View Full Version : Little boy and the Distance WIP
michelln 08-16-2006, 08:51 PM This is still in the very early stages, but I would like to know what you think of it. I'm trying to create a feeling of distance(if that makes sense) so I'd really like to know if that's working!

It's working for me. I wouldn't go any darker with the building, though.
My only real crit is that the kid looks like he's being pushed over by wind.

I see what you mean. I think it might be because the boy's neck looks a bit crooked. I'll fix that! Thanks for the crit!:)

I think that you can improve this pic placing the little boy more on left and then adding some of perspective on clouds, scaling on about 70% the castle and adding light to it.
waiting for news,
Serena.

If you want the feeling wishes to get to the castel but can't or it won't be easy you might add a bird effortlessly flying through the air to add to the irony.
Please comment on my piece.

The other thing to keep in mind as you work on this is to mimize detail as you get further away. Keep the details on your boy and the precipice upon which he stands. Keep the palette and details simple on the things in the distance.
I look forward to seeing you develop this.

I agree with what has been posted above: Moving him (and the rock) more to the left would improve the composition. Plus I think it would the feeling of distance you want to create. =)

Thank you very much for all the helpfull comments. Keep 'em coming!
Here's some progress:

And a close up of the boy:

I moved the cliff and the boy a little bit to the left as was suggested  also made the buildings a little smaller.
Added more colour to the clouds because I felt that all the blues was getting a bit to monotone.

Better!
Now I only suggest you to add some clouds/sun colors to the castle too and make it less defined.
Do you know what air perspective is?
In few words air is not only composed by gas but also by some 'invisible dust' that -in long distance- causes something that a 'blured effect' of object plus a diffusion of light's color.
See this pic as reference :

Try to use this trick ;)

Thanks for the suggestion and the reference Serena! I added an extra layer of cloud to the castle to get that blurred effect. Also added more detail to the clouds.

Very beautiful Michel! Everything looks in harmony there, I don't know how else you can improve it. =)

This is gorgeous! Is this your first digital piece? I looked at your DeviantArt page and everything looks traditional (and very good). I really really like this, the sense of distance that you wanted is really tangible, and with it being a young boy, the way he's holding his goggles... you wonder what he's thinking, and you can't help but imagine being there and looking onto that vast sky.
Lovely!

Ralph, thanks! I think the composition is pretty much set now, i'll just be adding more detail!
Runecaster, I'm glad you like it! It's not my first digital piece, but most digital paintings I've done are portraits (there are some in my CG portfolio). Thanks for having a look at my DeviantArt page too:)

I think it's about finished now, unless you see some things that are still wrong or you have any more sugestions to make it better!
