If you have multiple copies of Maya running at the same time, then Maya can't open a temp file MayaTemp.avi that is created to set the compression options.

Close multiple Maya's or check to see if this temp file can't be over written

The only other reason I've seen is that you don't have an audio device/drivers installed.
Does the MayaTemp.avi file exist in your temp directory ? if so can you delete it

The error you're getting makes it sound as though there's a dodgy video codec on your PC that's causing problems, try going into the Playblast properties, hitting the Compression button and choosing a different Compressor.

In case that's not it - Maya is renowned for its unstable playblasts - usually right-clicking on the Maya shortcut that you run Maya from, hitting properties and changing to running in Windows 2000 Compatibility mode sorts these issues out.

Good luck.

if i hit the Compression button nothing happens its like there arent any compressors at all on my machine. But there is cause After effects finds them. No problem there.

I cant make it run windows 2000 mode, i run Windows XP64 bit an it is not an option here as it is in windows XP32.

Im wondereing if it is fixable at all

Even if there were none, I'm sure you'd still at least get the dialog box. Sounds like somethings gone funny with your Maya configuration. Tried the 'if all else fails' option of removing the Maya configuration file, and restarting?

Is this Maya 8 you're using under 64-bit, or are you running version 7 but on the XP 64-bit version?

There is no dialog box. It just gives me this message in the command line:
Error: could not link to movie library

im running both versions on my 64 bit system.
Were are the config files?
And how do i delete them.

Thanks again

If you look in 'C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\maya\7.0\prefs\' that's where all of Maya's individual settings for you are kept. There will also be an 8.0\prefs\ folder as well.

If you rename the prefs directory in both the 7.0 and 8.0 folders to oldprefs, when you open Maya they will be recreated with the default Maya settings.

Maya 8 will look at the 7.0 prefs (or older if you have one installed) when you start it unless you rename both that one time.

Worth a go, and you'll still have your old preferences if you need to go back to them.

Hmm, I think you're out of potential reasons for Maya being the culprit here. I guess you could try reverting to Windows classic theme if you're not already, going to single screen mode if you have two screens, making sure your graphics card is definitely set to 32-bit colour - all the things that cause Maya to act quirky at times.

I don't think these will sort the problem though, it sounds as though its something wrong with your Windows install. Maya 7 isn't supported under XP 64-bit, but Maya 8 64-bit is - so that at least should be working. It's possibly not managing to spot your video codecs for some unknown OS-related reason - don't know.

Now if Autodesk would resolve the problem of USB dongles not working under XP 64-bit yet for Maya licensing, I'd be able to see if I have the same issues...
