Talaria,
Welcome aboard! :) It's great to see your pursuit of Master Copies, that's always a welcome sight around here. Would love to hear something about your art training and background, and how you came to find the Anatomy Forum.
Looking forward to seeing more of your work! :)

Hi, Talaria!
Seems like your sketchbook thread is off to a great (and quite productive) start! ^^ For some reason that sea snake really caught my eye - it looks quite fierce. o_O
In any case, I'm subscribing to this, so I'll be back! ;) Keep posting!

Rebeccak, thanks :D .
Well I live in South America and I just finished High school and I'm entering the University on September ( I'm not going to study art though, I'm going to study chemical eingeneering (spelling?) )
And for art training, I never had any D: I'm self taught all I know is for looking at this type of sites. I started drawing only anime/manga ( I was a crazy Naruto fan o_O btw)and over a year ago my aunt gave as a gift a book of Portraits (It had the evolution of the portrait and lots of paintings done by the famous artists) and I said to myself 'I want to do that!' So here I am trying :). As for digital art, well I never had any art class so buying oils will be kind of like a waste of money :/ because I don't know how to paint with them, I could learn by myself of course, but I think it will be better with a teacher :) (yes, I do plan on taking art classes in the future) Digital art is very hard too, but let's say it's less messy ;)
I came to the anatomy forum because for me anatomy it's the most important thing to learn, It's the base of every drawing (unless there are no humans or creatures in it).
Once again thanks for the welcome :)
Vilhelmina, I'm happy that you liked my sea serpent, I used the 'knowledge' learned in the copy of horses sketches from da Vinci to do its fierce face. Thanks for subscribing :D.
SpiritDreamer, thank you so much for your post, it means a lot to me that you mentioned composing :D
Well here are other drawings:

Hello Talaria,
thank you for your kind words. Looking at your master studies, I'm nearly starting to blush to read compliments from talented people like you :), because I still have soooo much to learn.
I hope you'll have a great time here... it's one of the greatest places on the web
you're off to a good start getting yourself some fans with such nice drawings that's for sure :wavey:

The second Hermes drawing is more dynamic, I believe, but I personally prefer the first one. I really like that pose. :) The one of Eros is interesting, because it has that element of mystery... Like... Who's he aiming at? ;)

Vilhelmina, heh I also like his pose too bad it doesnt look so good :/. I'm glad you liked my eros :)

Hi...Talaria...
Three more nice drawings...GREAT.....top one is my favorite of the three....like the silver gray
background.....adds beauty, and a sinse of atmosphere to the drawing..:)
I think that you should creat a drawing, like that dragon and ship one posted above....part master copy, and part from your own imagination...a combination of both, morphed into one
really nice drawing. I like the way you explaned the way you got the fierce look in the dragon face, by studying DaVinci faces.
Wouldn't mind seeing you creat a drawing for the OFDW # 19...THE AWAKENING GIANT...THEME,...Using that same method you used with the dragon and ship drawing, of picking elements from an old master that fit, and applying them in your own drawing.
A fine drawing, done in that method, is just as good and sometimes even better, than a finished painting, that doesn't use that method....check out that OFDW #19....i think you
would enjoy it, and learn a great deal, at the same time....it just started, and has a whole month to go...just post your drawing in there, and you will see and learn, how to take it further....I just posted my idea for the giant concept in there myself, and would be more than happy to help you out along the way, if you post your idea in there...so will everyone else I am sure...hope to see you there... :)
Just saw the painting...glad you decided to not use the color picker...just cheat yourself that way...:)

Hi...Talaria.....:applause:
Knew you had a good imagination...:)
I really like the first Titan...The one with his hand coming right out of the bottom of the picture plane...whole figure really poppes out at the viewer....maybe just a little more space on the sides of the picture plane to get his elbow, and other hand...Would be a really strong composition, with very deep forshortening of the figure...NICE..:) ....Mabe have him stareing at a very small city or something in that bottom corner, to give him scale.
This view, would really give you a chance to work on expression and detail in his face, hands,
arms, back, and shoulders....could end up with a very powerful piece, if you use bits and pieces
from the masters. as your references , and means of study, to refine this figure...if you decide to go with this one.. that is ...:)
Also think you are starting to get a really nice sense of form and volume, in that last painting of yours...really starting to shape up nicely...
Can' wait to see your progress...

ohhh i think I'm getting the hang of digital painting TuT I like how it's looking so far
Hey Mariana,
I really like your giant sketches, especially the last one. Not sure what your plan is but maybe making the giant a bit more "massive", showing more power will make it even more dynamic I think. The pose is lovely. It awakes my own imagination...
Looking forward to see an update!
wow, Talaria, the foreshortened hand pose on your giant sketch is wonderful.
Did you ref that? If it is from imagination I will not post in your thread for some time as I will have to recover first...:D

Very nice sketches Talaria. Your Hermes wip is looking great.
I like your giant sketch, waiting to see hoe it turns out.
cheers
I had a similar idea for the OFDW. Some giant getting out of the ground. Only I thought of doing him geting out of the wall and being a bit monsterish :bounce: I like the view you've chosen for him. The tree on his hand gives a great hint of the scale. I know this is just an early sketch, but be sure to make more hints like that. Little people on the ground and so on.
Great start on the Correggio study too.
Looking forward to see this progressing

NR43, you're right I should make my giant more ..meaty
Sir Mu, :D it is from my imagination, but drawing the Hemes of Correggio really helped me with the torso and the legs :)
-voraz-, Thank you!
razz, thank you, I was planning on doing more little trees on top of him, but I don't think I'll draw little people in it :/
---
A little update in the giant I made him more meaty.
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g182/plunder_bunny/undgiant2.png
I haven't done anything else because I have been ...lazy ( D: )
By saying some little people I meant everything that would define the scale better. Trees are good :D Geting nicer. But be careful with those very dark lines, I don't think you want that. it doesn't matter now much, because you're going to paint it (you are going to paint it, right?), but when drawing, if you do a darker line, you will get the viewers attention to that place. So by doing such a dark line you're almost saying "look, I've made a mistake here". I'm not saying that dark lines are evil, it's just a thingie where to put them :)
Good luck with your peace
Talaria
08-31-2006, 02:57 AM
Well you're right on the lines. I wasn't thinking of coloring him :/ since I'm just not good with digital painting...but I could try, In fact I really need to practice...so I guess I'm coloring him now :)
I fixed the lines:

Talaria,
You have some lovely sketches, I was curious to know if you have applied to school yet, or have submitted a portfolio - one thing at least here is that schools tend not to like to see digital work in a Portfolio, only Traditional, so hopefully you have or will inquire about your school's requirements for admission.
Looking forward to seeing more of your work!
Cheers, :)

I haven't applied yet. I'm in the process of moving to another place, so I will apply when I'm moved :) . oh I didn't know about the digital art in the portfolio, well that wouldnt be a problem for me since I don't have many digital art.
Update on my giant for the workshop:

I said i was going to paint him digital but not anymore, I don't think I could finish it in a week :/
Hey Talaria,
I should have listnened to your advise concerning proportions for my OFDW entry... I apologize for that ;)
I'm reworking every character again now.
Your entry is coming along nicely I see. i was wondering what you'll do with it's fingers? Especially the left hand looks a bit awkwardmaybe you could even make them longer so they look like tree roots or something... just a suggestion. This is already a wonderful piece as it is now really
Good luck with moving and all!
Looking really great with the environment added! Good choice to color it. The image will look much more alive with the colors, only choose them carefully. And how are you planning to do it? Paint on top of the drawing or just use it as a guideline?

NR43, O: no need to apologize for that. I didn't understood what you were telling about depths and values so I was looking forward to your next step on your work to see how it will turn out. It's good that you're reworking on them, I saw your last post, the guy looks very good :)
Hmmm about the fingers I was planning on making them on top of rocks, you're right they do look weird.
Razz, hehe you misunderstood, I'm not planning on coloring him, I like it as it is black and white :). I would color it but i don't have time D:
Battle812, no problem :). thanks. thanks for pointing it out, I think its the shading, I'm going to work on that too.

Hi Talaria,
I made this exact same post to the OFDW 019 thread, but hope you don't mind if I post it here as well. :)
Hope this little paintover helps - bear in mind, these are only suggestions. :) The main thing I would recommend is just elongating the legs and also just giving the torso a more overall sense of flow by lengthening the lines of the side that stretches, and contracting / pinching the lines of the side that is being compressed:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/rebeccak5/Anatomy%20Thread%20of%20Talaria/Talaria-01_new.gif
I also really recommend looking at Greek / Roman sculpture, for example the Laocoon Group, for examples of figures that exhibit twisting:
http://www.wga.hu/art/b/bandinel/laocoon.jpg
For everything we do, there is a precedent. :)

Hi...Talaria.....:applause:  :)
You ended up with a REALLY FINE drawing...has that old master look about it ....GREAT..:bounce:
I wouldn't mind seeing the outside curve of his neck...left side of drawing...needs to have a nice rounded outward curve leading into the skull, simalar to the neck line of the sculpture that
Rebecca posted above.
Also, the forarm..right side of drawing, is a little small in diamiter, compared the the one on the left side of drawing...needs the muscle tendon on upper side of forarm,..that conectes and ties the foram into the upper arm...makes a nice kind of curve that connectes the two. Put your palm faceing down, tighten up muscles in your arm, and you will see that tendon muscle in action..:) ...this muscle tendon will give the foram the proper diamiter...also the wrist on that arm...right side of drawing, can stand to be a little thicker..just minor stuff,..but will make a big difference in the look of ... YOUR.... drawing
GREAT JOB on this drawing...was a real pleasure to see it develope...looking forward to seeing your next piece...

I started University this monday so I don't have as much time to draw as I had in vacations, but well I'll find the time :). Also my godfather gave a new monitor (yaay) everything looks more bright, now the hermes copy doesn't look as good as it used to X_X .

This thread is so much fun to look through- like a real sketchbook (by someone with talent ;)). All of your master studies have a very simple feel that still manages to convey a lot of information about form- that's not always easy to accomplish........ well done . I also love the very classical style you used in your underground giant drawing. I will definitely be checking back here to see what's new!

Hi.....Talaria...
Congrats on getting your giant drawing into the best of... section....:applause:
I think that if you are wanting to learn to paint,..you will learn much more, and much better, by starting out without color. Only use shades of gray,..from almost black to almost white
You might try a grayscale painting of a classical figure, using the same brushes that you are experimenting with now.
Search out all of the lights and darks // VALUES // first,..with a broad brush, then go to smaller brushes next, and save the details for last.
Try to stay away from line in your painting process, and filling in between them...Think more in terms of VALUES running into each other,...CREATING EDGES and PLANE'S.
Once you learn to do a great VALUE study in gray scale, developeing your brushwork in that
initial phase of learning,...it is just a matter of replacing the grays with color.
But first you must learn to see VALUES, and it is just a lot easier to observe them in grayscale.
Hope this helps some....think you will do great painting, after seeing how well you are at drawing..:)
Looking forward to seeing your first VALUE STUDY... greyscale painting, of the human figure:thumbsup:

Hi....Talaria... :) ....WOW....nice to see this piece...really glad you are trying your hand at painting in this manner,..it is just one technique among many,...and is my favorite..:)
Hope you don't mind that I did a little paintover of your work.
You have a very nice sense of atmosphere, and are not afraid of the darks.
WHEN YOU GET TO THE STAGE YOU ARE AT IN YOUR PAINTING, IT is time to add the lights,
to bring it to life.....move your values up toward the lighter end of the gray scale, getting as many lighter values as you can, and use them sparingly...a little goes a long ways kind of thing...Put the lights on the highest part of the facial planes...cheeks, brow, lips ect.
This is also the time, when you really punch out the dark areas with a deep dark value,.nostals, dark side of face, upper eyelid, shadow area around eye socket, ect.
You want the puples to be touching the upper eyelids, unless you are going for a crasy kind of stare in most cases..:scream:
The main thing to remember and visualize, is the direction of your light source, and where it falls on the surface planes of the face...:)
GREAT PROGRESS FROM YOU SINCE YOU CAME ON THIS FORUM...REAL PLEASURE SEEING IT:thumbsup:
REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING MORE OF YOUR WORK..:)

Hi....Talaria....:applause:
Nice job,...now you are getting the hang of it...:)
Take a close look at the way the old masters did the high lights in the eyes, lips, nose ect.
Most of the time, the high light that is in the eye that is in shadow, will be a tad darker.
Also the lips have distinct planes, which all capture the light and shadows, the same as the nose planes...the line in the center of the lips, becomes an edge, that varies, and vanishes into the shadow of the shadow planes of the lips, and also emerges into the light. The top lip will appear a little harder,in the way it reacts to the light,.. while the bottom lip will appear soft, in the way it reacts to the light.
I think that as long as you keep in mind while you are painting, that the forms of the face, and body, are made up of many many planes, that are devided up into many even smaller planes, and that each plane is capturing the light, and also creating a shadow at the same time, then you will be on the right path to great painting.
When you use color, the same princaple will apply, except you will be varying the shade of the color from dark to light on each planed surface.
Also study the size and shapes of the high lights of the eyes in the portraits done by the old masters.
In most cases, you want to really snap or pop them in there really quick, with a tiny pointed brush....gives them energy and life....takes a lot of practice, and is an art in itself.
These little subtle things are what counts when doing portraits, and the whole figure for that matter...Each master handled them in there own way, but the princaples remain the same...:)
Hope these words help a little,....think you are doing a fantastic job by the way..really great progress...and a real pleasure seeing it...:)

Anyway my scanners are dead, BOTH! O: it's terrible I can't scan my drawings :/ one won't show up the program and when i use the other it says that I don't have any scanner instaled, I instaled it again and it keeps saying that >_<
Donnow if you did this or not but try it like this:
1.disconnect the scanner from your pc
2.uninstall the scanner software
3.shut down your pc (not restart, shutdown)
4.start pc and (re-)install scanner software.
5.depending on your scanner software (check the manual) you might have to connect the scanner before or during the software installation.
Hope this helps, would love to see your drawings :D
take care,

A greek warrior sketch (Hoplita, mirmidon...?)http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g182/plunder_bunny/greekguy.png
Give him a spear and an aspis and you'll have a hoplite :)
The first that I can crit is the linework. It is awry, I mean, places the one and the same line is drawn repeatedly which gives not a nice effect. Try drawing confident, long lines. I read that it's good to start with only straight lines, even it they will be curved later (or are curved if drawing from reference or from life). It's great to see you working on the linework, that is very important. I was always amazed by the linework of Zhuzhu. I'm sure you've seen his thread and the work posted there. See how little lines he uses.

Hey razz, thank you for the crit I really appreciate it. I'll start working on those clean lines :)
Well here is a simple eye I did in photoshop just to try that coloring the greyscale method of painting

nice coloring
If you paint an eye from a viewpoint this close, you really ought to add more details you know. Make it anatomically correct ;)
