Here's a tutorial for users of Project Dogwaffle - on some of the key aspects of the Color Gradient found both in PD Particles, and PD Pro (oh and also PD Artist).
http://www.thebest3d.com/pdp/tutorials/colorgradient
The main difference with the gradient in Particles and that of PD Pro is that Pro can use the gradient with tools other than particle brushes. For example, with the fill tool, the linear or circular gradient too. And so there are also some more options there to control how the gradient fill into the shape or selection, such as top-down or left to right or shape-adjusted etc...
I've been creating tutorials of PD Particles lately but most of what's there can also be used with PD Pro 3 and some with Project Dogwaffle 2, and even the freeware v1.2
