerp in 1977.
for the women:http://www.wga.hu/art/r/rubens/40histor/02medici.jpg
for the poses of the soldiers I used various Rubens paintings and did a google search for greek armor
for Deimos and his victim I referred to a piece of Rubens called "Achilles doodt Hector" from the same book mentioned above.
Hopefully I'll fix the issues soon but my eyes and hand need a rest now.
Ciao for now...
SpiritDreamer: I think you will find it helpful to build your basic geometry in a different application as opposed to sculpting it entirely in Zbrush. It's especially important to keep subdividing portions of your mesh properly while working from the basic Zbrush geometry. Otherwise, you will continue to get portions of your mesh which are messy and unworkable, and other parts with a scary polygon count.
shyam,
Right now the green is not working as well with the red as I think that it could. At the moment I think the green is too gentle, it may need to feel more acidic / yellow / punched up and given some areas of greater and lesser saturation to really make it frame the red. Look at images of stormy skies and particularly of lightning storms and of volcanic erruptions. As well I would encourage you to look at images of fire ~ fire contains a number of different colors, and working from imagination is great at the outset, but as you refine your concept you may find it beneficial to turn increasingly to reference photos to give your image that dimension of believability.
It may help to locate concept work which inspires you, and to aim for that level of finish. :)
I am really enjoying this thread, everyone is doing fantastic
I agree with the coversation between michael and reb, I like the colors you used so far
shaolin7, awsome sketch, what else do you plan to put in the painting? Flames? is he waking up in underground lava area, with some fire, or to get a contrast with the red, waking up coming out of a place with some water, or out of the ground in a forrest, to have some greens. Will there be little demons around him to give us a sense of scale.
masterpete, I like your interpretation, I am not sure I would have thought of it from that point of view. Why is the huge monster scared of the little guy? I mean could she not squish him, hehe
I have not got around to working a new sketch, I will try as rebeccak suggested, to move the camera more towards his shoulder.
I am just not happy with my other ideas. I was digging the egyptian idea, but I lost interest.
pencildj - Maybe make the abs smaller. Ideas for backround, hoving over the big hole he just made in the ground upon awakening. Maybe, the ground he just busted through was undernearth a city, and now it is all busted up, some buildings are leaning over, and some have fell over and partly crumbled. If he is way up in the sky, clouds under him and an airplane flying by that is really small. Other things that fly in the sky to give him the giant feeling are, hot air baloon, blims, jets, helicopter.
Here is a quick sketch for another idea. I wanted something a little less human. As legend has it, who ever finds and wakes up the Kiggu gains control of him. Whatever the control ask Kiggu to do, he shall.
Messing with colors mostly. Not sure if I want him over looking a farm area like I have, or industrial, city, suburbs ...
Your ideas are most welcomed. I was thinking of doing one of this guy just getting off the ground, a close up, you would see his back, shoulders and face, the guy would be hanging off his head with ropes or something, I will try to get a sketch done.
I managed to do a quicky of the other idea
Hi....Botched...:thumbsup: ......Really like that lion giant of yours...your painting has a great mood to it...Not sure about what the tree part represents at this point in your concept...is it the
TREE OF LIFE symbol maybe ?...if so, maybe some creatures of life, in it's branches, roots ect.
Just a thought....Cant't wait to see where you take this painting...LION...very strong symbol..:thumbsup:
Hi....Pencildy...:) ...Very dark theme and subject...if you are going for the dark side, why not go all the way,....make him tearing or ripping the sphere of the EARTH apart with his taloned foot as he breaks free from it....that is what he is best at doing after all...... acording to the myth he was greated from and for. A small EARTH would give nice scale to your painting, would make him look gigantic.. and the cool blue of the earth, would make a nice contrast to the hot colors that dominate the painting...:)
Architectus....REALLY LIKED your first concept...painting coming to life, had some really nice lighting possibilities depth illusion ect....hate to see you give that one up...NICE CONCEPT..:)
Hi...David...:) ....Can't wait to see where you go colorwise with this one...cave paintings..one of the trickiest compositions to pull off successfully....one of my painting tearchers used to tell me everytime I did a cave scene...NEEDS AN EXIT...OR IT TURNS INTO A TRAP that viewers
intinctively try to escape from...just a thought you might consider as you work out this composition further....You might take a look at DaVinci's Madona of the Rocks painting, to see how he handled the exit part...deep space illussion...:)
NICE ONE SO FAR BY THE WAY...:thumbsup:
Spirit - I really like the simplicity of your theme. That is very creative. I never thought about that scale.
Well, I worked on mine for a little while last night. I am still getting used to this new medium (painter 9). I am following the direction from a link Mr. Mu sent me. It appears to be helping. My question now is when doing detailed work. I assume everyone zooms in and paints in localized areas like I am doing now? I love the layer thingy. Also, does everyone do their rough sketches digitally or scan them in? Any-who, here is what I have. It is the majestic mountain beast coming awake. Definately open for suggestions. I need it.
HEY....Aggie...:) ...Glad to hear you got Painter...:applause: :thumbsup:
You may want to go to effects...top of screen..select it, then go on the menu that comes up to..APPLY SURFACE CONTROL..select it...another menu comes up...select APPLY SURFACE TEXTURE....Play around in there for awhile....in there, you will be able to tint your whole canvas, whatevever color you desire....best to get a color down on your canvas to work on top of....You might try out the apply lighting while you are in there also...on same menu.. lots of fun..:) ....Be careful not to get your composition too centered. Have fun in PAINTER...Try out different brushes....might even try blocking in your figure and landscape, with big bold brushstrokes to start with,..then slowly refine, and work into the details with smaller brushes at the end,...after you have created mood, atmosphere, shadow, lighting, colors ect.with the big brushes...just a thought, and a great and proven method of painting.
TRY IT ,YOU MIGHT LIKE IT...:scream: :) .....OH ...if your program slows down to a crawl, from too many layers, switch to BMP instead of RIFF format...RIFF uses up a lot of memory.
I usually work in BMP, and save versions of the painting that I like...label them ..A B C ect.
That way you can go back, and play around , modify ect. different versions that have evolved as you are painting...That system works well for me, but everybody as there own way of doing things...JUST EXPLORE AND EXPERIMENT, tell you find what works best for you.:)
GOOD LUCK...with your painting...looking forward to seeing how it comes out..:thumbsup:
Shaolin7: Awesome pencil work! And I love the fell of your painting so far... looking forward to seeing more!
SpiritDreamer: Thanks! As for the tree, I'm vaguely thinking that a tree might be a giant as well... so I'm playing with her awakening as well.
And speaking of trees...
shyamshriram: Looking good! I like the energy of your piece.
Spirit - Thanks. Would you do that after you finish? Mr. Mu has been saying to get your art in by greys first then color. Is that what is meant with the color under surface texture option? Lastly, is riff just another image extension like gif, jpg, bmp, etc?
Experimenting with light and color; still have to refine figure more; want to make this theme, "The Dawn of a New Day" and have the Earth-Spirit waking up with it.
Might put stars etc in the lower left corner as light overcomes the darkness.
Hi aggie93...
.rif is the file extension for pictures created in Painter. I don't think there is any other program that opens them except Painter. For a long time I had a computer with essentially no memory at all...that was when I started saving my pictures and working on them mostly in .bmp.
If you take it out of .rif, it will merge your layers and dry out 'wet' paint.
So it is up to you and your computer if you want to do all your work on the .rif and then save your final masterpiece in another format to share! You can always save it now and then as you are working on it into a format like .jpg to share on the thread but keep your .rif painting going.
As concernes painting in grays fist, then adding color on top...great method for getting your values of lights and darks established first...you can go about it that way, or you can paint in colors first, then check your values as you proceed with the painting by...going to effects, ..select.... menu comes up ...select..SURFACE CONTROL ..menu comes up...seect EXPRESS TEXTURE..go to EXPRESS TEXTURE....put slider that says..GRAIN, all the way to the left, then adjust bottom slider..CONTRAST, and top slider...GREY THRESHOULD until your image comes into focus in the little view window...you can move your image around in that little window, by touching your pen to it, and dragging it with your pen. When you see it is in focus,...click where it says..OK. Now you can check out your values in grey scale...check to see if they are correct or not...Keep checking out your values in this manner as you proceed with your painting...if you are just using direct painting with colors, instead of a greyscale painting to start with....Values are the key element in painting, as I am sure you know..:)
There are many metods to approach a painting...PAYS TO TRY THEM ALL ...OVER TIME..:thumbsup:
Does this help? Or confuse more? :banghead:
:)
Your piece is starting to remind me of the tale of Ymer from Scandinavian mythology. Where the first of the gods slay the mother of giant race and creates the world from her corpse.
Its looking good by the way… keep it up.:)
Hi guys, good to see alot of participation here. Shyam, I like yours! That elemental is nicely rendered, it works well with how you've lined the figure with a purple / blue hue. Great job picking something to challenge yourself with too, in terms of perspective. The sense of scale might be helped if you reduced the size of the bats, I see you were expanding them in size as you follow the flame "tree" upwards in your picture, which may contradict the perspective you chose (vanishing point is up beyond top of the page, right?). Unless you mean to bring one of the bats forward, coming out at the viewer, but then that might distract from the overall picture? Good progress!
Rebecca, thanks for the warm welcome and also for humouring me via e-mail and my queries! You're going to post one too right? = ) MechaHateChimp, architectus, Botched, thank you as well.
Mecha, that's also a tough perspective, wow, but you're conveying the size of the giant quite well; looking forward to WIPs and finished!
architectus: That Egyptian theme is really cool, but hey I understand sometimes you lose steam on one idea and want to move on to something else you find inspiring. I think you should maybe keep going with it though, keep it on the backburner and sketch out ideas for it or someone else might (maybe me!).
Botched: Two giants in a composition, very ambitious so good on you! The composition looks nice so far, looking forward to more progress captures.
Spiritdreamer, I wasn't sure at first where you were going with it but now it makes more sense. That is one hell of a big giant!
Danielh68, hey nice block-in so far! Lots of nice little details there, like the futuristic cityscape or the body flying off to the left of the giant's head, or even the brave guy taking aim = ). Looking forward to the polished iterations on this.
Alright, short update from me as I'm still trying to work through composition / background myself and it may change drastically(sorry for the smaller size, trying to adhere to the 800 pixel width limit):
http://members.shaw.ca/kenkhoo/Giant_bg.jpg
I also started on another, this time a female figure but I need to at least get some basic blocking-in of paint before I post. Keep the ideas going guys!
Hi...Danielh 68- :)
WOW....Really nice lighting and shadows...GREAT HANDS AND FORAM....DRAMATIC, DYNAMIC.:applause: :thumbsup: ....Can't wait to see how far you take it...:)
Hi...David....never read that myth...sounds like a really great creation myth though..will have to find and read it.
On my painting. my thought is to take it back to the very beginning,...to a time before there were gods created by men, and who KILL, THINK, AND ACT like men do...
I want to take it back to when there was only the MOTHER... EARTH
CREATOR AND KEEPER OF ...LIFE......ONLY ONE ORIGINAL....EARTH SPIRIT...IT IS SPIRIT EARTH
PREDATES THEM ALL...:)
Some more roughing out. This is closer to what Ive had in my head for a layout ... which is basically a slightly modified version in composition from sketch#5 (http://www.joelcarlo.net/temp/images/illustrations/ofdw/ofdw-019_sketch-05.jpg). I might have cropped it a little too much but so I might fit more of the foreground character in later. Messed around with the giant a bit, made him into some devil creature thingy... dont really know what he will be just yet. Threw a sword on the hero for now instead of a bola...I'll have to work on the hand and action placement. This will be my last update until next week as I am strapped for time an will be out of town this week. -J
