To make a story short, I purchased AE 6.5 standard a while ago and discovered just recently that I actually needed beter keying tools. An upgrade to AE7 Pro seems a little expensive and overkill, as I only need the Keylight plugin.
After searching I found a link to the Foundry website where they had a demo of Keylight 1.0v4 which I downloaded and tried out.
Quite impressed by the results of this plugin, I was looking to upgrade to the pro version, or alternatively purchasing the Keylight plugin only. The plugin didn't seem to be available anymore from the Foundry website (at least not for AE), so I looked around and found a second-hand used Keylight that I could purchase (version 1.0v4)
But when I installed the plugin and started AE I got a warning that After Effects could not load a plugin (Keylight) as it requires the Pro version of AE.
Now, the demo did work without a problem, but this full version doesn't. I am starting to suspect that this "second-hand" plugin might not exactly be a legal piece of software.
But benefit of doubt ... I am wondering if I am not doing something wrong and that this plugin should work even with the standard version.
Has anyone an idea how to get this plugin working with the standard version of AE 6.5, or have I been ripped off ?

Well, to say it short: you've been ripped. Keylight (for AE) is under exclusive license by Adobe and you cannot for the life buy it separately no matter how much you want (actually only the pre-release version .93 was available for a very limited time when the deal with Adobe wasn't complete yet as I remember). The plugin is compiled as such that it looks for several other components exclusive to the Professional version - just a few bytes that stop you from using it... I just hope you didn't pay too much.

Thanks for the info.
I was afraid it would turn out to be a rip-off, it just seemed to good to be true. Lesson learned.

The only thing I don't understand is that the demo from The Foundry (also 1.0v4) does work with the standard edition.

Since Keylight is not part of the AE tryout when you download it and The Foundry still posses all rights to the trademark and code, they offer it on their website. It does not contain any specific code that ties it to any product hence you can even try it with the Standard version.
