Due to the large number of images in this thread I've decided to make a few changes to the posts in order for my entries to be viewed more easily.

All the secondary images (those other than the main beauty render) are thumbnails that link to the 800x600 versions. This should help loading times a bit.

Subject: 65 - Screwdriver
Time Taken: 1hr 45 mins
Program Used: 3dsmax 8
Description: One of my dad's old screwdrivers I found laying about, it was nice and uneven in places and had defects and some moulding edges on it which I knew would be good for adding detail to such a simple thing as a screwdriver.

Wow, how'd you do the lettering? Nurbs, polys, boolean? I've considered that before, but Wow it becomes quite difficult to make it keep it's shape. Goodjob. Only crit, that cylindrical extension beyond the handle makes the whole thing appear like a lightsaber hilt. But who says star wars nerds can't design power tools?

lol....lettering was done using probooleans in max8.....

as for the lightsaberyness.....well...thats how the screwdriver really is...lol....plus I'll be doing a lightsaber for real as model number 5

You've definitely got the hard body modeling down pretty well, so what about trying some of the organic models? I didn't notice any in your list. After all, this is about improving, and you don't seem to need a whole lot of improvment in hardbody models.

actually, this challenge is supose to be non-organic only. the last challenge was organic and so will be the one after this. but why are there organic models in the list Roberto?

anyways, good work. keep going:thumbsup:

Honestly the non organics it to add some variety for those who want to try something different.

Yes, I think it definitely pays to have good organic skills, and they require a lot more practice as well. A lot of people shy away from it, and for good reason, because it is certainly harder. Trying to picture the exact topology of a snails shell is a lot harder than tyring to picture the exact shpe of a more geometric object such as an mp3 player.
A lot of hard body modeling consists of beveling and booleans, and generally doesn't create a high level of difficulty, even when the level of complexity gets high.

thanks MVDB, oDDity, fx81, Roberto, mike0006, polybuilder and prayas for your comments.

With regards to the lack of organics in my list, it's really because I'm avoiding them, it just I'm using this challenge as a reinforcer for my modelling for my transformer project which is primarily hard body stuff. Plus I thought I'd have more chance of completing the challenge if I stuck to more hard bodied objects.

I do have one question for Roberto though...

On the list there is an iPod...I was wondering if we are allowed to interpret that just as an mp3 player thus allowing us to model something other than an iPod? cos there's not much detail to an iPod.

May not be a model today (I'm ahead as it is), I've been told I should try and stay off my feet today and away from the computer....lol...so I guess my paper boat will have to wait....maybe...

Subject: 39 - Paper Boat
Time Taken: 2hrs
Program Used: 3dsmax 8
Description: I thought I would get a boat design that wasn't the conventional triangle boat just to be different. I also charged into it thinking it'd be pretty easy...lol..2 hours later I came out with this and its probly the model I'm the least happy with...I just got frustrated with it in the end....I may end up doing 31 models...just so I can replace it...lol

The texture is also a bit dodgy...its a procedural with a gradient ramp for the lines....it almost worked for the whole model but as you can see theres the one bit that just wouldn't go right...lol

I was wondering what peoples opinion was on using these models (not mine specifically...but ones resulting from this challenge) in something like a modelling reel?..is there the potential for models that are resultant of this challenge to be of good enough quality to make the cut on a reel?...cos I'm going to be making one soon...and this might be a good source of material for it...

first of all nice design on the boat. good to decide not to do an average paper boat.

But now for the second thing you pointed out.
Models coming out of this challenge. I was thinking 'bout this before. There will be a pretty big bunch of class A models when we are all finished! So do a model database or an animation?

Hmm need to think about that.

Keep up the pace!

About the demo reel. I think it would be a bad idea to put something you threw together in a day on your demo reel. But, on the other hand, if you made something really kick ass then I might be neat to show the model and put a caption like, "Finished in 8 hours."

mike0006, that what i was thinking, an employer may be impressed by seeing a large volume of models completed to a certain level of quality within small amounts of time.

roberto, cheers for the clarification and thanks for the comment

Model 07
Subject: 78 - PSP
Time Taken: 9 hours
Program Used: 3dsmax 8
Description: I'm over the moon with how this turned out...there were a few moments where I had doubts about how it would come out but it all worked out. I had alot of good reference for it (site linked below) which really helped in the absence of the physical PSP. I will call the model complete for now...but if I find the time I'm going to go back and model the battery and memory card areas (the panels are already spearated) as well as the disc bay and a UMD disc, but thats only if I get to it.

Just a note, the buttons and d-pad look a little odd because I've modelled them with a clear plastic section on top of a black plastic section, so its the refraction thats putting the other colours on their edges...

Theres also a few niggles in the mesh which show up in the non shaded renders, I'll endeavour to fix those up.

hey Paul what a great models, FANTASTIC:thumbsup:...very well done with good shapes and detail!!.

I wanted to ask you, what technique do you use for model this hard body models?...is it polys?..or NURBS?

i ask because i make just organic models but i want to learn now non-organic hard body models and even though i don`t now the NURBS technique i have heard that is used a lot for non-organic work...

please share your workflow and the techniques and tools that you use..

thanks and again wonderful work:thumbsup:

robo3687

yolao, thanks and as for how i do this, it's all being done with straight poly modelling, I'm allergic to NURBS...lol.
Rough description of workflow I follow in max is:

1. I usually start with a box or other primitive roughly sized to the proportions of what I want to model.
2. Before refining the shape I divide it up either with poly edit tools or the segments settings on the primitive.
3. Then I convert to editable poly and get the profiles in each orthographic view as close as possible.
4. Then its basically a case of going haywire with Quickslice, Cut, Chamfer, Insert, Extrude, Bevel, Connect and other tools until I get the desired result.

I apologise...that was the dodgiest explanataion ever....lol...I hope some of it made sense...

SantoAnderson, cheers.

I find it hard to believe you made that gameboy from scratch in 3:30 minutes, considering the camera took 20 hours.
You should talk to the guinness world records people, I bet there aren't too many people who could model a gameboy with that detail in that time.

oDDity, in regards to the times I'm taking the Gameboy and the Camera were two very different models with two very different approaches taken. The Gameboy was something that I actually had and could hold in my hands and measure and thus obtain the model very quickly, I did it sitting in front of the tv one night from about 7:30 till 11:00.

The camera on the other hand was something that I did not own (as they cost $9,000 here in Oz) and had only limited pictures and diagrams from the user manual to work from....I havent even seen one before in person. So there was alot of trial and error invovled with shaping some areas (eg. eyepiece area and handstrap area) and just with proportions and such....it took alot longer to do the camera than I originally planned on....

anyways...the ds is all done...will be posting it soon....

I actually wish I done this challenge myself now. I've never really tried modeling little hardbody items like these against the clock. I'd be interested to see how good your times really are compared to what I could do.
Some of your times seem very fast though, I doubt I could do it in the same time, but it's hard to compare since I do mainly organic models, which take longer in general.
Do you feel you are deliberately rushing though these, or are you just modeling at your normal speed?

robo3687
09-05-2006, 01:22 AM
oDDity, there are some where I have started out fully intending on spending a fair amount of time on but then end up sort of rushing through it, some I rush all together...the hammer is a good example of that. Mostly I'm modelling at my standard pace, and that standard seems to be getting better as I go along (seems the point of the challenge has worked...lol)...

thanks morphius_ms

cu441es my sleep has suffered a little from the challenge, most of the time I try and only model during the day and up until about 10:30 at night....sometimes if I'm on a roll I do go later (either on purpose or just by losing track of time)...I think the latest I've gone on this challenge is about 3 o'clock...i think that was during the video camera....which wasn't done in one stint...i think I spread it across about 2 1/2 days...

alshakno, thanks and I'm using 3dsmax 8 to model all this and the times I'm posting include shading and rendering time. Longest time I've had for a render is about 6 minutes.

good work man, love the ds and cell phone, very impressive.

the detail on the long sword is very nice, to improve it, maybe you could make the sword feel heavier, but not too sure b/c I can't see the proportions of the blade relative to the handle in your renders.

GOOD WORK MAN, KEEP e'm COMING!

ok I have to ask... I've seen words.. I've seen designs and I've seen details that I can't figure out how you guys make them so I am just going to ask... on the handle of the fork...

how did you get that to look that way (especially that fast) ...

is it a displacement map? or is it actually modeled in?

if it is modeled in, how would you do that...

same question(s) for the spoon and the words...

PS awesome sword, spoon, and fork (hense why I'm asking you lol :D)

robo3687
09-08-2006, 07:49 AM
morphius_ms, I'd be happy to explain how I did those bits...

Fork Handle Pattern
1. I worked out the repeating pattern in the fork then using splines I drew the small section.
2. Then I duplicated the pattern up the handle
3. I then applied an Extrude modifier to the spline
4. Then after converting to Editable Poly I applied a small bevel to the top polygons of the pattern.
5. I then duplicated the pattern and positioned them top and bottom on the fork in preparation for the boolean.
6. Then using Power Booleans I made a union on the top piece and a subtraction on the bottom piece.
7. The slight bump behind the main pattern is achieved with a bump map (I think it was a Cellular map)

Fork Text
Similar process as above only using a text shape and not splines, and a union operation in power booleans.

Spoon Text
This was done the same way, except before extruding the text I had to apply several Bend modifiers in order to get it to sit right in the concave of the spoon. A subtraction operation was used in this case too.

Hope that helps...

Model 25
Subject: 66 - Coffee Mug
Time Taken: 10 hours
Program Used: 3dsmax 8
Description: This model is the bane of my challenge....lol....I was excited when I started out doing it because it was going to be a different sort of coffee mug to the regular old mug. In fact its a collectible Batman Forever Mug with The Riddler on it from McDOnalds in 1995...lol...

But by the time I was nearing the end of it I was so sick of it...mainly because I think it was slighty above me to do and it wasn't coming out as I had originally thought it would. But not to worry, I pushed on and came out with this....not my most polished model for this comp, but hey...its kinda interesting at least...

Wow... After looking through the models so far I dont think I have any criticism for you LOL, your models are really good.

I especially liked your approach on the "Fork lift" and "iPod" models. The Zen Touch looks almost exactly like the one I have next to me :P All the way down to the textured chrome finish on the top border. The lego forklift is also very interesting.

thanks a bunch Snowstorm.

I was also surprised at how much the Zen came out looking like the real thing...lol

Ok I've taken a look at booleans (and I really don't like them unless you can persuade me otherwise)... The thing that I don't like is that with booleans you end up with a really bad geometry, (PS I'm working in maya so it may be an option in 3ds max that is not in maya)... meaning instead of quads you end up with a very bad polygon (like a quad with holes in it or a 20 sided polygon)...

are you just ignoring that one/many more bad polygons? If so is this standard practice in the industry, as long as it looks ok??

there is a tool in maya called "Clean up Polygon" which could convert them all into triangles and then I could quadrangulate them... but that ends up with me not having two things... a. depending on how maya automatically cleans up the mesh... not a completely quad mesh... and b. really badly shaped quads...

if this is similar to how you fix this problem... does it really matter how the quads look as long as the final output looks real, since it really isn't going to be bending??? and also does it really matter if there are triangles on the mesh...

I've been told that having quads is the rule for everything and this is really bugging me...

I know you could answer me this in a bunch of words or just one picture (I'm very quick on the uptake)... but I had to ask you in words... though I understand if you are confused.

Matthew (aka morphius_ms)

PS I'm still working on this (saw your post on robertt's... I just took a few days off for a friends birthday... the other days I just slacked off too much and I realized that now I am here to finish it.

PSS I recognize your skills and think that your models are completely off the wall that is why I'm asking you so many questions (especially about booleans)...

Very very nice models robo.... they look just like the real life counterparts... best model for me is the forklift...love the lego ideas....

morphious_ms: I dont use booleans either (my main modelling app are lw, xsi and hexagon) since they DO create bad geometry... But a friend showed me the powerbooleans plugin for max and i really would like to see that in any application i use... the booleans never crash (lw style) or create bad geometry since you can choose to continue the edges of the boolean all around the model... It really works great and i envy max users for it...

Matt, cheers for the comments. Now about the whole boolean thing, I do use power booleans in Max which from my knowledge is one of the best working boolean plugins out there at the moment. As I'm not all that familiar with Maya I can't really comment on methods of cleaning up booleans in there but I can offer some comments about what I do in Max.

Usually if the boolean occurs on a surface that is flat and that will always remain flat I tend to just let some of the bad geometry slide, although I do tend to try and clean it up a little bit. Thats the beauty of PowerBooleans though, is that it creates much better geometry than most standard boolean operations. There is even an option for it to re-quad (probly not the right term) the mesh after it had performed the operation so that it comes out nice and clean.

I often have to do a bit of extra cleaning up when booleans are done on curved surfaces...just to make sure that the surrounding poly's are shaped correctly.

Hope that helps in some way.

icedeyes, thanks muchly...

yeah...I don't use boolean either ( maya here )....as it "does" leave messy geometry...but it's not surprising considering that when ever a boolean is used ( well usually )....there are two compeletely different objects involved......and in most cases the verts/edges don't line up....so you get a bunch of strays....which in turn require clean up.....so I just model everything from scratch....it's better for me b/c I have total control of what goes where....no guess work....however I don't use Max, therefore that plugin (powerBoolean) might make the process easier, but robo3687 did say he still goes in and cleans the mesh up, so it's still a hit and miss kinda thing.....

oh by the way....great models robo3687 !!

Subject: 56 - M16
Time Taken: 4 Hours
Program Used: 3dsmax 8
Description: Now I've taken a similar sort of lean to the subject on this one as I did to the iPod model. I've modeled an M1 Garrand instead of an actual M16 as it is a much preferable weapon in my eyes, and it technically is a predecessor to the M16. So I hope that isn't stretching the rules too much but as I said its a similar train of thought to the iPod model.
