View Full Version : Skin modifier causes crash
Proudhon 08-21-2006, 02:39 PM Hi everyone. Hopefully someone can help me with this one, because I'm fresh out of ideas.
I have constructed a lowpoly model and 3dsMax crashes as soon as I exit 'Edit Envelopes' in the skin modifier.
Amongst my futile tries I have tried reset Xform, replace the rig, collapse/merge/detach the model, divide the model into several pieces. Nothing works for me.
(Linked Xform does work, but is not an option, the exporter doesn't support it.)

Give snapshot a try.
Also, try exporting the mesh as an obj, then reimport it.
If none of that works, the problem may be in the rig.

You have a very odd problem there. What version of Max are you using? Do you have any other third party plugins running at all? What does the stack look like on the object?
Can you export the model to the 3DS format and then inport it into a new clean max file and test to see if you can do it then. Have you tried merging all of the character into a new scene to see if it is something in that Max file that is causing the problems?

Thanks for the response.
Exports to either .obj or .3ds, merging to a new scene and snapshot are not the solution. Nor is merging in a new scene.
No stack at all, the model is collapsed mesh.
No plugins should be running.
Rig should be fine: I can rig a teapot to the structure with no problems.
But trying to skin the model to a new set of bones makes it crash too.
I use 3dsmax 8 SP 2.

Yes I have, no results.
Thanks for the response.

These are tests to see what the problem might be. If you do it and it works it will tell you that it is the mesh causing the problem.
Can you upload the file or part of the file for me to look at.

You'll get a cigar if you find the problem.
(I just hope it's not human error.)

I exported it as an OBJ and reimported it, made the skin, and it no longer crashes.

That is a bit of a surprise to me. Do you have any problems skinning, before you export and import the model?
By the way, thank you for having taken the time to try it.

When I first opened the file and tried to edit the envelopes it crashed just like you said it would. After exporting then importing it is fine.

OK, I've exported the mesh on a different computer, and imported it back again.
And it works.....for just a little while.....
Before I could finish the skinning the same problem arose.
More ideas will be much appreciated.

Well, you can also try cleaning up the geometry. Put an "STL check" modifier on it. I see it shows 109 errors. Multiple edges, Double Faces, and Open Edges. Clean up the geometry or rebuild it until you have no errors, except Open Edges that you expect to have.
