View Full Version : creatures and schtuff
Hello All. Well, this is my first time posting actual 3d work on cgtalk despite the fact that
i've been a member for a long time. Here are a bunch of work in progress images
I've done in Mudbox.
First set is a post-apocalyptic character. I've attached images that show the progression
from its rough stage to near final (still need to finish him).
|
|
Here is a bat creature I was playing around with.
and lastly (for tonight), another work-in-progress monster i did a while ago that i hope
to finish sometime in the future.

Great work so far Gio, The first character has a brilliant style and the forms are very organic and natural.
The last alien python works very well too,
Look forward to seeing more work from you!.

excellent sculpts gio. love the range of your skill from monsters to the beautiful sculpted man. speaking of the man, that left hand is genius.
great to see someone skipping the fluff and sculpting each level of detail before proceeding to the next. to many jump to the pores before they've properly rendered their forms. its clear you have a sculpting background and a firm grounding in the context of your craft. can't wait to see more. mudboxers represent! (i know its not the tool but the man, but i love to see all the talent using MB).
keep em coming.
hey marco! nice to see a familiar face here...hehehe. thanks dude! :)
thanks vitala. much appreciated!
phreak: mb represent, represent. :)
i try to sculpt more than do digital when i'm at home, but
its just so hard since mudbox is so damn addictive to use. anyway, thanks
for the kind words.
attached are two more mud models.

At the risk of sounding like a N00b, what is Mudbox? Is it a part of zbrush?
These models are amazing; I'm entranced by the sense of humanity that you gave the elephant-man-like creature with the deformed head.
thanks,

Matt: thanks man! much appreciated dude :)
Geoff: I'm glad you think so. Thats a big compliment for me since giving a sense
of humanity to my models is what I really strive for. Thanks!
Peter: Hey! You look familiar :) thanks dude. yet another place for me
to impose my images to people...hehehe.
Here are more anatomy focused models...

this is amazing stuff. great reference material for muscles and heads too. please post more.

beautiful stuff gio!
this post's continued obscurity is a sad indication of the state of things in much of the online cg community. if you'd only splattered wrinkles, horns, some more breasts, a pointy elf ear or two and name dropped like crazy, you'd be getting a ton more responses (maybe you could put a chainmail bra on the girl and give her a +2 sword of bloodletting?). praise for subtle confident control, skill and craft is set aside in favor of crass gimmicks and fanboy-ism. this is not to say all heralded works on this forum are crap (talented exceptions who get much deserved praise include the ripper, pixopath, stuzzi, jonas, KWAK, syomka, and neversong among many others...) just that philistine tastes and bandwagon fandom to often prevail.
keep posting. sorry to rant.
I never really have time to venture beyond the third page of most threads, so thank you Phreaknasty for bumping this back up and giving us newer members a chance to see this great work.
I'm off to visit Gio's website.

This work is really great. and it is ace to see work that just isnt orc and stuff like phreaknasty said. even tho it seem that is all i am doing recently:D . your structure is ace, the volume of the characters, just amazing, if you have had a traditional background, it shows.
I got my own little sculpting thread on the go at the mo, but yours is dicking on mine haha. i gotta get my hands on mudbox and have a go. even tho i love zbrush  .
it is sad that little threads like this get lost, only just found it my self. now if you had a star rating the cgtalkers would come flooding in  so for that u get a star *** make that three,
would be cool to see some textured.
keep up the good work. now i check out your site. :scream:

Amazing work :applause:. I am looking forward to see the post-apocalyptic character finished - most expressive face I've seen for a while. Watching art like this is food for the eyes.
wow, i was not expecting this thread to re-surface. thanks for bumping it up phreak.
also, thanks for the "rant". it is fully appreciated man :)
well, i should take advantage of this thread's current situation before it gets buried deep
within once again. here are some very very sketchy models i've been working on. i'd love
to focus on much more finished models as opposed to the WIPs you guys have been seeing
in this thread. hopefully when i replace my archaic machine (it served me well to a certain
point), i'll have much more interest in really tricking these studies out...or even texturing and
lighting them. but, one thing i'm thankful for having a slow computer for all this mudbox
work is that it forces me to really focus on forms rather than superfluous detail, which
is really whats least important.
first up is a witch model i did for halloween...
another model i worked on a while ago...
he's supposed to be a villain in conan the barbarian lore called toth amon. this is my very loose interpretation of the character. just having fun with it :)
and lastly, a ghoul-ish critter...

Your Knowledge of anatomy is incredible. You definately are a good candidate for selling the Mudbox software.
THank you for inspiring me, I really needed that.
Can't wait to see what else you create.

talented exceptions who get much deserved praise include the ripper, pixopath, stuzzi, jonas, KWAK, syomka, and neversong among many others...
It seems you and i have some taste in common, you basically wrote down a list of the few digital artists i kept following during these years.
@Giovanni: it's really nice to see your images here, i've been inspired by your work back in the times when your website was just a serie of images links on a blank page, i still remember a sculpture you did for an internal ILM challenge (if i'm not wrong) years ago. These Mudbox works look really good too, keep them coming.

wonderful creatures ....... so detailed ........ so frightful
keep it up .....
thanks for the replies!
inkyspot: with regards to anatomy, thanks! its something that is really imprtant to me. still have a lifetime of information to learn...so much to learn. hehehe. and hey, i'm glad to have "inspired" you somehow. its always great to know that my pieces can do that :) thanks
for letting me know that!
learner88: i don't really have the means to render or texture my models right now since i don't have modo, maya, or max. i plan on buying a copy of modo once i get a new computer. the stuff that jacquesd is doing with the renderer is really mindblowing. i hope to produce images with the same feel for realisim as his. i'm kinda itching to see my creatures in some form of environment and composition rather than just rough screengrabed images :)
thirdeye: i kinda miss that old website of mine. it was so easy to update! the way i have my current site setup, each update takes me a long time to do. i think i might revert to something much simpler. thank you for the kind words man :)
metamesh: thanks man! yup, i'm really into updating this thread now that phreaknasty bumped it up. i totally forgot about it prior to that. i hope to also update this with sculptures and such. i have to read the rules, but there are not any rules against posting clay sculptures in a 3D WIP thread right?
makman123: thank you! :)

thanks for posting these dude its work like this that pushes us all forward and keeps us getting out of bed an hour earlyer to try and catch up heheh
Akira: thanks! just a little correction though, i have not had the chance to use modo yet.
these models were all created using silo for base mesh construction and mudbox for
detail and sculptural lovin'.
todd: nice to see you here! i passed the greets to kelvin and he asked me to tell you this:
"she's not my mother todd". i'd probably have to say that with a whiny edward furlong-esque voice since its a line from T2. i guess its an inside joke thing? hehehe.
SPIDER: crikey!! someone from the art center. man, given the chance, i'd love to
go back to school and face some art bootcamp there at the art center. most of the badass artists i know or know of are art center grads. what a nice thing to say about my work though. thanks man! its much appreciated.

Great thread! Your characters have real weight and definition, everything about them makes sense. On your website you have a number of clay sculpts, did you start off as a traditional sculptor and then move into CG? Or has it always been side by side, so to speak?

piek: i've been sculpting for about four or so years, give or take. i got the sculpting bug
after starting work where i currently am employed. makes me wish that i had taken interest
waaaaay sooner that way i'd be a lot closer to becoming the artist i aspire to be. theres a lifetimes worth of knowledge to be learned when it comes to sculpting, so better late than never i guess.
playing and experimenting around with abstract shapes and form. i think time i work on it, i'll tweak it so its a lot less humanoid in proportion.

Duranium: thank you. since i only get to do personal works after work hours, i only
get to work on them for about 2 to 3 hours. some take more nights to finish (like

Whoa, great work, gio!
Do you sculpt these models out of the default sphere in mbox
or do you create a low-res base mesh in another app?
Always cool to see you updating this thread.
Keep it up!
so so awesome!!
I like direction that you are taking this guy, its refreshing to see a new take on a character that has developed such a predefined look.
i might add that the subject matter and execution that you have chosen for all your sculpts in this thread and on your website, are inspriational, especially the mutant girl. you know when you see something like that the you know your dealing with a person that hasn't learned it straight out of book but is born with innate gift.
A question about sculpting in general, specifically anatomy.
When roughing up and shaping the torso what key points do you look for?
is their a process and certain way to you go about sculpting this area?
such as the height of the pecks in relation to the rib cage and the 6 pack, or is more about shape and form and what looks good, thus taking a more artistic approach, however not neglecting the rules of anatomy.
sorry for the all the questions, and im looking forward to see more reat sculpts from you!

thanks frameless. to answer your question, i start off by blocking a really simplified
box model in silo before subdividing it in mudbox for sculpt work.
CAD: thanks for the kind words. as for sculpting, whenever i rough in, say, the torso
for example, i always look for the big masses first. i usually always start off with
as simple shapes as i possibly can, and then from there i go down the heirarchy of forms
to add/carve sub-forms. when i start adding or carving in forms, i always make sure
to never lose the importance and visibility of the main primary forms, like the ribs. it
is very important to get a sense of a rib mass underneath the creature, no matter
how detailed or muscular it is. other key areas i try to define early on is the pelvic
mass. i always need to know how the upper body rests on top of the pelvic bone.
if the character is heavy, there will obviously be more compression and gravity
to the body as the belly and obliques rests and presses on the pelvis...this for me
is important because it helps define the overall silhouette of the creature.
its 1:30 am...im terribly sleepy so i hope what i said made a lick of sense. if not, please
let me know and ill try to expand on it some more.
thanks!
updated the monster. its getting a very carlos huante-ish vibe since, well, i am a big fan of his works :)

Hi Gio, I can't believe I never saw this thread before, a coworker had to show it me today. I just had to jump in and say how much I'm loving your MB sculpts! I've always been inspired by your work (Rust and Logan, way back when 3dluvr was the place to be) and am glad to see you posting regularly. There is something very refreshing about unfinished studies, so much Life to them. Like looking at some of Rodin's quick clay sketches. I'll definitely be checking back here on a regular basis!

I feel the same way about zbrush, I've got to download the trial of mudbox and give it a spin... it just feels like there is no time to try everything! :)
Toronto is very hot and muggy, ugh damn smog! The industry is pretty much the same, lots of commercials, one or two tv series and the occasional film going on... I'm thinking of leaving soon to try my hat elsewhere.
I did hear that you were from TO, I think you went to school with some guys I've worked with, small world :)
Your latest sculpt is great, nothing else to say about it, just great! :)
Do you have any plans to create something more finished or continue with short studies?

hehh... mudbox... the only program ive seen that rivals zbrush3.1's sculpting abilitys. your models make me want to learn mudbox. in your preference, do you think its more efficient for you to model using mudbox rather then using maya and zbrush to model? its really cool that you can do so much in mudbox. im scared to leave zbrush.. its so good

hey dear gio
you are one of my inspirations............
what is your new workstation specific?
rasmusW: thanks man. been so busy with stuff that i have not had much time to update this thread. had to fish it out of the very depths of this forum hehhe.
mind: hey man...great to see you here. im glad you liked my gnomon presentation. i had tremendous fun being there and meeting all the different folks. its nice to hear that you seemed to have taken something out of my presentation. thanks man!
knojo: i like to model my base meshes in silo before i bring them into mudbox...this is just so i can control my topology and the flow of how my detail behaves on the mesh. this keeps me having to subdivide less, which is always a good thing since i am not a fan of super high resolution meshes. in my opinion, i like modeling in mudbox better because its in the same wavelength of my workflow. i like things that are familiar, simple and easy to use, just like a kemper tool when sculpting with clay. zbrush is an awesome software and has the ability to do so much more than mudbox in terms of posing, etc, but i tend to just go for straight-up no frills sculpting, which mudbox excells in.
in my opinion, you should never be scared to leave any software. as much as i love mudbox, i try never to pledge allegiance to software. if zbrush suddenly has something that i find will benefit me, i wont even think twice about incorporating it in my workflow...that or any other software for that matter.
3mm: thanks man :)

Hey, no problem. :) Glad they are of use. Great presentation, it was nice to see how you broke your modeling process down. Great to see how much work you do in your spare time - in checking out your site, I noticed you linked to Sabin Howard, who is hugely inspirational.

At the time, I didn't realize he was gearing up for his Gnomon presentation, lol. It was quite cool to see that piece featured in the Gnomon Live presentation. It would be amazing to have you participate too.
hello rebeccak. i am glad you thought my presentation went well. i thought i lacked focus in a lot of areas. i promised myself that the next time i do a presentation, i will drink a pitcher of coffee to perk myself up. heheh
sabin howard's work has been such an inspiration for my own work. i try to emulate the feel of his figures in my traditional clay studies. there are just so much to study in terms of strong form and structure. another favorite of mine is david simon and of course, richard macdonald.
there are not much modern figurative sculptors nowadays that i know of (perhaps i am not looking hard enough). oh, another one whose works i LOVE is stanislav szukalski...magnificent sculptor he is :)
sure, i would love to join in on the next 3d workshop. ill check often to see what the new topic will be.

Thanks for the name stanislav szukalski - had never heard of him, but his work is really cool. Tragic that his life's work should have been destroyed. In terms of modern sculptors, there's also of course Ron Mueck (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_Mueck), with whom I'm sure you're familiar. The other artist whose work I really love is Manuel Neri (http://images.google.com/images?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=&q=%22Manuel+Neri+%22&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi), his work is more abstract, but in terms of pure expression, I really like his work. In some of your fast sculpts, it seems you're striving after the same sort of exploration, which is cool - I tend to like form for form's sake, and it's neat to see that being explored with digital tools.
sure, i would love to join in on the next 3d workshop. ill check often to see what the new topic will be.
Sounds great! - it's good to know my pimping worked. ;)
Cheers,

yup. it was quite unnerving up there. especially after mudbox crashed on me. i had such a blast though. i met a lot of people and thats always fun.

Woo, awesomeness. :) You know, these 3D models make great study models for 2D artists, both traditional and digital. At some point in the future, would you consider giving permission for other artists to work from your 3D work in a 2D medium in some type of Workshop format? You would of course receive credit - just a thought. You can become a render donor. :)
Edit: collings, you're welcome!
collings: thanks man! yeah, those 3 levels of forms are pretty darn useful. i apply them to everything, not just organics. they're also applicable to hardsurface robotic/spaceship stuff.

"What will be your future plans?
Besisdes hitting it big and eventually buying out ILM and Pixar, I plan to focus more on developing my style and experimenting with the medium as I try out new and different things with it. I also want to expand my knowledge and learn other fantastic software packages such as Maya, Lightwave, and Softimage. hehe, nice shapes there Gio, how do u find zb3 compared to mudbox?
metamesh: i like the feel of mudbox's sculpting tools more when it comes to the important aspects such as creation of solid form. i do like zbrush's detailing tools though such as the rake, etc. it can obviously handle a hell of a lot more polies than mudbox, so its great. transpose also rocks.

You've actually got quite a bunch of potential customers here ;)
aumakua: thanks! i hope so :)
here is a paintover i did of an orc/troll creature i modeled last year. its heavily inspired by jordu schell's works. modeled in mudbox and painted in zb3 and tweaked in pshop.

Awesome, gio!
Isn't this the critter you did for the Gnomon Workshop? Great to see some color on him!

maph: yup, that be him. as for the dvd, its should come out sometime soon. i'm currently working on it still.
cgmatek: thank you!
hypnotik: thank you!
flying hawk: i would love to give this guy the whole render treatment with spec maps, sub surface, etc. i was hoping to give him more wetness in certain parts of his face, but one is fairly limited with what can be done with the whole zbrush/pshop method. i'd love to put him through modo's renderer.
grasseti: thanks for the kind words man. much appreciated!
mindrot: thank you. he was a fun build. i've always wanted to do my own take on the frankenstein monster.
andreja: thanks!
oliveira: thank you!

wow amazing stuff
thanks :)
ienrdna: the renders are roughly taking about 3 to 4 mins. im sure i can lower it with more time spent in optimizing my settings.
here's another one for tonight. i tried using normal maps on a lorez mesh. there are some artifacts, which i am not happy with.
