View Full Version : Gods/Demons - character/environment - mindmatter
Mindmatter 03-15-2002, 07:18 PM I just can't stay out of this one. Missed the last challenge due to lack of time. But for this one I have plenty.
My entry will be the ghost of a fallen samurai.
This samurai lived in a time when war raged throughout the entire Japan. He finally met his doom while defending his Daimyo against a horde of enemies. Because of the cruel nature of his demise he came back from the dead in the form of a demonic ghost warrior. Watching over the place where he died, he await an opportunity to avenge the death of him and his Daimyo.
So far I've only modelled part of the body and since most of him is going to be covered with armor I havn't worried too much about details (muscles and so on).
If I got enough time left I will try to modell the battlefield where he died.

Looking good so far, Mindmatter! I like your concept - it would be awesome if you also model the battlefield, time allowing.
Looking forward to seeing more :)

Very nice modeling, and proportions.
Although the kneecap/thigh area seems a bit strange to me.
It would be really cool to se a concept scetch.
Looking forward to next update.
Keep up the good work mindmatter!!

Thx for the comments ppl!
Leigh: I'm starting to think I won't have time to modell the battlefield. I picture it with several dead bodies in full armor stacked all over the field but since even one character in armor is taking a lot of time and I don't want them to look like clones I might have to abandon that idea. But I'll give it a try anyway. Maybe I should be modelling instead of writing an update :D
Nicgo: Hey you old bastard :scream:
Yeah I know the legs look odd but I won't bother with'em since they will be fully covered with pants and armor :)
The concept is just in my head and it's hard to put an imaginary image on paper (screen) but I'll try to modell faster instead so you won't have to wait too long for the final model.
And now for something completely different: A naked man with no head.

For whatever odd reason there is I havn't been able to open cgtalk.com from home for a few weeks now. But here is an update with more armor parts.
The kabuto (helmet) is not final but will be shortly. Then it's time for legs and arms.

Hmmm looking good!
I think that this one will be smashing, I like the idea of a demon/ghost samurai. You want to be sure he has a head *lol*;) and are you using Brazil r/s?
Keep it coming!

Very solid work.
Are you going to make a head or are you going to leave him headless? I kind of think it is neat with out it. The honorable thing to do after the a samurai is defeated is to cut of his head and carfully wrap it up in a beautiful box and send it home to his family. That could be a neat twist for your demon/god's story, he could be searching for his head.
For crit the upper part of the arm looks to long and the forarm looks to short. The armor that is over his legs looks good but needs some sort of connections to hold it up looks like it is just floating.
Very nice and minimal. http://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon10.gifhttp://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon14.gif
Good modeling to you.

Thx for the feedback ppl :)
sangotten: You're right. I'm using Brazil at the moment. Not sure if I will use it for the final rendering. I was planning to use VRay but since the trial period is over I have to come up with something else. Might go for a normal scanline render and a few lights. But I might just as well stick with Brazil. Depending on how much time I've got left after the modeling part is done.
so_hi: Yeah, I've been thinking about keeping him headless.
Just as you're saying, a fallen samurai would most likely get his head choped of.
I have read that samurai's used to burn incense in their helmets before they went into battle or to a duel. Thats because they didn't want it to smell bad when their heads got separated from their bodies :)
How very thoughtfull of them. :D
The arms might look strange because of the pose he's in. But I'll look into it just in case
The legarmor have been tweaked a bit but as you're saying, they need something to hold 'em up, and it's on its way.
Right now I'm working on his legs (and most likely his McHammer pants)
Well, back to the ol' 3DS. :buttrock:
