THE HARDCORE MODELING MINI-CHALLENGE!
30 Days, 30 Models
Sculpt up to 30 models in 1 month from the provided list.

There are TWO ways to participate:
Either:

PICK AND CHOOSE:
You can pick whatever models you wish from the attached list at the end of this post
DAILY MODEL THREAD:
Wait for a Daily thread called thread called the DAILY MODEL and post on this thread the model selected for that day
BOTH threads will reference the SAME model list, the intention is to fomment modellers to finish the highest number of finished entries.

THE CHALLENGE:___________________________

Sculpt up to 30 models in 1 month from the provided list. The idea of this "mini-challenge" is to simulate an impossible dateline for a project. The artists will have at their discretion how detailed the models they will be working on, if the models will be shaded, and the interpretation of what they should be modeling.

For example an entry might call for a duck, but the artist might sculpt a realistic fully shaded duck or decide to model a more simple toy rubber duck. The key is that the model HAS to be based on some sort of real life reference.

Challenge Levels
The challenge is divided into three different sections to accomidate people who are busy and people who can't create a model a day. This is also a great idea because hopefully we will see, as more of these challenges are completed, different members progressing through to the Platinum level because they are becoming faster modelers.

Silver Challenge: This challenge only has 10 models that are required to be completed, giving competitiors 2 days per model.

Gold Challenge: This challenge has 20 models that are required to be completed, giving competitors 1 and a half days per model.

Platinum Challenge: This challenge has 30 models that are required to be completed, giving competitors 1 day per model.

CAN YOU DO IT?

What is the HARDCORE MODELING CHALLENGE?

The idea of these HARDCORE MINI CHALLENGES is to push the modeling skills participants while learning from the past. To get past preconceptions of the limits of digital art. To push digital artists into the world of sculptors & artisans. But we will have variety on these mini challenges. Sometimes we will sculpt a model based on a masterpiece, but on other times we might do Jet fighter or a landmark....

The only thing that will be consistent is the SHORT DATELINES.

At the end of the challenge, the participant should have a finished collection of entries. Keep in mind contest of high difficulty you will have ONE MONTH to do the challenge, but the rewards, even if you don't win, will be your improved skills in speed and accuracy.

EVALUATION CRITERIA:______________________

Detailed RESEARCH, and attention to detail are key for ALL entries. Please before doing an entry do your homework.

The best model will be selected by an open vote
for these categories:

Most Accurate Model (Collection)
Best Detailed Model (Collection)
Best Render (Collection)
Best Overall Collection
Most Accurate Model (Individual)
Best Detailed Model (Individual)
Best Render (Individual)
Highest Number of FINISHED models
The winner will get bragging rights and a small banner
designed by me.

YOU HAVE One MONTH do the challenge.

CHALLENGE SPECIFIC RULES:

No work taken DIRECTLY from an existing tutorial. You may use an existing tutorial only for reference.
You may NOT use a pre exiting models. All models must be done from scratch.
An artist may change from PICK AND CHOOSE type of participation to DAILY MODEL THREAD whenever he or she wishes.
GENERAL RULES:

For DAILY MODEL THREAD the model must have been done AFTER the topic has been announced.
for PICK AND CHOOSE the selected models must have been done AFTER the topic has been announced.

the following naming convention: HARDCORE MODELING!: 30Days_30Models: <<TYPE OF ENTRY >>
For each image you should post:

Title of Model Completed

[Model Images]

Comments:
And should be posted on both the individual WIP thread on on this master thread.

For each model 3 Orthographic renders ARE REQUIRED. These renders are for TOP, SIDE, BOTTOM views and a BEAUTY RENDER.

BEAUTY RENDER:

Final RENDERS should be rendered at 1600 X 1200 OR 1200 x 1600 in JPG format.(Post only as link) A smaller 800x 600 OR 600 x 800 image should be posted on the threads.

Sweet David dude, after seeing that I'm glad that wasn't the current challenge. That artist would have had it in the bag.

OK, so two questions:
Should we try and restrain ourselves to only polys and only nurbs, or is it OK to mix-n-match? Some modeling contests are kinda testy about that.

And... when does it start dude, I'm ready. I'd love to hit platinum.

This should be a great challenge... can't wait to see some peoples work! Just one quesiton:

for PICK AND CHOOSE the selected models must have been done AFTER the topic has been announced.

So are we now just waiting for you to announce the topic? (e.g Bladed Weapons)

Thanks,

ZaneV

You can start RIGHT NOW.... (As an PICK AND CHOOSE ENTRY)

You can switch back and forth between types of entries.
I will start posting DAILY MODEL TOPICS on Monday.

I don't mean to be nit picky here but under the "draft" version you said that the silver one was 15 models not 10 Roberto... did you lighten it for a reason? or was it just a typo?

By the way GREAT david Binder... it must have taken a while to finish (not to mention alot of hard work)

one more thing does the time limit also include lighting/rendering? or just modeling?

ok one more question and I will stop... are the deadlines definiite (like you have to post one model per day, or a model every day and a half, or a model every two days)?? or can it be that I have a couple days leeway otherwise I can't start on this...

because I'm trying to finish up my demo reel and I don't have time to start right this second I was hoping to start in a day or two to give me time to finish my demo reel (it shouldn't take me too long to finish it)

Silver Challenge: This challenge only has 10 models that are required to be completed, giving competitiors 2 days per model.

Looks like you changed the number of models but forgot the days. 30/10=3

08-20-2006, 10:32 AM
Does one have to model the models at 1 model per day basis, OR os it possible to maybe do the whole week worth of stuff on the weekend? Because there may be some days when you just can't make it to the computer.

ZaneV
08-20-2006, 10:46 AM
Models don't have to be completed on a day to day basis (1 model per day) but if you are thinking about modeling a few models in one day there are a few things you should remember that the models you produce must have resonably good and competitive quality to get a vote. This is also why the silver, gold and platinum challenges are in place...

(Could you please conferm this roberto)

Anyway, good luck to all the people that are competing. I am looking forward to seeing your work!

This sounds/looks like its going to be very challenging.. great idea!

Just wondering if the models have to be textured too.. I may join this if time permits. Oh, and are the models to be high or low poly??

ZaneV
08-20-2006, 01:06 PM
Models don't have to be textured for this challenge and I think it has been like that for all the other challenges. As for high or low poly, I don't think it really matters. Please correct me if I am wrong Roberto.

I also noticed that some of the models are things like nails, tacks and screws.. paintbrush and so on...

So.. one of these would be counted as one model for that day?? or would do as one of your 10, 20 or 30 models??

Thanks

ZaneV
08-20-2006, 01:58 PM
can i show all my models in one picture or do i have to have for example 30 diffrent pictures?

I don't think that would really work... The rules say you need 3 orthographic renders of each model and 1 beauty render so.... if my calculations are correct, then:

-you would have 120 models in one picture if you were doing 30 models
-you would have 80 models in one picture if you were doing 20 models
-you would have 40 models in one picture if you were doing 10 models

I also noticed that some of the models are things like nails, tacks and screws.. paintbrush and so on...

So.. one of these would be counted as one model for that day?? or would do as one of your 10, 20 or 30 models??

These items may seem a bit simple and easy but for people new to modeling, these could pose a bit of a challenge. By having these items in the challenge it opens it up to beginners. It is up to you to choose items that you think will challenge you.

Yes, you can go and model these items as your 10, 20 or 30 models but what would the challenge be in that?

ZaneV

P.S I know I am probabley answering questions that Roberto should be answering, if there is a problem with that please let me know.... this challenge is so exciting! :bounce::scream:

When creating the thread, you have to specify Silver, Gold or Platinum... if you specify, say, Silver, but end up doing enough to qualify for Gold or Platinum, should you then change the title, or will the number of entries determine the level?

Dang, I'm super busy already right now, but I would really liek to participate. It seems like a great learning experience.

Questions: (hopefully not too stupid...)

The key is that the model HAS to be based on some sort of real life reference.

So this means we should be aiming for real, or can we make it stylized? Most of the time when I work I use reference for everything, but then make the model my own artictic interpretation of that referenced reality. Is this okay for this challenge?

For each model 3 Orthographic renders ARE REQUIRED.

Do you actually mean "orthographic", as in no perspective at all? Or do you just want to see the front, back, and side, but this can be done with a correctly positioned perspective camera? (From the front, back, and side... just using a camera with depth perspective, something that is not in traditional orthographic views)

After we post a model and get crit on it, can we go back and change it?

Thanks!

This (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y224/reflectingabyss/Maya/xactobig.jpg) is the final piece, i think.

Also, Moonlit Matt has a point... are the side/front/back views supposed to be dead on- straight from the camera... or can they have some kind of angle/tilt to them?

are we required to post an image of each of our models as we finish them in this thread?

or do we post them when all our models are done and therefore 'final'?

All you guys asking about clarifications of the rules, don't get so anal about it, it doesn't really matter. It's not as if there's any big prize at stake or anything, it's really just a learning experiecne for yourself, no one will be disqualified for renderig a side shot in persepctive view instead of ortho.
THe 'rules' are quite relaxed.

The idea is to aim to be a realistic as possible. But of course there is some leeway in this.
If you want to make stylized versions of the models, go ahead, as long as they look right.

Usually on ortho renderings the images are posted with no perpective.

And yes, you can change a model after you post it. The real dateline is the end of the challenge.

I have a suggestion about a category you could include to the list.

Plants.

I've noticed alot of the items aren't organic and I haven't seen someone do an organic item yet. Why not add plants like trees, flowers, or desk plants like Ficas... I want to do a plant like that but it isn't on the list. Most of the organic items are way too hard for me to do like Hippos and Dolphins. But I can do a plant in a fair amount of time.

So what do you think Roberto?

I agree with Noggy:thumbsup: .. This is a challenge to "beat a deadline".. which is alot of the time for companies/studios that deal with 3D.. and alot of things are on the list.. I know:) .. but plants would be a good addition.. and I know we can't keep adding things to the list, but this last entry could seal that!?!

ok, so where is the daily model listed? I understand we can choose from the list. But where is the topic Robert chooses each day?

I have a suggestion about a category you could include to the list.

Plants.

I've noticed alot of the items aren't organic and I haven't seen someone do an organic item yet. Why not add plants like trees, flowers, or desk plants like Ficas... I want to do a plant like that but it isn't on the list. Most of the organic items are way too hard for me to do like Hippos and Dolphins. But I can do a plant in a fair amount of time.

So what do you think Roberto?

Give me 10 organic things, and Ill add them tonight.

since your still adding to the list i wanted to add a few more ideas to the list of organic models. i was thinking of parts of the head. like the nose, eyes, ears, lips, hand, feet. you can also do certain gestures of the hand, feet, lips etc.

you can find some nice reference at Philippe Faraut's website:

1.Ficus/House plants
2.Rose
3.Dandelion
4.Seaweed (goes with aquatic category)
5.Oak/Maple tree
6.Venus Flytrap

....hey Roberto, I know you're a busy guy, but I'm still waiting for a response to my question....allow me to explain....I've found a few things around my apt that would be great to model b/c I can actually hold, measure, and see every lil detail about them ( nail clipper, flip- flops, toothBrush, vacuumCleaner etc ) I mean there's still over 25days left for the challenge....I can compose a list.....others might be interested......whaddu ya say? :deal:

I like that idea too. A sharpie I can hold and measure is alot easier than lets say a hippo. This will help a lot of unexperienced people to do more tangable objects and therefor more models.

I know this would help me out.

I dont know if you are really going to go through with adding more objects... but if you are,
here are a few more ideas.

guitar
trumpet
sax

Ok guys personally... I think that if its not on the list... it won't be, or shouldn't be... I mean I understand Binder's proposal and I think that those could be for a future challenge, but as for this current challenge I think the list is THE list, because otherwise everyone doing the challenge could be like "Oh can I do a Q-tip, Salt Shaker, Printer, DVD, etc." see where I'm going with this... I mean being able to research this is part of the challenge not just the modeling... Honestly I've seen some pretty good models with just using web references...

I mean it's only fair... because the technology list didn't get in (though robo3678 wanted to do them)....

but that's just me.

But I do have a related question... I want to do a model of a B-17 (personal reasons)... and was wondering if I could do one for this challenege... It is like a B-52 except a smaller version of it... I can do either... I have orthos of each... I was just wondering if I could... (this isn't a major deviation from the list just a slight one since it is still a bomber plane)... either way I am going to do the B-17 I was just wondering if I would be able to use it for the competition... Thanks (PS if you are wondering what it looks like go HERE (http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m28/morphius_ms/30_models_30_days/b-17cutaway.jpg))

Hello, I'm relitavely new to cg talk (well i've been registered a while but never used it)

I'm wondering if i can start this tomorrow seem as i'm going to do the silver challenge and i'll only going to have to do 10 models (is this right?)

And also i was wondering if you make your own thread to put all your entrys in?

I'm going to be doing quite simple topics because on a maximum i'll get 4 or 5 hours a day if that. Also i've only been doing 3d modelling for half a year so i'm still quite new to it.

I'm only 13 so i still have school to go to and lots of homework to do so thats going to take some time up.

Thanks CU44:thumbsup:

silver is 10 models (that is correct)

and you do have to start your own thread

13 is a good age to get started in things like this....i for example started working in 3d at 11 (with a program called Extreme 3D...very basic by any standard today) then shifted up to a program I can't quite think of the name of 2 years later.

Then when I was 14 I got access to Max through school and have been a user for the last 5 years. I think with something like this you have to start young so you have plenty of time to build up the skills to get yourself a job after school.

I've been stuck home all year sick/recovering so I have had alot of time to polish up my skills.
