Here's my version. The reference photos were so nice that I was inspired to incorporate them as textures in the piece. I kept this to an hour in Photoshop.

Those pictures just bring over a wash of nostalgia for me. I miss China. Shang Hai (and actually everywhere else) has become more and more beautiful after I left. Bei Jing is going to be spectacular in preparation for the Olympics. Gorgeous work Nathaniel.

Created in Photoshop, using Wacom tablet. About 50 min.
Cheers!
I spend loads of time in China, and lived there for a few years as well; so I decided to use a pic of my own for reference. This is my wife in Wenhua Guangchang (Culture Square) doing her famous "fish face." I noticed that I had run over the time limit, so I just quit where I was. (I've got to get faster at this !)
PS, about 1hr 20min:

BTW, Nathaniel, great one, man. Yours is what China really looks like- makes me miss it a little.....
EDIT: Btw, isn't 'Wakarimasen' Japanese?
Yeah. I believe it means "I don't understand."

Thanks to all :)
Yeah, "wakarimasen" is japanese. The first pictures of the blog are in japan, one year ago... but then I travelled to Egypt, Italy, Cuba and China and decided to use the same webpage to post my travel pictures.

I tried already yesterday to post my sketches, but after pressing the submit something went wrong. Here's my second try.
Fantastic blog! I like, what all the people here made of it.
I wasn't able to stop working on it after 60 mins. Pencil, Gimp, still no tablet...

58 min / GIMP / Tablet
http://www.surrealix.com/sketch/china.small.jpg
I did this at a way higher res than usual (2k x 4k) to practice working on a larger canvas. Made me realize I need better brushes, most of them don't work well at this size. Does anyone know of a good source for GIMP brushes? I've been making my own, but it's quite an effort...
