the background beyond the water is a photo.
i know ill get comments on the light so ill explain it now.
this is kind of a style from photography (a great hobby to extend your 3d). if you look at the sand to the left of the whale you see it fades to darker.. this together with the sharp shadow gives the hint that there is something else than the sun that lights the whale. what it is is up to you though. a truck? greenpeace?

The whale must have had a supersonic speed to get so far up the beach...
U must do an animation! It would be funny as hell.
Nice whale model.

The lighting does have sort of a cool pick up truck feel to it. I would think that the sand around/behind the whale you be a bit smoother from the tide going out though....(if he's dead), if he is still alive some more thrash marks around the fins like you have. Great work.:)

Very nice whale there, specially with those gooey white molethingies. Might be right though, perhaps add some more marks in the sand near his fins. the sand looks great besides that.

I think the most pressing question is: why would you WANT to model a beached whale!?

I really like the sand on the beach and the ocean. Nice rendering by the way...
Here are some critics...
1) Maybe you want to soften the shadow a bit. Since sharper shadows implies that the whale is very small and very close to ground.
2) Change the camera angle to a low angle to emphasis its sheer scale.
These are just some suggestions... hope this helps.
