View Full Version : Softbody Dynamics Stopped Working?

Sorry if this is a faq, but I'm just getting back into Messiah after a long time off (overall, it's been an excellent experience :-).

I am having one problem however, my softbody dynamics stopped working at one point?

Some scenes, it works great, some it simply doesn't. I don't believe there are any major changes to the character and it's hardly a complex rig. Just one bone deform, 2D IK legs and the rest FK. But my wing skin stopped going flappy-flappy at one point.

Could I have hit some sort of "don't calculate" hotkey by accident? If anybody's willing to provide up a short list of places to look and get this running again, it'd be greatly appreciated!

Is the relevant surface name correctly typed into the Soft Mapping block of the SB effect?

Yep, double checked. The surface seems to be affected but instead of the proper softbody effect, I get more of a "crinkling" of the polys and it doesn't move. Deleting and re-applying the softbody effect doesn't change the result.

On a fresh scene with the same object loaded, the softbody effect works fine, as it does on other scenes with the same rig. Somehow the scene's been munged up and I can't for the life of me figure how to "unmung" it....

Why not post a project file and let some of us check it out then...

May do. Though it'll really give away a plot twist for a series :-).

In any case, I'm closer to tracking this down. It's the bone deform stopping the softbodies from working. Just going through and disabling parts of the rig to try and sus out what the culprit is. I don't particularly want to re-rig, but will if I have to I guess...

Got it.

I'd put a keyframe at frame0 of my "root" bone (first created, parent of all). Just reset it and all is working again. K, guess I won't be animating with that but will transfer it's animation to a parent null above.

Is this some sort of no-no with Messiah now? Really, I've been out of things since 1.5...

Thanks for the assist Paul!

Thanks for the assist Paul!Hey, I was just here to listen to you talking to yourself about your problem. Glad to help. Glad you figured it out.

Heh. Better than muttered curses coming my desk anyway :-).

What I'd done was scale up the object via the bone system and assumed that turning on "use previous deformations" in the softbody panel would take care of things. Not in this case anyway...

I'll just scale up the master model and rejig the rig properly in my next pass at 'em. No biggie.
