hi,
started modelling today because i think i need some 3d-stuff in my portfolio in future.

i think i hate it ;)

im using maya

made the body of the pencil with an extruded poly cone.
the tip of the pencil is a poly cone too, but with more subdivisions.

now i want to merge these two and then to get rid of the overlapping surfaces. but i cant find a way. or am i totally wrong?

please help,

hi

you can create the whole pencil with the poly cone.

you only have to do:

-create the poly cone with 18 sections http://aycu20.webshots.com/image/3059/2002170166752325477_rs.jpg (http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/v/2002170166752325477)
-select the upper egdes and extrude them a little bit.

-give the extruded part the right form : http://aycu23.webshots.com/image/2262/2002176887073149269_rs.jpg (http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/v/2002176887073149269)

- extrude again and your pencil will be a pencil http://aycu01.webshots.com/image/2760/2002163522357990631_rs.jpg (http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/v/2002163522357990631)

in the end some fine work to smooth the shape and it will looks fine ;)

If you are aiming at having one complete piece of geometry its going to be tough to merge it the way it is just now.

I would replace the cone with one that has the saem number sides as the pencil

Delete the bottom faces of the cone

Hold down the V key and use the move tool (W) to snap the verts together at the joining points

Merge the verts that have been snapped together

Select the faces of the cone and smooth them

That way you have one piece of geometry and you dont have to worry about all the extra verts in the cone

Another way, with polys and booleans: Do a six-sided prism for the pencil shaft and a 12 sided cone for the tip. Duplicate the shaft, move it so it completely encompasses the cone length(height)wise.
Do a boolean intersection with the cone and prism, you should get a nice, clean tip (I did). now move the tip, so that the base of it is as close to the top of the original shaft prism. Delete the connecting base and top.
Combine the two polygons, select the vertices you want to merge (they should be pretty close together), adjust the merge distance if it's too small... There! a nice, clean, low-poly pencil!
