Here's my attempt. I just wanted to do a temple in the jungle, and thought of this lighting scenario. Not too much time for finessing on this one, but I think I got most of the bare essentials in there in case I wanted to take it further. This took about 40 minutes in Photoshop. I look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with!

NathanialWest - Nice take on the subject. There really is a nice feeling of light on the building.

Here's mine. Wow 2 days in a row now. I'm on a roll.:)

Hopefully this works! My first entry in the daily sketch. 45 minutes including a phone call. This is a bit foreign to me because I'm so anal and detail oriented that quick loose stuff (yes, 45 minutes is quick for me!) is difficult for me to get my head around (but good for me!) The caterpillar of course "hides" the hidden beauty of the butterfly - not that he isn't beautiful in his own way too. Photoshop.

Cupid and Psyche is my favorite tale in mythology. The Hidden Beauty has multiple meanings: Cupid hides his beauty from Psyche (only visiting her at night); Cupid also must hide Psyche's beauty from his jealous mother; and Psyche, herself, as a personification of the human soul, undergoes transformation into something eternally beautiful - this represented by the butterfly.

I really wanted to spend more time on this... but I stopped myself as not to go too far over the time-limit.

Hello all - really great sketches so far - excellent all round

I really ran out of time on something that i'd imagined only spending around 30 minutes on. I took too long making the wall which stil look too clean and straight, so i ended up having to slap on a brush for leaves and flowers rather than painting them - so jsut squeezed it in for 45-50 minutes.

Hint: Examine the signpost ;)
"H" is not for "hidden" but for the (german) Haltestelle (=bus stop).

The entries are quite different, I like them very much. Sometimes I wonder, if someone, who doesn't know the topic, can find it out by viewing the sketches. This time it would be quite hard...

I'm soo slow, it took me 2 hours to complete the picture:

I'm sure there's a story here but truth be told, I just wanted to draw a monster. Play off the whole theme. I really do need to learn how to use this whole Wacom thing I have on my desk though.

Final Inks (I got obsessed) - a little under 100 minutes.

EhsanD. I've added a Direct Link (http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/4001/hiddenbeauty50minmb4.jpg) to the picture in my post for this thread. If you can see it, let me know. (If you can't see it, you're not missing much- I'm a terrible artist!)

I enjoy your work, BTW.

EhsanD, I think your government blocks certain internet services for 'some obscure reason'. I noticed a lot of iranese having the problem, from what I've heard it's probable. Tough luck. :(

I wondered if anyone would beat me to the waterfall idea. :D I did a five-minute thumbnail sketch with my trusty Pentalic woodless 6B, but I never got around to doing a full painted sketch.

Nah, nothing to apologize about. In fact, I'm surprised there weren't more people with the waterfall idea. Something about "hidden beauty" just makes me think of little-known waterfalls hidden away somewhere in the deepest jungles of Hawaii. Not to worry about the whole "Herbal Essences slant," though...my idea didn't involve anyone bathing in the waterfall. :)

A bit of story behind this pic:
Today I read an article about children in Phillippins. Some of them leave in the street, or even in a nearby graveyard, and their whole life is about finding "treasures" in the heaps of rubbish in one of the biggest waste in the world. "Treasures" can mean cans or tins, but usually all that is useable has already been taken out. So these kids' life is a complete misery, and they die very young. Then spend the rest of their time sniffing glue with the little money they manage to earn. My pic is supposed to represent one of these kids... They could have had a future with better luck, and there are beauty and innocence hidden behind their misery.
