uncon 08-14-2006, 07:06 PM This is my first short, re-mastered in HD as a test of how to handle HD footage and rendering. It's short and small, let me know what you think.

you can find the movie, some history, and convenient links to the movie in several flavors HERE (http://www.moltenpictures.com/blinky/BLINKY.html)
or you can download the medium (2MB) half HD (640x360) (http://www.moltenpictures.com/blinky/blinky-small-qt7.mov) version
or the large (4.5MB) full HD (1280x720) (http://www.moltenpictures.com/blinky/blinky-large-qt7.mov) version
on the site there is a WMV 9 version as well
Coments and crits are welcome, let me know what you think of the animation and concept.
That's it for now.
Thanks in advance

so the combo would be waterlemon... get it? cause you said 'kinda like water and lemon', and there's a fruit called watermelon but i used waterlemon instead... so it's funny... no? ahh... boredom strikes us all...
as for the clip, the bnw cell shaded style was nice... i liked it when he spun his scythe like a fan... maybe that's why it felt refreshing? lolness

Yea, special thanks to all the Seans in the world. All the ones I have met are pretty cool.
I am glad it was refreshing, I am going to put that up in the comments on the site.

Nice! I love the style. I watched it 3 or 4 times in a row!
Have you studied any martial arts? The motion on the reaper is pretty smooth.
My cc is that their jumps feel a little floaty. Maybe that's part of of being a character that looks like it's made out of marshmellow?!
And I fully endorse any animation made with the aid of vodka, tequila, or any other spirits. God knows I turn to the bottle frequently when I'm working!

Random Sime, I like the marshmellow bit, I might put it up on the site. The jumps are floaty because I am not a great animator, wait... The jumps are floaty because it underscores the alternate reality these characters inhabit. I haven't studied martial arts, outside of watching kung-fu movies.
I've been doing a lot of experiments with simplified animation styles and characters. I think it's a fun challenge to see what kind of things you can do when your characters have no mouth or even eyebrows. You really have to challenge yourself to comunicate an emotion.

Big thumbs up for getting those mouthless, eyebrowless characters to emote. I saw 'evil' and 'freaked out' and 'confused'... :) I'm doing my animation reel now so I'm deep in thought about these things!
Maybe more blur is needed on the reaper so it doesn't look so choppy? Unless that's another element of the alternate reality these characters inhabit. :P:D

Blur is weird with cel-shading. I got the exact effect I wanted on the spinning, but then everything got a little blurry when they walked and moved and I son't really like it that much. So it goes I guess, if I wanted to do it right I would have rendered it out in passes and comped the motion blured blade onto a non-motion blurred plate. That would have ment a little more time than I wanted to spend on this little project though. The walks are very goofy because that was the first animation pass and I thought it looked funny, so I minorly tweaked it to finish it off.

If you have any animation with characters missing facial features I would like to see them. It's always cool to see how people deal with those issues.
