this may seem like a very simple question/answer but its drivinig me nuts.

I have a mechanical arm i need to animate, I have all the parts and just linked ass parents etc in 3dmax.
now its all well and good untill i try to animate something like the fingers, unless the whole arm is sitting at 90deg the fingers wont move at the right angles.

any ideas how to get the independant finger joints to constrain to their personal axis?
if i make sense. Im sure its a very simple answer - buggered if i know tho.
picture of problem - that finger rotates on the world axis not its own axis

Are the fingers constrained in some way? It sound kinda like some crazy gimbal issue. Did you turm on heirachal locks?

From looking at the grid it looks like you are using the world axis.. Try alt+rightclicking (also on teh toolbar) and switch to the local axis. That should solve the problem unless you have position constraints or links or orientation constraints or orientation problems in the pivot.

Fantastic, I havent tried it but it sounds pretty much like a fix to me
thanks in advance.
have a great day.
