View Full Version : Cartoon Rig Demonstration Video - Pencil
theazz 08-15-2006, 01:40 AM Hey all, thought to myself a few week ago i should learn rigging, so after much blood sweat and tears lol, here is a video of the rig, just thought I'd show you guys. I wish i had of included FK options now that i look back but next time I'll know, learnt a lot from this.

looks pretty cool, my only suggestion would be more top level visibility controls... you've got a lot of controllers, especially for the eyebrows and hands, and chances are they won't be needed all the time. i don't know what your animation style is, but generally you'll want to animate poses and movement first, then go through and fine tune... do eyebrows and subtle hand movements and stuff. i would put an attribute on the top level controllers that controls visibility of the fine tune controllers, just to make it look less busy and easier to use.
then again the thing about rigging is that it's all about catering to the animators style, so if this isn't how you roll then you shouldn't do it this way.

i put that in, i thought the video showed that, oh well, the image represents the rig with all controls visiable, turn them off and it boils down to basic IK and pole vectors, just a few controlers. thanks for yoru reply.

Very good job, puts my first rig to shame quite badly... you are one quick learner. Just a question, how did you do the spline ik stretch for the backbone? Ive run into some problems with using arclen and wasnt sure if you used some other method(either way, very well done!).
the elbow that you translated around, how do you make sure that when the animator moves the hand the elbow doesnt bend weirdly because it doesnt match the ik elbow?

One thing that I noticed immediately in the first few seconds of the video is when the character is rotated around to a certain degree, you can see in its right arm, some of the joints near the elbow flip and cause the geometry to become pinched. Perhaps something with orient constraints must be a little funky, that's all.

To help with joint fliping in splineIK check out the mothod using two locators as start ad end up objects, then parenting them to the start and end controls... usually works like a charm.
