View Full Version : Daknarr's last wish

This started as a simple exercise to test my new tablet, but ended up taking lots of hours to bring it to completion. I'm still not entirely happy with the poses, but I admit I was too lazy to go back to them with hours of painting behind me. I'm looking for all kinds of critique, especially concerning the colours and mood, as I'll be working on similar painting for the next few months.

Here's the latest version with several corrections I made to lighting, anatomy and mood. Thanks to the expertise and talented hand of Mr. Steven Stahlberg and this amazing thread: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=359226

Any critique is very welcome until I move this over to the gallery. =)

i reallyed like the tree, but i love that idea of the paintover, maybe you could do one on my pic, its in the WIP forums ; P
anyways i really like how he changed the lighting to really fit, i just dont know how to describe it, i like it! haha
you had it not too bright , but you were able to see the details in the rocks, fine if the sun was higher but since you had it lower, the 2nd image matches it perfectly, with the shadows on the figures and the roccks. i also love the head in the 2nd one alot more. one suggestion would be to make him clenching his fist, and maybe bend the arm a little more. so it looks like he is preparing for the pain haha.
gl to you bro.

I really enjoy the lighting and the detail in the armor (great design, btw). What bugs me is the strange clipping of the red guy's wings at the top. Could you just add a little more canvas up there?
Also I'm not altogether sure what is going on. It looks like the armored guy is handing the other his sword. I'm not sure what the head in the red guys hand is supposed to signify, I see no body and can only assume he is flitting about in the sky with his favorite stuffed head or something ;)
Last thing I'll pick on are the rocks on which the armored guy's helmet are sitting. That arc coming toward the viewer looks a bit too uniform and unnatural.
Keep it up! :)

Thanks for the comments, Doomchamp. I had actually a clenching fist there, but it just didn't match the flower it's holding.

Thank you for your input, I'll be sure to try and get those rocks corrected, except for the clipping, which would require tons of new things added to the top and wouldn't sit right with the composition. Too much blank space around the edges. I agree it's still a flaw though.
As for what's going on, it's based on a comic book story I've been asked to not comment in public just yet, but I can say the armored man is giving the daemon his enchanted sword (for which he has no use now) and the chopped head (his former nemesis) for safeskeeping on a burial site high atop the mountains. The helmet you see belongs to the poor 'stuffed' head, not the armored character. I hope it clears up the meaning. :]

Hi :)
Thanks for the comment on my sketches! I like the updated version, nice work. As for the painting, I really liked the warrior and his costume design. The wings of the demon (in my humble opinion) could be more transparent and have visible veins like that of a bat. Just a thought though ;) Oh, and the colors look great!
