Right now I am busy with a set of wall hangings for my friend's wedding gift. They will be printed 12" by 16" and framed. These have to be near perfect so that in years to come I don't wince everytime I visit my friends... heheh. Your crits and comments are very much appreciated.

For this one, I'm not sure about the neck muscles and I couldn't find any references on it.
Do they look wrong to you?

How about the right ear on this guy? Any suggestions?
Hope to hear from you

Thanks for the comment and the ref. I am working on the white horse with the help of the ref right now.
I have worked more on the brown horse, I think it is almost done, unless any one has some crits yet.
Any suggestions?
thanks for any help you can give me,

Looking pretty good. You have done a great job on the eyes. They're very expressive. What I'm noticing about the heads is that they seem rather coarse and lacking in skeletal structure. If your friend is a horseperson, she may notice a few flaws. I've been painting horses for 20 years, let me know if you'd like a bit of a paintover to show you the areas I'd work on.

Nice start!

A couple of crits:
I'd suggest revisiting the horses' ears. If you think about it, your horses' ears would not be able to swivel around forward and back like they should because you have them attached too close. If you take a look at the sample links, you can see how the ears actually have more separation from the head so they can positioned in a variety of angles.

It looks like you've made the eye a bit big for the dark brown horse, and the cheek needs a bit of repositioning. Take a look at the below reference for comparison.

And here's another reference for your light brown/sorrel horse as far as the head and neck positioning.

Thanks so much for the very helpful crits!
Batbrat- a paint over would be very appreciated and used! (and yes, my friend is a horseperson.)
tatiana- wow, thanks for all of the refs. They have been put to use.
As for the update: I put in some swivel ears, scaled the eye down, boxed up the jaw bone and fixed some problems with the neck. I just sketched in these changes for now, let me know if the anatomy is looking alright now.
Thanks so much!

The main area I'd work on would be the general shape of the skull and overlying tissue. I think you've done a nice job with the eyes and expression. Not sure what kind of horses your friend is into, but as with dogs, fanciers of each breed of horse prefer specific head shapes and facial characteristics. I'll just assume your horses are meant to be good quality generic or grade.

In my paintover, I've slightly exaggerated the "dryness" of the head, so you can better see where bones of the skull protrude, the muscles, etc.

The jaw should be prominent. Think frisbee. This is considered good conformation on virtually all breeds of horse. The neck, especially the throatlatch, should be clean and trim to allow the horse to flex, but still breathe. Muzzles vary widely, and horses display a great deal of expression through their muzzle. But there is a tendency to lean toward a smaller, trimmer muzzle for most horse people. Here's my paintover if you'd like to use it as a rough guide. Hope it helps.

Sorry for being so late with the reply... I have been very busy this week.
Thank-you so much for the paintover... apparently I wasn't quite done yet...
I also should mention that I do intend on leaving the horses with wider muzzles.
I am also wondering if I have the eyelashes right. Should they be sweeping forward instead of back?
The paintover really helped me to see the bone structure, hopefully I have it down now, but If there are still some errors you see, PLEASE TELL ME!
Thanks,
Jackie.

They're looking good. Nice job on the eyes, the eyelashes are correct. Even if you're leaving the wider muzzles, I think the nasal bone on both horses is a bit wide. They should taper toward the nose a bit more. Also, the throatlatch area of the dark horse's neck is too thick.

Your friend is getting a lovely gift.

Thanks again for the useful crits.
okay. The wedding is on Saturday the 16th.... thats this week!
I think that they are nearly finished now, but if there are still some obvious mistakes I'm willing to stay up all night every night this week to get the job done right.
I think I have come a long way from the beginning and want to finish them to the very best I can do.
So, here they are, looking forward to hearing your thoughts.
thanks alot everyone for all the wonderful help.
-Jackie.
