View Full Version : bump maps and noise
JasonA 01-24-2003, 07:14 PM I'm noticing that whenever I add a bump map to a texure, the resulting bump effect is very "noisy" and speckled. Even tho the image itself is very crisp. I've played around with the filtering, but I seem able to blur the image out, and then the bump is not as defined/useful.
I'm probably doing something wrong, but why does the default bump settings look so crappy?

This may be very patronising so I apologise in advance, but you're not using jpeg images are you?

no problem, I'm interested in exploring everything. But no, I'm using GIF's since the bumps are relatively simple and just b/w.
Does Maya not like JPEG files or something?

jpegs are ok if they are good quality.
it could be your geometry...
if NURBS have a big space between the isoparms
it could be stretching the texture ...
it could be a lot of other stuff too
its very hard to tell without seeing some
pics

Gif is only 256 color, so if you have alot of gradients in the b&w, it could be banding and causing the artifacts you are refering to.
