Alrighty...Now I feel I'm comfortable enough with splines now, that I am going to be modeling my first 3D car..(Yippee!) I started this yesterday morning and here's my work up until last night.

Thanks for any comments or critiques.

Thanks, Verti. I watched SplineGods tut a couple hundred times then just started goofing around with the splines making absolutely nothing but odd shappes trying to fit the peices together. So now I take the plunge.

(note: the last image is just to see the car shape. I will only patch one half then mirror.)

that's nice starting & i'm waiting to see other reply...

Well, I've started patching. I will probably end up repatching a couple times, as this is a learning experiance for myself.

I'm seeing now that LW will only allow up to 4 splines to be patched, and I have some intersections where there are five splines. Is there away to convert 2 splines to 1 spline? I know how to split them.

Thanks for the nice comments.

Where did you get the images?
and is there anyway to use that technique, or one like that in Maya?

I got the images from http://www.suurland.com/ ,one of the best blueprint sites imho.

I also downloaded product pdf's from www.ford.com on the Focus to get dimensions an more info on the car.

As far as Maya, I do not know, I'm sure there is, you should head over to the Maya forum and ask there. I've never used it.

Alright last update for the night. There are some area's I may go back and redo, but who knows. I got some of the splines in the back fixed, and need to work on the front to get rid of some 5 spline junctions. The hard part about patching is getting the poly's per section with the same horizontal and vertical poly count as the surrounding sections. They have to be somewhat close to make welding easier.

here's my update for tonight:

Here's a tutorial for modeling a Subaru in Maya in a similar technique.

Excellent tutorial, very detailed.

Thanks guys, and thanks for the link. I generally try not to follow along with tut's but just look through them. I like to try and find my own methods, that way I learn more from my mistakes. I've actually reworked the splines over the last day and have started repatching, because of some mistakes I found later on while patching. Every time I restart it though, it looks better and better.

Alright, I got a little more time this morning, and since I re-worked the splines yesterday, I spent only about an hour patching everything.

I have not welded all the vertices of the patches yet, but will soon. I need to bandsaw some new poly's to line up the vertices. soooooo.... Here's a nice update for you!

Thats a good attitude to have but I think its also really good to keep an open mind and learn from the people around you. They might be using real time saving methods that you might not stumble upon right away. If your overall goal is to improve as a 3d artist, there is really no shame in doing so. :)

Opps, I had a broken link, fixed it.

Anyways, Yes, Akira, I do use parts of tuts that I find useful. I just try not to follow them step by step, otherwise, I feel like I'm just doing someone elses work, and not trying on my own.

I understand. But if you are simply applying the concept you learned from the tutorial, its hardly doing someone elses work. :)
btw did you find an easy way to merge wires in lightwave yet?

Oh, yes. Merge Poly's

If anyone else is interested, here's my complete tool set I'm using to build this.

I used "Add Points(SHIFT+ +)" and "Make Open Curve(CTRL+P)" to build the splines.

That's it.

Another update. I 've gotten the base mesh done, so now I'm Splitting it into peices and starting to add the details.

I haven't had much time to work. I've sliced up some of the parts and have started on the bumper kit. I've decided to make a personal stylized Focus, versus the rally car.

Please let me know what you think of the bumper.

It looks top notch soo far, only thing I can crit is that it looks too thin, even the front and back shots of the blueprint look to be squished a little. No big deal, you can scale it if it is a little off. Some great cars being produced with the method you are using!

I got the width and length dimensions straight from fords product info sheet, so I made the templates to size.

But hey..thanks man. I'm trying really hard.

haven't had much time to work on it, I haven't given up. Here's my latest.

sweet job fourd, maybe lower the airintak on the hood.. I kinda like the one of the Cougar Xr7... kinda wedge like.. anyhoo keep at it.

I like the current edits on the bumper area.

yeah, i agree with eighth decay. the bumper is kewl, but the air intake is a little too high

very nice ongoing model here

Well, got a tad bit more done. I wanted to throw some paint on this ond render the shell. I think by doing that you are btter able to see what needs smoothing.

Here it is:

Got another update. I finished my presentation for work, so I'm able to get back to the focus. After 2 days of trying to model a tire in different various ways, I finally got it. The rim is a little incomplete, but I was so excited at getting the tire modeled finally, I had to show it off.

Nice work on the body...IMO the wheels don't fit the car....unless it's going to be more of a drag car instead of a rally car...just my $.02.....keep it up:thumbsup:

Thanks Remi.. I'm using the WRC Rally image as I don't have a template of a regular focus. But I am doing my own thing with it. In the end i will be a tricked out focus complete with DVD monitors in the head rests :p
