Hello all. I'm planinng on using this thread for carious skethces that i'm working on rather than creating a new one for every sketch.

First project may indeed appear a bit crazy - it's a christmas drawing - in August
But, before you run away screaming, let me explain : I Have done a lot of daily sketches but hasn't really progressed to a stage where i'm spending more time on details. So in order to have some motivation I thought it might be nice to try and create a couple of christmas drawings that I can use as Christmas cards once that time comes around. However, for me not to be too embarassed about sending them out ot people that actually know who I am I will have to get up to a higher level of quality and detail than ehat i usually make.
So chances are this is going to be a pretty long and painstaking process with lots of mistakes and re-do's, but that's why i'm starting now in hope that i'll manage to learn something from this, and hopefully get some comments that can help me along the way.

Anyway - enough rambling - here's the first sketch, drawn in pencil and scanned afterward. I'm keeping it fairly simple with this decoration, but i still want to add sufficient detail - and i'm already starting to worry about the lighting.

I'm not sure if the green background is the best, but its better than white.

So the next four steps so far has been:

http://overchord.net/blogcms/cggal/galleries/WIP/Christmas%20decoration/WIP2to5.jpg

1. Blocking in colours for the root. Once the block colours are in and the drawing is balance i'll have to add some texture to this.
2. Classical red Christmas candle. Trying to use a gradient to give the impression of more light towards the flame.
3. Added some glow and a glass bauble in the decoration. I'm not sure if the blue on the bauble is overkill - it does stick out a bit just now... Also added some spruce in the background, which will ultimately be the "filler" in the decoration.
4. While not on the original sketch i decided to add a cone since the decoration seemed a bit too simplistic - I'm even less certain about the blue bauble now though.

So this is the beginning. Any comments, crits, or cry's of "for heavens sake stop immediately before you destroy the whole thing" will be most welcome.

Well its not exactly what i was supposed to be doing, but today i jsut got sidetracket and worked on a cartoon of black beard. This was after learning that he apparently stuck lit cannon fuses in his hair to appear even more intimidating.

On the candle: I think you could mix in a bit of yellow to all base colours, so do they don't look too primary. Especially the blue that is sticking out. I'd also make the background darker and perhaps purple instead of green, so your leaves get some attention instead of blending in.

You can also use the red of the candle for ambient light, it will help you warm those branches. It can also enrich your glow effect.

Here's what I mean (with due apologies for the quick paintover. :])

Hi Ralph

Tank you very much for the comments, and yes I see what you mean - that's great advice. I'll try and get this updated - i can see how much it helps on the paintover. Thanks!

I follwed Ralphs suggestion of adding some yellow. I did this as an overall mixer right now by using soft light at 50% opacity. And also changed the background to a deepish purple (too primary??) as the green would conflict with the spruce eventually.

I'm not sure the colour of the root is that great, but note that i plan adding more light/shade on it once i start working on it in more detail.
For now I started on the cone adding a bit more detail.

I expect to go through the illustration and touch things up tp approximately that level of detail first, and then perhaps try and evaluate how things are coming together and if I need further detail than that.

But as usual - comment will be recieved gratefully :)

Oooh I'm afraid i'm sliding on this one again - but hey that's why I started so early :D

In the meantime I've been doing a few sketches/doodles shown below. I've also been doing a bit of colouring for another illustrator, but only as an exercise.

Illustration of "Queen Anne's Revenge" - the ship of Blackbeard, the infamous pirate. BBC was howing a documentary on him, and I had been doing some cartoon stuff before, so I made this one very quickly (about 30-40 minutes).

Just a very quick doodle for the DSG while I was stuck at work with no wacom.

Another daily sketch that I am going to try and get more detailed/sharpenend up in time for Halloween is this one:

I'm thinking of changing the foreground a bit and add the obligatory pumpkins :D and then start detailing the house a bit more. I'm reasonably happy with the background - don't know if the sky might need a bit of darkening or variation added.

Nice ones!

On the house piece: Yes, the sky could benefit from dark clouds, with light peeking through it. You might also want to make the fences using your dark shade of environment blue instead of black, as they look a bit detached right now.

Looking forward to see the finished painting. :)

Thanks Ralph, You're right about both sky and fences.
I was also thinking that the fence is actually a bit too small/low or perhaps enarlge it a bit to fit the perspective a bit better.

But thank you for comments - will post updates soon!

wow haven't posted in here in ages  Sorry - I've been away from the drawing while doing some additional work for a while.
I did get the time to do a couple of daily sketches recently, and the one below is the one i'm happiest with so far - but somehow I still feel something is missong/not quite right with it - not sure if its the ice in the background or if its the colouring of the seal itsef....
