View Full Version : Sketchbook Thread of Vilhelmina Ullemar Lönnbom
Vilhelmina 08-19-2006, 10:31 AM Having one of these threads seemed like fun (and a convenient way to keep track of what progress I actually make), so I decided to create one for myself. :) While I have very little formal training when it comes to art (next to none, actually), I have spent a great deal of my spare time the past three years trying to teach myself how to draw 'properly'. At the moment, though, I feel sort of stuck, which is one of the things that led me here in the first place. I know I have a lot to learn, and I will learn! ;) You are hereby invited to watch. ^^
____
Originally I was going to make something new to celebrate the opening of the thread, but in the end other things got in the way and I didn't feel like delaying the creation of this anymore. Thus, here's something a little bit older, but still not too old to be considered somewhat recent:

^ Done in ballpoint pen, because that was what I had with me. From imagination.
There will be more things later on, but for now, this is it. ^^ Enjoy!

I did some things I thought I'd post up here. :) Both were digitally painted, using openCanvas 4.06 Plus.
First, a study of my own hand, from life:
http://www.cassisconnection.com/cgtalk/handstudie.jpg
(My fingernails are actually painted that colour currently, in case anyone should wonder. ;) )
While I was at it, I jumped on the 50 heads in a month challenge.
First out is #84. Reference is here: http://anatomy.cgnetworks.com/00_Anatomy%20Lesson%20Series/Web%20Gallery%20of%20Art%20Images/084.jpg

Rebecca,
Thanks for the welcome and the links! I'll make sure to stay tuned to whatever turns up in the first thread. ^^ As for the poll, though, I have in fact already voted on it. I'm looking forward to the opening of the workshop!
And as for more of my work... Well, in fact, there's another update coming right here. I've been quite productive today (doing master copies is more inspiring than I thought it would be, actually!).
Take care!
Vilhelmina

Updates:
Second head of fifty for the fifty heads challenge; number 27. Reference: http://anatomy.cgnetworks.com/00_Anatomy%20Lesson%20Series/Web%20Gallery%20of%20Art%20Images/027.jpg

(<_<; It turned out a tad big... Sorry about that.)
Third head of fifty for the fifty heads challenge; number 73. Reference: http://anatomy.cgnetworks.com/00_Anatomy%20Lesson%20Series/Web%20Gallery%20of%20Art%20Images/073.jpg

(Somewhat messier than the other two, and she mysteriously changed the tilting of her head a bit... Still, it was good practice!)

Elsie: Hey there, thanks for coming by! ^^ Heh, these threads are kind of addictive once you've gotten them started, aren't they? I can't seem to stop updating mine. Is probably a good thing though. :D And you're most welcome to come back as often as you like. ^^
Talaria: Thank you! :) I will.

I continued on the fifty heads thing. Hopefully I'm learning something from this, we'll see. ;)
First one for today: #01

Second; #07

(x_x; Wrong angle again, like with one from yesterday... Except in this case, it bugs me much more! I -think- I might know where I went wrong, though, but I can't be bothered to go back and fix it.)
Third for today; #47!

(Definitely my favourite out of these three. :) )
I might post something else later, but we'll see about that. Have a nice day, everyone!

Vilhelmina,
that's some great stuff indeed :) I gotta say that I especially like the second one (judith beheading Holofernes)
and I wondered ... about how how long it took you ? :)
Vilhelmina

Putricious, thanks for stopping by! ^^ It's nice to hear you like what I've done here.
As for the time, though, I'm terribly bad at timing myself (for one, I never remember to, and even if I should I always take tiny breaks all the time and it's such a bother keeping track of them xD; ), but a guess for that particular one... Hm, between one and two hours, probably closer to one judging from the amount of pictures I drew that day. ^^

Didn't post anything new yesterday (though I could have - there were pictures!), so I'm getting around to it now instead. After this, though, I'll most likely take a break from the 50 heads thing, and instead focus on OFDW 19. The next update you see here will probably be related to that. ^^ Anyway;
My seventh out of fifty heads; #75
(Ref @ link (http://anatomy.cgnetworks.com/00_Anatomy%20Lesson%20Series/Web%20Gallery%20of%20Art%20Images/075.jpg))

Next was #03. Ref here (http://anatomy.cgnetworks.com/00_Anatomy%20Lesson%20Series/Web%20Gallery%20of%20Art%20Images/003.jpg).

And now for something completely different! :D My mind decided it desperately needed a break from the master copying, so I took one, and then instead this other picture jumped right at me. Or, more like right out of my pen and onto the screen, I guess. I had no references for this, for a change, save once when I looked for inspiration for the kind of dress I wanted her to wear on a site with pictures of historical costumes. Thus, anything not related to the dress is all from my imagination. o_O I believe I may actually have improved lately... If only a little. Some areas are unfinished, though, particularly her arms and shoulders. And the hands. Don't even mention the hands.

Time to go back to the OFDW 19 concept sketching! :D
Hi Vilhelmina!
The head studies from ref are lookin real good! As concerns paintings from imagination... I am guilty of doodling from imagination and I must say while it is fun the real learning process is in the ref'ed studies, at least for me.
But you just keep going.
watching this from now on...:D

I second that ;)
but for the girl in the dress there's just a little thing that bugs me a bit
it might be just an false impression but it seems like the mouth/chin is a slight bit off (to the right) from the rest of the face. Apart from that and what you said, it's really good  !!

Mu: Hello there! Yes, I definitely agree with you there. The girl in the dress was more of an evaluation painting than anything else. :) Evaluation of what I'd learned, that is. Thank you for coming by, and great to hear you'll be watching! :D
Talaria: Thank you! I love painting digitally, so much easier to change things that way. ^^
Putricious: You're absolutely right. I see it too. It's especially evident when the piece is flipped. However, as that picture was a 'just for fun' thing, I didn't really bother checking a lot while I was working on it (my bad) and now I can't be bothered to change anything anymore... It's growing old. ;) And thanks! :D

Hi....Vilhelmina ...:)
Just stopping by to say hello.....am liking your head studies...maybe a little more darker darks
contrast...will really add to the drama....maybe start with a purple that is almost black, for your background...then work your way into the light...just a thought...:)
Great to see you working from imagination, practicing what you have learned from the masters.
Imagination is like a muscle....if you don't use it, you lose it...:scream:
Enjoyed looking through your thread...looking forward to seeing your progress...
TAKE CARE
