View Full Version : ATI Opengl issue on Macbook Pro

I'm running windows XP on My Macbook Pro 17" and having a small but annoying problem with OpenGl performance. I updated the ATI video drivers from the original Boot camp installation to the more recent Catalyst driver for notebooks. Now when i'm in a c4d opengl viewport and trying to edit a model, the whole viewport temporarily blanks out while I'm performing an operation and refreshes later. so if i'm selecting polygons with the live selection tool, as soon as I click to start dragging my mouse, the viewport goes blank except for the exact polygon below my cursor (highlights in red). then it refreshes once I let go of the mouse button. hard to work with and I'm wondering if anyone has an idea of what settings in the catalyst drivers might help this issue. Or perhaps I'll have to go back to the original drivers and compare...but that means sporadic blue screen crashes for me.

any tips appreciated.

I had that exact same problem running the PowerPC version of Cinema on Mac OS X, and then it disappeared when I started using the Universal Binary with 9.6. Not a clue though as to what it is here, sorry.

I had the same on my laptop (acer, pure win, ati)? going back to software shaing helped. OGL with all features off caused it to happen again. 9.512.

Hi Rodney71

I'm also having some small irritating OpenGL issues with Rhino on my MB-pro so you're not alone.

Generally speaking, the ATI cards don't perform brilliantly when it comes to OpenGL. Basically, they have issues that the NVIDIA solutions don't in this area. Unfortunately we don't have a choice when it comes to notebooks but in general go for the NVIDIA solutions in future when it comes to OpenGL & 3D. This is especially important to keep in mind for those who're thinking about which card to put into their new Mac Pro's.
If you doing 3D work and want flawless OpenGL performance, avoid ATI like the plague!

I tend to agree. I also have OGL issues with Rhino and my x1900 card. Generally speaking I've used both nVidia and ATI cards and OGL has been less problematic with nVidia.

thanks for all the replies. I guess it won't be a setting adjustment in this case. I appreciate the recommendations of what card to get and will tuck that away for the future...too bad I didn't really have a choice with the MB Pro. Still, Ati releases regular driver updates and I can hope that they will correct the issues in the future.

Interesting that the original drivers (if memory serves correctly) supplied by Apple with bootcamp didn't seem to have this problem. Perhaps someone else with a macbook Pro can confirm this?

BTW, There's a new Bootcamp 1,1
I installed it today and it updates all drivers (even the ATI ones) It replaces the old bootcamp and allows you to create a new Drivers CD which you then launch in XP to update all existing drivers. It also fixes a number of issues, Isight camera works now in XP and more...

Check it out, it may fix some things on your end...

Thanks for the tip. I installed the new bootcamp 1.1 drivers and after a bunch of problems it now appears the openGL issue is resolved. At first i got a bluescreen everytime windows loaded. had to go into safe mode, restore to previous point, then remove all ati drivers and start over. Bluetooth stopped working but someone in a forum had a solution that worked for me. Isight still doesn't work. it really is Beta software. But my C4D works better so thanks for that.
