Hello all. I'm planinng on using this thread for carious skethces that i'm working on rather than creating a new one for every sketch.
First project may indeed appear a bit crazy - it's a christmas drawing - in August
But, before you run away screaming, let me explain : I Have done a lot of daily sketches but hasn't really progressed to a stage where i'm spending more time on details. So in order to have some motivation I thought it might be nice to try and create a couple of christmas drawings that I can use as Christmas cards once that time comes around. However, for me not to be too embarassed about sending them out ot people that actually know who I am I will have to get up to a higher level of quality and detail than ehat i usually make.
So chances are this is going to be a pretty long and painstaking process with lots of mistakes and re-do's, but that's why i'm starting now in hope that i'll manage to learn something from this, and hopefully get some comments that can help me along the way.
Anyway - enough rambling - here's the first sketch, drawn in pencil and scanned afterward. I'm keeping it fairly simple with this decoration, but i still want to add sufficient detail - and i'm already starting to worry about the lighting.

I'm not sure if the green background is the best, but its better than white.
So the next four steps so far has been:

1. Blocking in colours for the root. Once the block colours are in and the drawing is balance i'll have to add some texture to this.
2. Classical red Christmas candle. Trying to use a gradient to give the impression of more light towards the flame.
3. Added some glow and a glass bauble in the decoration. I'm not sure if the blue on the bauble is overkill - it does stick out a bit just now... Also added some spruce in the background, which will ultimately be the "filler" in the decoration.
4. While not on the original sketch i decided to add a cone since the decoration seemed a bit too simplistic - I'm even less certain about the blue bauble now though.
So this is the beginning. Any comments, crits, or cry's of "for heavens sake stop immediately before you destroy the whole thing" will be most welcome.
