View Full Version : Gods/Demons - Character - Sphere777
Sphere777 03-15-2002, 08:51 PM Greetings everyone. I'm a late entry and a slow starter but here goes nothing. I'm wanting to do a Manticore as pictured on the cover of a Piers Anthony Novel - "A Spell for Chameleon". I can't find the name of the artist of the image I'm using as a reference so if anyone can point me in the right direction I'd be happy to give credit to him.
In this post I'm working out the proportions of the mainbody. I didn't spend to long on this as I just started.

Ok, here goes the next update. In this edition I roughed out the body, added the base of the scorpion tail, and roughed out the wings. Let me know what you think.

Well here's the latest. I did a lot more with the wings and the tail this time around. Still have stuff to do with the tail in adding some details here and there. Next onto the paws and the head. Let me know what you think..

Ok, so here goes after much reluctance to post my progress on the head. A friend of mine in the CG world badgered me to post so here goes, please send tips, and comments/suggestions, I'm open to them all so let the flood gates open. I feel that there's still a lot of work to be done on the mouth/chin area, work on the brow and eye area. I feel that once the fur is in on the cheek area and around the head that it'll look more proportionate and fit with what's going on in the reference image. Please, give feedback. Thanks.

It's looking great, I can't see any big mistake compared to the concept...maybe the eyebrows may need a bit more work. But overall it looks great!
...get the fur on!

Thanks for the reply, I've been thirsty for outside critiques. I'm very anxious to move to the fur, I'm not sure if I should finish the last few tweaks to the face to make it more like the reference or if I should move to the fur and then finish the tweaks. Decisions... decisions... Thanks for the reply.

I like this a lot...
I can't wait to see the model with hair.

Ok so I know that I haven't posted in a while. I live in Florida but at this moment am posting this from Iowa while I'm waiting for my son to be born. (long story as to the Iowa part). Anyways. Due to the fact that I'm running around like a chicken with my head cut off getting things ready I finally found some time to work on my challenge to take a load off.
In this update I made a lot of revisions to the face and added some hair around the cheek area to give an idea as to how I was planning on doing the hair for the rest of the head. Please let me know what you think.
Thanks

The face is great and the wings too, I see alot of potential in your model, when you detail the face he will really stand out. I was sure worth the time looking at all these new posts.

Now thats what I am talking about! Good work! It is going to look very nice when the fur is complete. Really like the way the face is turning out, looking very nice! Keep up the good work!

Yes his name is Thomas Gabriel.
In regards to the detailing of the face, are you referring to maybe the finer details of like wrinkles and defining the lips or eyelids?

Yeah some eye area and lip definition, not so much minor wrinkling but major ones like furrows on the brow, "crows feet" near the eyes, and the groove some people (mostly older men) have along the cheeks. One thing I find really improves the appearance of a face is the bone definition around the eyes.:)

ok Thanks for the tip. I'll work on that.

Ok this isn't a major update but I did do a lot of modifications to the face taking into account the tips given. Added som crows feet which I did think added a lot and defined and fixed the nose, cheeks, mouth, and eyes. Modified the ears a little. And finally added some more hair.
-Doctor appointment after doctor appointment. She was due yesterday and is still cooking away. Hopefully my son will come soon.
Does the hair look ok?

Here's a wireframe for you all. The hair is dense as expected. I'm still "In progress with it".

The upper lip below the nose looks real flat. Perhaps you should bring the midlle of the lips forward and create a nice rounded upper lip area.
nice work.... but i do agree with Verminator that ur character is a little flat on the feature.
need more details to the face itself.
anyway, great work!
seems like u are really ambitious on doing hair. did u modeled it strand by strand?
Sphere777
03-29-2002, 09:06 PM
Well the hair is actually just a Poly Edge Extrude from the base shape and then sliced into wedges. I guess I am in essence modeling each strand. It's been a long time since I've really modeled so there may be a better way to do it that I haven't stumbled upon yet.

Looking good! As for modeling the hair, it seems to be a good approach (since no transparency maps are allowed). Maybe you will want to cut down on the amount of extrusions from each "hair clump" since you will prolly be layering hundreds of these guys to make the fur. Keep up the great work! Hope to see more soon!

Well on Monday my boy (Thomas Gabriel) was born at 10:41 AM and I was in the hpspital with my wife until Wednesday. So needless to say I haven't had much time to put much more into my character so I'm posting what I have.
In this revision I made a lot more modifications to the face to make it look more like the reference. Roughed out the mane. Added eyelashes (refrained from the eyebrows, wasn't sure about whether this kind of creature would have had them or not.)
After this challenge I plan to finish him up in case the next challenge pertains to this challenge with our characters. Not much to wow over but I'd appreciate all of your final thoughts as to how I could progress and improve. Thanks.

Looking great Chuck! Definately going to have to finish this one up and use it for the shading and lighting challenge. Only thing I would do on this model now is really define the muscles and start replacing the extruded fur geometry with similar geometry as the mane.
