View Full Version : Compositing: lightsaber test
juanmiguel 01-24-2003, 07:15 AM hi, this is not 3d but it's CG.
I made a quick test for simulating a lightsaber effect, i didn't put much detail or atention to the lighting or shadows since it was just aquick test, i didn't want to expend to much time on it, it took 3 hrs from shooting the video to this stage.
all comments welcome guys, tks

Would you mind to post some screenshots or at least a smaller version of the video (smaller in file size).
Thanks! :wavey:

AWESOME!! The shadows, the glow.... Why don't you make a better coreography - maybe you and you with a camenra in movement...
(Hope you understand my bad English)

tks for the input guys.
now that you mention the shadows, well i'm not really sure if the lightsabers produce shadows or not. well.
A tutorial? , well if there is enough people interested on it i would write one. I would enjoy to share it with you guys.
A better coreography? yeah my idea was to make a fighting scene but unfortunally i don't know people that like CG like me, so i couldn't find some one to help me :( .
An screeshoot. of course, here it is.

I don't see why it wouldn't cast a shadow. Fire casts a shadow. Cool effect by the way.

why would they cast a shadow, they emit more light then the surrounding, frig the glow! they did for sure cast a glare and a light glow, so perhaps the wall behind you should be getting lit up by it ... but otherwise that is amazing :D
Nice lightsaber. Couple of suggestions, though:
Maybe the blade should be a little thicker and longer. Also, the central thingy might need to be a bit blurred. And in some shots in the movie the base is wide -- especially while putting the thing on or off.

pretty cool. very realistic, slightly slow guessing to avoid choppy effect

gentle fury: tks man very nice of you.
nath:i made a thicker version but i liked more the thinner one, may be it's just me , and i don't know what do you mean with the central thingy, you mean the handle of the saber? tks for the input man.
piajarist: tks for the comments man, it's slow coze i'm not like an actor or anything, so i was unsure of what moves i should go for, so i just did some slow swings lol , my original idea was to make a fighting scene with a blade going thru one of the guys and killing him, but i couldn't find actors that could help me out, that's way the coreography and the video itself sucks :( .
pauler ,optix : i'll try to wite a small tutorial on this, and i'll post the link in this thread.
tks for all the input guys.
i don't know what do you mean with the central thingyI mean the blade of the lightsaber.
I found a couple of tutorials:
Premiere and Photoshop (http://www.theforce.net/theater/software/premiere/rotoscoping/rotoscoping_finley.shtml)
After Effects (http://www.theforce.net/theater/postproduction/sabres/sabertutorials.html)

if you want some hard core crits on that I suggest you go to www.theforce.net/theater/ and go into the forums. People have been doing ILM quality sabers for a while there now (notes not necisarily EP2 since some people have issues with the sabers in that film). But a chap by the name of Ryan Wieber has a VERY good tutorial on lightsabers in After effects, linked above I beleive. As well as photoshop. I suggest you follow them and you will achieve superior results.

The rotoscoping is nice and tight. Nice job!
If anyone's interested in another tutorial, here's one I wrote for making sabers in particleIllusion after people kept asking if it was possible. The effect is a little rougher looking than the Premiere or AE methods (the saber breaks apart on really fast swings), but it's alot faster to do

Looks good man, the light saber glow looks nice. My only problem is that it looks like there is some lag and this causes the light/laser to look a bit bent from the handle, but it looks pretty real. Good work so far.

excellent work, 3d or not...compositting is what they stress at my school as well as 3d and lighting...i'm very interested in seeing a tutorial, or at least a brief description as to what you did...(targa sequence or what not)
only 2 things i'd comment on have been said, that being the scale of the lightblade, and perhaps to add a motion blur of sorts to the center...
excellent work
