Im looking to get a new PC but I am a little confused about which is better for intel based machines. Should I be looking at Dual core Pentiums or HT for the best performance?

Hyperthreading is dead technology only for the old P4 line. Look for multicore boxes.

Beaker is right. The Dual Core boxes will give you way more bang for the buck.

and forget about the P4D line of procs ... your money is better spent on a Core2 or AM2 machine.
